That's been my suspicion. There's clearly something weird going on, because some people claim to experience it frequently, and others go for hours before they run into it.
I'm pretty sure the Shove Bug can smell desperation, and only strikes when your guard is down.

its definitely a play style based thing
if someone always relies on pushes + stomps then they usually push 5x more than someone who just melees zombies to death

I was watching this to see if anything stood out, the only thing in my mind, is that it looks like the lunge for bite animation started exactly when the shove animation started, but then I feel like others have had it happen without the bite animation?
I have plundered the VHS store, and was licking my fingers for juicy exp like on b41. For a while thought there is some bug for exp from VHS, but now it's possible to get max 3lvl of skill xD damn i was confused for a while.

I LOVE modders but I wish these guys were also on here or the forum to see the devs can’t reproduce it, if he really knows the cause to let them know. That said, I assume most of the time modders ‘fix’ something it’s like fixing a leak on a bathroom by nailing the door closed - sure you can’t see the leak anymore, but you also can’t do much with the bathroom lol.

Yeah of course, sometimes they have actually fixed something and it’s worth using until the devs release the fix because they batch stuff. I was mostly just commenting on how ‘fast’ modders can fix stuff before the devs.

I am guessing they already fixed the music becasue its easy to reproduce, and its just waiting to come in a batch of other fixes
Yeah the code for this is effectively a hack, it's not actually fixing the underlying problem. So while it will give you some relief and there's no harm in using for now (I'd even recommend using it for now), it's not something we would want to implement in the code as it would likely cause issues elsewhere. That's one of the reasons why complaints of "oh look modders already fixed it, lazy devs" can be so frustrating. They fixed the symptom, but not the problem.
Are more race cars planned to be added? I feel like 3 is not enough because there's some sort of code that limits the spawn rates of these vehicles to ONLY these 3, no duplicates. Meaning only 3 racecars can spawn in the world, new rarest car type?

They're not "typos" per say, they're a slightly changed zone definition for traffic jams that means they aren't guaranteed (or near guaranteeed) to spawn a vehicle. They changed a few.

its me scared to shove the zombies due to risk of that unfair bite or scratch.
The push bug is caused in a frame perfect scenario between the zombie going in for a nice bite and the push start, it is more easily replicable at 24 fps and near impossible to replicate frame perfect at higher frames. PSA: MAX YOUR FRAMERATE WHILE SHOVING, zoom in, set your game to 240, do all that you can

you can shove if it's at a larger distance, but if you rely on muscle memory then you'll get unfairly bitten

I've had it happen a bit playing at 165 fps, but that's inevitable when killing thousands of zombies in that time. Also, level 9 strength and fitness means I usually just end up pushing the zombie automatically with that other animation

Yeah every gun I tested was doing 0.5-6 damage with headshot but shotgun was getting into the 60’s

here is quite a diffcult choice...because jarred food if vaccum sealed can last more than 1 year, i know u have a rework on the food system, but is quite hard to balance i guess to not make to easy the challenge for the players
Should be separate from the larger food rework -- the intention is that jarred produce needs to be cooked in order to be properly sealed & last for the maximum duration. Uncooked/unsealed should still have shelf life extended by a length of time that makes it feel worth gathering all of the requisite items, though.

Irl jar lids are really only meant for one use, once they are used they have a much higher risk to not make a proper seal and allow for the stuff inside to spoil. I do think jars and lids should be more common though

i have come across boxes of them or they were the jars i forget lol
I haven't done any canning in a long long time, but I do remember we would always buy new ones (reuse the mason jars though!)

food safety classifies several, the old twist-ons usually are good for one, but can be reused if its just for short term storage (like, 2 weeks) and screw-on type can be reused several times, but i honestly havent found good screw-ons yet 
there are alos some brands for twist-ons that make you change the seal after every use
Usually if it is short term then it isn't really being vacuum sealed like it would be with proper canning though 😁
i could see one of those "spring glasses" that have the lid attached and you effectively just put in a seal before boiling could be some nice high-tier loot as a reusable option

On 42.12 I detected that melee items has the same durability but seems the chance to reduce the durability has been increased, I mean, seems items like baseball or metal bar now are broken faster than before...I do not know if this is correct or not.

I can believe it's fixed internally. Here's the thing though: there seem to be a lot of other bugs popping up with this version, more so than 42.11 (like in terms of bug reports per day)
so... that means they may wait until they have a bunch of other bugs before they release the patch. So it will no longer be a hotfix but a full version. Or at least the time for the update to come out will be comparable to a full version.

I was making a joke with no other implications and have gone ahead and edited my comment to avoid confusion, but the upcoming hotfix is primarily to resolve the shove bug yes. Last I saw Harber, Dan, and Patrick were making good progress (don't want to get more specific than that)
No worries on the specifics. If more issues arise with the bug leading to a longer wait for a patch then there would just be more complaints from some about "devs lazy/whatever crap they say". Good to hear that you guys have it on the highest priority, hope all goes well in that endeavour 🙏

There's a lot of moderation stuff, but the main thing that takes up my time is staying informed and up to date on what the team is doing and what the feedback from the community is. Looking for anything that needs to be fed back to the team, or anything I can share with the community.

Nice, good to hear. I hope the sometimes toxic reddit and steam forums don't get too bad for you to read. Stepping away from social media is something some like to do if all they see is too much negativity, but for your role you kind of have to try and get through the blatant hate and rage bait to the actual critics.
That's a cool perk of the job, being able to get the early scoop on what's to come. Do you have to consult with the team or relevant devs on whether to talk about a upcoming feature just in case it isn't 100% ready?

That's what I was thinking as I wrote it out. It's great to know that you know how important it is to pick your interruptions. Although I imagine that your previous job has given you enough experiences about people interrupting your work flow.

my record is 7 months, but my safe house got corrupted and i lost all my loot
yep same thing happened, 9 months in, an update did in my house, the containers i repurposed got wiped and reset with fresh loot, deleting all mine, plus my generator, i spawned in to pitch black, surrounded by zombies, instead of cozy powered walled in house
for me it was not even a game update, the game just wrote over my base chunk
it happened when i went to loot a warehouse, i got back and my base was reset to day 0

I was playing on a hardcore server last year where someone had a similar situation except it was burns from an open fire that got them - hobbled around forever... When they finally got to the point of being able to move properly again, they went out of safety (x16 pop) and instantly died because they got over confident with their new found movement speed.

I used to make fun of people who constantly came here begging for updates, etc., but please, from one software engineer to another:
just a suggestion, but one you should genuinely consider:
We have reduced dev diaries, we have reduced information about timing. Every dev diary is just a list of patch notes, whereas the pre-beta dev diaries would at least give personal opinion estimates on timing.
internally come up with an estimate for how long it will take MP to be released, multiply it by 2 or 3, and tell us that number. That way, if it is released earlier, we will be happy, and otherwise our expectations will be appropriately set.
I do in fact know that being a desperate fan is kind of a meme in this channel, but i have largely held off on critiques or comments, with a "let them cook" philosophy. but the truth is that even at my SE job we would never get away with this level of customer feedback, especially w/ so many people who are so genuinely interested in what you're doing and really want to see you succeed.
at least show us what percentage through your planned work you are. for instance, is animals 100% MP ready, but crafting is holding things back? Knowing this, in the format you so often let us know in (the dev diaries) prior to the 42 beta release, would be phenomenal (lets except unplanned additional work for now - how many things have you tackled that are REQUIRED for MVP public release? and how big of a scope does the unplanned, still to-do work have?) . I previously could not imagine a world where we got to the end of 2025 and still didnt have build 42 in MP - but as i have absolutely no awareness of where you guys are at in this process, i have truly no clue when you expect to deliver it now. 2026? 7? 8?. Not trying to be petty or ignorant, I know how much work you guys put in and how much all of the fans fail to understand how both the industry and also you guys specifically agree to work - and fwiw, I really respect and appreciate your business model.
Long and the short of it is, I've gone from feeling like i have an idea when something is coming to absolutely no context whatsoever. the only reason im here now is because i randomly checked in. and punishing your project-long fans by saying, "check back in 6 months" or "we dont do life/death pressure here at indie store" - a dev diary or a progress update should never be a life/death pressure, and i do not understand how it has become that.
i know this will seem like unsolicited advice to all of you and you'll probably be bullshit or hear "more of the same" - but i think there is a maybe 30-minute-effort update commitment you could make at LEAST once a month that would remedy a LOT of these issues

I love solving problems for a job, my parents worked nights at the hospital, but yeah, theres an aspect of both medic/programming careers where it benefits you to slow down, make a plan, think logically, but also be able to react to new information in the moment appropriately
my dad a respiratory therapist always said "slow down, be like water"

my biggest gripe about programming is that i just don't have the creativity to design, if i have a clear goal set up and know the steps to get there i can generally reach it, but if you'd ask me to design a system from ground up I'd probably have to run

Hey, I just wanted to respond because you've put so much effort into this, well beyond a simple "MP When?", and it's pretty obvious you're reaching out with good intentions. As Puppers mentioned, ETAs and things that can infer ETAs are completely off the table going forward. Prior to B42 unstable released Lemmy made an offhand comment that "if it's not available by summer then something went seriously wrong" (not an exact quote). Well something did go seriously wrong, and the response from the community was... well extremely disappointing. This was after we had already instituted our "no ETAs" policy for similar issues as well, so yeah, not even vague mentions anymore.
I absolutely get the frustration of wanting stable and MP to release. I was a fan of the game long before I came to work for TIS and development speed was always my number 1 gripe as well. After going behind the scenes though I've realised just how complicated this game really is, and just how much development actually goes into it. TIS have a strict "no crunch" policy, we believe strongly in treating our team right, which absolutely contributes to slower development (though I'd argue it makes up time and quality in talent retention), but the largest contributing factor to the slow development is just how massive the game is under the hood. So Thursdoids, I'm right there with you. I want them back too, I loved reading them every week, gave me a lot of insights into the team and the development process. The problem with Thursdoids is they take a lot of work, and require input from a lot of people. People who at the moment really need to be focusing on their work. As you know context switching sucks as a developer and slows you down a lot. So with the faster release cycle we've temporarily paused them.

They will return as soon as we get a handle on things and things aren't as urgent, but I think at the moment the tradeoff is right where we need to focus on getting B42 stable as quickly as possible. Hey! Thanks so much for the response, and totally hear you on bad past experiences with ETA. that being said, I think there are ways you could give a "progress" metric that is detatched from date-based ETAs. And I want to pause for a sec and say, I truly really believe in your no-crunch policy; if i were starting a business this would be a 100% guarantee for me. I would sacrifice pretty much everything else in order to keep my employees happy and with a good W/L balance, so I want to clarify I'm in no way critiquing that policy.
But I believe there is a vast expanse between "Thursdoid EVERY week", "giving a concrete date on which things will release"; and "just providing a brief birds eye on progress, without time constraints", weekly thursdoid or exact dates are not the ask, and we've been over why - but as i said, a couple paragraphs or even a todo list (with unsized work, no indicators of timeboxing or estimates based on time in any way) and just showing us,
- here are the things that we plan for stable,
- here are the things we've released since unstable, and
- here are the things we have yet to do in order to reach stable
I think an update of that nature would be appropriate, even if it were short - its pretty wild that the steam page has gone since ~January without a developer post
of course i do miss thursdoid (who wouldnt!), but i want to be really clear that thursdoid is not at all what I want to propose or what i expect from you; I fully understand how much work it is to generate something as detailed and thoughtful as the thursdoid posts, and i would actually PREFER that the engineers keep cooking rather than wasting time writing blog posts!
But, even a todo list would be a tangible step up - I've seen a lot of pretty technical patch notes that 1) aren't super user friendly, 2) are hard to get an idea of whats being updated (even as a dev), and 2) on what items in the pre-release todo a given patch tackles (given that there is no pre-release todo, but this would be a really cool way to connect what these patches mean).
I remember that the company was planning a pretty substantial crafting rework beyond what was released in unstable - is that underway? has it made progress? even knowing these kinds of surface facts seem impossible
Great example was Going Medieval's checklist, which took years to fill out and items were not at all equally portioned out, but it was, roughly, a list of things in between them and release. I am missing that for this unstable -> stable period.

I been with in multiple game community and I will say pz community is the most inpatient i have ever seen. It actually sad I see people more chill with a triple A game posting a 30 dollar dlc that basically add 3 things and break the game cough sim 4 cough this is a indie studio they don't have 500 people.
The problem with giving progress updates in this way is that people then use it to estimate an ETA, and then get upset when the ETA they estimated isn't hit. We've been here before, and tried so many different things. I can't tell you the number of times I am in here trying to curb expectations because people keep coming in and saying "oh it's been X days/weeks/months, new update is coming around the corner".
And then there is a massive misunderstanding of how much work things take (which is true across all of software development). Some features that people think are complex take very little time to implement, and sometimes features that people think are simple take ages. The difference is when a webdev doesn't meet an estimate they don't have to deal with death threats and public attacks.
Currently what we're doing is the lesser of evils. There's a lot we don't like about it too, but of all the things we've tried, this is the least painful. I get that everyone wants to know when it's going to release, hell, we do too. But it's so much better for us to just focus on the quality, and let the rest come.
I hear you, totally get that you are avoiding people being stupid, and you're probably doing a great job, genuinely. I do hope you guys are able to find a better middle ground, it is quite concerning from a bystander perspective when an unstable beta has lasted nearly a full year without a 1-2 paragraph progress update - but I know that whatever you guys release (and whenever!) it will be awesome :)

Only when people are being serious, and it does stress me when they are serious because even if 99.9% of people are wonderful, 0.1% of a few hundred thousand is still hundreds of people being awful, and it can be tough to keep under control. Sadly on the internet it just takes a few people (or 1 really motivated person) to ruin your day

yeah I'm pretty sure they're skipping 42.12.2 and are going to release the patch in 42.13.... and B42 patches on average take a month to release, but with a variance of like half a month
so.... yeah. Find something else to do in the meantime lol

I think the real motivation for learning other languages is where u live so and the day to day need of conversations
Arabic scares me because of the math formulas used to derive words from the three consonant roots
also there's like 5 throat sounds that you have to distinguish
and even just speaking MSA isn't enough if you want to talk to regular speakers

but if I want to loot multiple important places in Westpoint on high pop with sprinters within the first three days, I do need to shove.
school, tool shop, book store, dozens of homes and garages, etc.
sprinters especially make the bug unmanageable because it's very easy for them to get within the range threshold to trigger the bug
and I don't want to play without them
i tried 1% sprinters the other day , can def see that push bug being annoying with any amount of sprinters

no you don't get it. To start blacksmithing you need a large collection of items, at least if you want to do it quickly.
and many of those items don't spawn in just normal homes

I multishove a lot so... yeah. Combine with sprinters and now you can sorta see why I died to the bug on the very first day of 42.12.

I made a suggestion about this but I was interested in hearing how everyone would feel about this. I’ve been playing Project Zomboid for a long time, and while I love how deep and immersive the game feels, I think the menu and character UI and such should receive some sort of update. We've seen changes to gameplay, graphics, and even UI in-game coming in B42, so I believe it would be nice to receive an update or options to match the coming in B42.
Menu & Game UI Options
I personally would love to see more flexibility for the main menu and in-game UI, with of course the classic, style, and a more modern and softer style (matching that seen in the menus below).
This could apply to the game's menu UI and the menus in game. Along with this, the option between selecting your own colours, images or GIFs as the menu background without needing to install mods. Another menu option could include a dynamic menu with a 3D model of your last played character, slowly moving or following after your mouse. I personally feel as though that would be so cool!
A few options such as these would make the game feel much more personal and visually fresh, while still allowing fans of the classic look to keep it as-is.
Character Customization Improvements
I would like to see a few options or changes in character customization, such an option between the classic customization and this where instead of a small character image there could be a dynamic character in the center of the menu, in a 3D environment (such as a dimly lit room, forest, garage, camp with other survivors in the background, one of the spawn locations, etc), with options for name, body, hair, etc on the left and clothing options on the right. Accessories, tops, bottoms, etc are placed into sections when all clothing is unlocked so things like glasses are closer to hats and rings.
It would also be nice to see hairstyle and clothing/accessory options and more displayed with images or icons in a grid instead of a list for those who have this option selected. To keep the grim and post apocalyptic feeling in the customization menu, hovering over these options could display a bloodied, dirtied, torn or broken variant of it.
I would love to see more idle animations while customizing your character, such as loading a gun magazine, turning their head after hearing a branch snap, fighting off a zombie, or something (these are just off the top of my head.) It could also be cool to turn these animations or select a static pose to take a photo of your character in whichever environment you selected (maybe a pose of them sneaking, or if you selected the campground, talking with another survivor, sitting on a tree stump, etc)
These UI elements would be more visually appealing and give a better idea of how your character looks.
Yes, Project Zomboid UI is functional and does fit the style of PZ, but to some people it feels a bit dated and retro. Adding customization options players could tailor their experience and keep things visually engaging as the game evolves into B42 and beyond. I personally would love to see some changes to the trait menu as well to look more modern, similar to the two attached images, such as maybe scrolling through the occupation icons on the top (hovering over them will provide a description of it) with the positive and negative traits on the left & right with the middle displaying the character skills/stats. But, how does everyone else feel? Would you guys appreciate something like this or is it an unnecessary change? Excited to hear from everyone!

I think they have plans to redo the ui eventually
the background art is nice but mainly for the character customization i wish they took a more sims approach.. scrolling through various outfits and hairstyles is bothersome
and if the character was actually displayed in a 3d scene like the sims 🔥

theoretically yes, the engine is completely made by the devs so they can gut the UI and redo it.
just like how they redid a lot of things in B42
i’m not entirely sure but i think that at least for the menu screen and such, unless they went with an approach like some of my other suggestions in that post (having a 3D character in the title screen that follows your mouse) then they wouldn’t have to change the code, only the buttons
if all they did was changed how the buttons & background looked at least but i could very well be wrong
