how to level up masonry to 1? also, if concrete is needed for SO many things, damn, thats hard to build anything out of stone?
All right, so bottom line, after some experimentation on my own and review of what some Youtubers have done, here's where the skills seem to be in value/usefulness (not counting combat/health skills), based on how easy they are to level and what you can actually do with them, compared to B41:
Carpentry: Surprisingly better than before, as the most useful stuff can now be crafted at lower levels, and feels easier to level too.
Carving: Vaguely useful, and easy to level
Cooking: More useful than B41, since there's new recipes that require certain cooking skills
Electical: Slightly more useful than B41, since you can get generator skill by leveling it up, still a grind to level, but does feel faster
Glassmaking: Why bother? Seriously, I'm asking you, there really doesn't seem to be much point to this skill, as most of the items are readily available for looting. I guess if you're doing a wilderness only game, maybe
Knapping: See Glassmaking
Masonry: Could be useful if you're playing on abundant resources, but as it stands right now, uses up too many resources for too little point. Brick walls also should be significantly increased in HP to make it worth it
Metalworking: Seems borderline pointless except for helping with Mechanics
Mechanics: Feels unchanged in leveling and purpose from B41
Pottery: Seems interesting, but I'm unclear as to why you would bother
Tailoring: Seems unchanged from B41, but easier to level
Welding: I'm not sure why this was split from Metalworking, feels like they should have stayed together
Agriculture: REALLY important, and levels like Farming did in B41, and as of right now, it feels like this should be a priority for anyone playing Stardew Valley. Way harder to level than Farming, because of the increased growth times of plants.
Animal Care: Even after raising chickens, I still don't know how the levels in this are supposed to work.
Butchering: Even after trying it myself and watching some playthroughs, I still can't see what this is supposed to effect/change by having higher skills. Meat yields seem roughly the same.
Helpful guide, but as for all the 'why bothers', I find that skills like Glassmaking are very placeholder atm until more tech trees get finalized
I've been viewing the unstable release as getting everything from the crafting update except for the actual crafting lol
That's my assessment for Pottery and Knapping, but I still don't see why you'd want Glassmaking even when everything's implemented. Except maybe for jars?
Or Windows for your house, but windows are still moveable.
Well again the idea is, be able to do everything from being naked in the woods

I think the problem is everyone is viewing each individual skill tree as being equally as important as something like carpentry, which I dont think is the intention

I mean, in B41, you could get by without most skills, and I think that's stil the case in B42. Even carpentry doesn't feel quite as essential as it used to.

I don't really think returning the right click based convenience would cause issues, there's only so much one can do with bread, even rightclicking a branch clearly allows processing it in multiple ways, so why does some items with just 1 function require menu

Plenty of stuff to come for b42 over time, it ain't over any time soon. Unstable so far already has so much, so keep your eyes peeled when devs start pushing some patches starting 2nd week of January or something
yea once we are no longer in the holiday limbo they will be pushing out patches pretty frequently, at least they did in B41
So you do actually still get queasy from being around stinky bodies too long - people were saying you didn't anymore
so smell the stink for too long and you get queasy, that is easy
i think if you reach max stench you start to get queasy, otherwise no
so like a simple bandana can prevent you from getting queasy
also i think this is surely a bug i dont think it should be that long
I tried bandana and medical mask and it seemed to have no affect on stink
gas mask, and SCBA respirator do though
but I am short sighted on this character so it scuffs my vision

I'm kind of wondering how long it'll take for someone to post one of those nomad life playthroughs, or a "nature only" kind of playthrough
Especially with the new crafting systems, that kind of playstyle will definitely blow up when the crafting system gets more development
Well I know that a couple of 16x pop zero to hero twitch streamers are basically doing something kinda like a nature only mainly because they can't clear out a town quicker than usual so they're kind of forced to live out in nature and forage to survive
I don't think we'll see a full YouTube series on it for a while though, until like you said once the crafting system gets more development

I don't know about teleporting but you can lead them with a rope into an animal trailer and drive them back

Idk maybe use debug mode to despawn & then respawn then back to their enclosure I don't think animals have some form of claiming system which gives you the ability to just teleport them back to the enclosure

Yeah, this whole thing is kind of new to me. I played around 1200 hours in B41, most of it on a heavily modded server and I was absolutely mowing zombies down, even when I ran out of ammo and had to resort to melee, then resort to whatever I could find. I'm finding I have to be a lot more careful now
on point 5. If the goal is to have players specialize, then I think you should be able to hide/track individual skills and those marked will go to a separate tab where you can unmark them later if you want. This should reduce the clutter except for people going jack of all trades.
It's actually somewhat refreshing
Yeah before I played a lot of 4x pop and on servers with pop higher than that but now I'm struggling to fight in default apocalypse population and it feels so new and fresh to me it feels like b42 isn't just an update I've been waiting 3 years for even if it's incomplete it feels like it's new life and a completely new way to experience the game again to make me feel like I've played project zomboid for the first time despite having 1000 hours on it
I think the devs do want some form of toggle sandbox option for mp to prevent people from doing the jack of all trades route, and to encourage cooperative trading between players whilst including some form of affinity system where if a player is skilled in a profession/skill they can easily pick up things & learn and develop new things & skills from related professions though would be limited in what they can do outside their own profession

some way to redcue the skill tab clutter would also be nice though
though I guess thats why lovely modders & their quality of life mods exist for
I don't think they want to force anything, even on servers. That's just their vision for the game. But 5. was only about "we are getting more skills and need better UI to handle that amount"
Yeah I'm just saying it'll be a toggable sandbox option for servers wanting that community building/trading between players and factions

I think the best part about the combat updates is I can't be cocky anymore
like for ease of use? cause that should be an emergent dynamic from having lots of professions with difficult to farm exp. Servers that don't want this dynamic just need to increase exp multipliers

My first two playthroughs, my characters died on literally the first day
And that isn't something I've experienced for a long time
Maybe we'll not see it in the current version of build 42 but I could see it being a possibility when we get more traits & professions with build 42
Although to be fair my first playthrough of B42 started with the tutorial mistake of firing off the pistol you spawn with
they're still working on tweaking exp rates & the like as well
In the vein of the player trading you mentioned, I'm actually pretty interested in seeing whether we'll get some fully medieval servers akin to what I hope we'll get from Anvil Empires
I think once we get multiplayer in unstable people are going to test this out. It just needs to be more valuable for most people to trade with other rather than grind the exp to make stuff themselves in order for this dynamic to catch
I agree its probably not the most feasible of ideas for something like an public multiplayer server but with servers set up in project zomboid streamer/youtuber communities & roleplay servers I could see this being a huge deal for people who want to expand out into more professions

As far as I know barricading/unbarricading windows & dismantling car wrecks gives welding xp but it's a pitiful amount and propane has got the same drain bug the batteries and car battery's are experiencing

Yeah it's annoying I don't think there's any trait or profession which gives welding levels either so there's no possible boost for it, even with 0 skill and a 3x multiplayer from a skill book that's only 20xp from 1 car wreck which eats a full propane torch it's kinda ridiculous

You can't use them to refill propane torches or tanks but you can use them to refill lanterns
So for now they're kind of an alternate light source to torches

ok best grind method I've found is to build and dismantle a metal floor repeatedly at level 0
kinda dumb way to practice welding to me but ok
How much xp does that wield as opposed to barricading/unbarricading or car wrecks because you are kind of dumping away welding rods or whatever it costs to make the floor and the propane cost unless you get all that back when you dismantle the floor minus the propane
Hello everyone, after build 42.0.1 and 42.0.2, I was finally able to play a little bit of Project Zomboid on my Macbook. But unfortunately, at a certain point the game stops working. I can start a new save, and even play again, but again the game stops working after a while. I would like to know if there is anyone else here in the community who is trying to play through MacOS as well. Are you having the same difficulties? I know that future updates may fix these problems, but I would like to know if you have changed any performance settings that can avoid these problems or minimize them. Hugs and great Zomboid to all!

like 10 with the level 1 book, looks like putting a metal sheet over a door gives me about 6 with that book active? your probably right about that

at least carp has things to make at the low levels, welding just has almost nothing you can do until level 3

Maybe it's fine in the crafting ui but my propane just up and deleted itself from my torch, 1 full propane torch dissappear into the aether and I lost a full tank of propane this one time
I do get its unstable btw its just a bit frustrating that's all most of the time when stuff like that happens though I usually just respawn it back in with debug
I have my propane tank just sat on the floor, you can thankfully craft things from nearby objects like the "refill propane" recipe
without having to cumbersomely pick it up

@regal spindle Ok so from testing with a 3x skill book multiplier barricading a window still only granted me 6xp on 1x xp settings default apoc, building a metal floor & dismantling it didn't yield any xp regardless of the book multiplier or not and 1 car wreck dismantled gave me 3.75xp without a multiplier & with a multiplier it was 12xp
what I'm most shocked about still is the xp from car wrecks that's a massive decrease compared to build 41
it was progbably targeted, car wreck dismantling used to be a way to speedlevel
that seems to be a theme in b42, going for the meta speed strats and replacing them with er... not terribly much actually

i think dismantling should always give you a little xp when it comes to carpentry/welding, but it should be considerably lower than other ways
when it comes to electrical, it seems reasonable to both DO get and get quite a bit of XP from it because realistically you will probably learn much more about how a electronic device works by taking it apart compared to dismantling a piece of wood
It should give XP but give them at exponentially lower rates at higher levels
Even so you could still probably learn some things from woodworking by dismantling its called reverse engineering
You won't learn just by dismantling things
If that's how it works irl, I should have already surpassed computer engineers since I dismantle a lot of PCs

i have been doing testing and winter wheat grew just fine. The health on the crop was staying at 100 with 1 fertilizer and 1 compost but any other crop seems to just keep losing health no matter with 1 fertilizer and 1 compost. Its just really weird

I think its something to do with a stat on the crop called cursed. I saw someone talking about it in this chat a while back but for some reason that stat just slowly kill a crop. There is a mod to remove that stat/debuff and I might start playing with that until TIS fix this bug. Well I think its a bug, tbh I don't really know if it is.

You get it if you plant a crop outside of its growing season

What's weird is it still seems to pop up even if you disable growing seasons in sandbox
So something about them is bugged
If I check the code, in SFarmingSystem.lua, it applies itself to all generic objects if seasons is set on but in farming_vegetableconf.lua, it applies itself globally whenever badPlant() function is called and doesn't check for seasons
Might be what's causing the agriculture bugs

You need to remove the flesh first and then remove the fur
Then you need a bowl of brain tan to tan the leather at the barrel
After that you go dry it at the drying rack

PSA for spear mains: There are 3 primary skills for spears now. They're knapping, carving, and maintenance
High carving means a better condition spear. Knapping for the spearheads (or just fireharden them if you're low level at knapping)
Also spears are the best for combat maintenance since combat maintenance has two ways to gain XP in B42. One is through regular use, the other is when your weapon loses condition
