Aha, I think there was a bit of a misunderstanding around the functionality highlighted in the thursdoid. What was built was all the underlying architecture so that modders and future builds could have complex crafting systems. What you see in the video was a quick example, put together by the team, but not a fully fleshed out system. All of that functionality is in the game now so that modders can indeed create complex crafting systems. When the modding documentation comes out I think you might see more complex crafting mods being made.

I'm not sure. I tried to do a quick search for it, but couldn't find it, and I'm technically on vacation so I'm not putting too much effort into looking if it's resolved internally atm. Taking off my TIS-hat for this response, but I've always understood it as developing a mod doesn't grant dominion over an idea -- there's a lot of cool ideas that might be placed on the backburner, but "being beaten to the punch" by a mod doesn't mean that mod author has exclusive control over the idea.

So mods are the intellectual property of the mod author (as is all code). There is however nothing stopping a company from purchasing that intellectual property and incorporating it, but really, why would you? Mods have much less quality expectations on them, so you will almost always want to incorporate the idea of the mod and do it better (which you generally can do because you have access to the full code base unlike with modding most games). We have absolutely done this by hiring people directly from the modding community, but as Harber mentioned, the idea of a mod isn't covered by copyright, just the code itself, so as long as you build it yourself there's nothing stopping you.

That’s where things can get murky — our creative team has a LOT of cool ideas that haven’t been implemented yet, whether that’s due to technical feasibility, planned prioritization at a later stage, nobody with free hands to run with the idea, etc.

The onus to thank someone for their idea may fall short when the idea was independently conceived by both parties. But never fun when someone feels burned by it, however.

The "Unofficial" tools are compiled from the fork that TIS uses for their map development, since the tool they use are open source, unless they make some major changes that aren't being open pushed to git the chance that maps can't be opened in the 'official' tools is basically zero
