hi, me and some friends are hosting a dedi server on project zomboid v42.13.1, some of us keep losing characters after logging out, or a server restart, etc. weve done alot of digging and have found nothing to fix it. Anyone had this problem before and fixed it? here's a reddit thread with plenty of other people experiencing the same thing https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/1ptfmnk/b42131_mp_server_keeps_resetting_my_character

we checked the player.db file, and steamid's are not being saved, we checked in terminal if the game perhaps doesnt recognize it, but it does, it does link the steamuser to the correct (and sometimes not correct) characterId. but still proceeds to make a new character anyways

this problem seems to be a persisstent on vanilla servers as well. so mods are not a problem, to replicate this problem. You can host a new game using the terminal dedicated server method, join with a diffrent steam account. Sometimes you log back into your previous character. Sometimes not. Sometimes its not on logout. Sometimes its on server reset, sometimes its becuase x amount of time has passed.

We also found out some people are able to join on the right character without a Steamid being attached in database. So are we lookign at the wrong thing?

Just to understand, this only happens when trying to log in on the same character with different Steam accounts?

#

So we understand the reproduction steps

#

We also do not accept reports from older game versions, you have to reproduce it on 42.13.2

clear vortex
#

same character

#

same slot, whatever you want ot call it

clear vortex
#

hmm

#

weve gone with 42.13.1 since we heard it was more stable, we tried to play on the newer version 42.13.2 but noticed alot of animals in pastures were dissapearing and mods were having major conflics, any suggestions on what we could do diffrently?

#

weve played so much project zomboid at this point, playing w/o the mods is not really an option

#

we'd rather wait a year for full release then

empty ridge
#

We can only really accept reports on the latest unstable without mods, if you cannot reproduce it there then I cannot help much in that case

I suggest playing the stable version for the best experience, if you want to help beta test, you should play the Unstable version

clear vortex
#

i'll keep you posted, might take a while however

clear vortex
empty ridge
#

Because I do not play long term characters

clear vortex
#

i see

It might not be stable enough for you depending on other factors

one last question however, weve noticed steamid's are not saving, when going into the terminal of the host, we see it DOES recognize the steam id correctly, for some reason however it does not save it to the database. also weve noticed that for some reason the server assigns the wrong character index to the wrong person, but sometimes randomly DOES pick the right one even tho it logs the wrong index. any insight on that?

#

I know were playing on 42.13.1 but i dont think assigning indexes to characters or saving steamids is a diffrence on those two versions. ive checked the changelogs and can find nothing about it

Changes the way credentials are saved

clear vortex
#

This doesnt answer my question however, additionally, we dont work with whitelists

empty ridge
#

Meaning even if you had a bug, it would be outdated since there were changes in the next version

#

One of the reasons we do not accept issues from other versions, since they can be fixed in the later ones already

#

There is also a misunderstanding how the whitelist works, every server has a whitelist

#

Even yours, you just auto add players to the whitelist

#

So its "disabled" but not really

clear vortex
#

@empty ridge not sure if this is something you can do something about, but ive tried this error on multiple versions now. and i keep losing my character.

#

its very random and only me

#

usually when a server does a resart to update mods or even when no mods are enabled. this happens. Ive uninstalled all mods, reinstalled game. but this problem persists

empty ridge
#

Since you say it is reproducible and happens only to you

#

The IP is 168.119.150.29

clear vortex
#

on normal version?

#

its random, so i hope it does work to showcase

#

@empty ridge

Unstable

clear vortex
#

and once in there, what u want me to do there?

#

i cant login and check the status of the server terminal

#

so is there someone who check it? @empty ridge

empty ridge
#

Simply try to get the issue there

clear vortex
#

well i'll try to, since how i was able to reproduce it was checking with a host, to reset, and i logout multiple times, sometimes the reset wasnt needed. But i'll keep you posted

#

pw? @empty ridge

empty ridge
clear vortex
#

sure is

empty ridge
#

You didnt set any? Servers require you to set a username and password

#

Every server does

clear vortex
#

never done it no, all my friends host without a password

#

none of them have the problem i have

#

i had this error when server had a pw before

#

i remember it cause it did not make any sense

#

but i'll make one i guess

empty ridge
#

The screenshot shows that the account password is required

clear vortex
#

yeah

#

ok my bad then

#

last time i had this exact problem

#

it was server pw that was missing

#

that was on b42.13.1 however

#

not sure if its changed

empty ridge
#

Probably just misread the message

#

They are similar enough to get confused

clear vortex
#

took a screen of it

#

i guess i did not screen it but write it out, PERHAPS i did misread it, could be

#

ok to keep you updated, i make a new account, i'll relog and see if it can replecate it

clear vortex
#

@empty ridge i'm not able to replicate it on your server for some reason. which makes me think something might be wrong with the hosted server of my buddy, even tho its all normal settings?

#

he was able to reset the server often times however, i'm guessign thats not something you can do?

empty ridge
#

Just to check if there is something unusual about the process

clear vortex
#

thing is i'm the only one who experiences this issue so far

#

but i have been trying to replicate it on your server, and im not able to replicate the problem...

#

so i would guess its a settings issue, but weve ran through it so many times...

#

i might not be a Lua developer, but i do develop for a living, so i'd like to think my troubleshooting method isnt bad

empty ridge
#

Just in case the quit command has problem

#

Also good to check how the server was installed

#

SteamCMD? Steam Client?

clear vortex
#

@empty ridge lil question again. so the losing character is good now. but ive noticed that alot of people lose their characters in MP 42.13.2. to a rollback. where they are reverted to the last ?"saved"? instance when the server has succesfully quit. ive been trying to find a answer or a workaround for that. but nothing, found this thread however that kind of seems to match with out problem and weve done some testing and it seems like this one is spot on https://steamcommunity.com/app/108600/discussions/6/690873299732846580/

Occasionally, and I really have no clue what the trigger is. After logging into a Multiplayer dedicated server, you can go about everything normally, but once you log out, and back in your character will be reset to where you were when you logged in earlier and your inventory will be reset to what it was before, but everything you have done in t...

#

weve seen this theory about the character file size exeeding 64Kb, and it kind of makes sense

#

have you found a issue with this? have you found a fix? workaround? ...

empty ridge
#

You mentioned it happens to you on vanilla right? How can you reproduce it easily?

#

Since you yourself said you simply reproduce it by logging in and logging out, or the server being restarted
