genuinely, what are you concerned about? I dont think anyone's going to go and do something drastic to this guy, if the artist faces any consequences and gets less jobs for using ai that's just a natural consequence of leveraging wide scale content theft from other artists

To be fair a consensus I've seen is that it was ai + artist editing to fix it, so there's no doubt some real art in the slop

I guess they will grow to me with time, they are not that bad to be honest. You can make the clock being smaller again on the settings tho.

In my opinion the new moodles are indicative of the TIS teams move from the previous low-rez pixel style to a new sleeker style, all the parts of the game just aren’t there yet

I say these things because I love art and have a lot of respect for artists, but if you have valid criticism then you should tell me what I'm doing that's a disservice to art in specific terms—not just casting a wide net and saying vagueries. I also really think you should evaluate and be critical of your own position here, because I genuinely don't think the people you're talking to mean any ill will towards artists and you're coming in way too hot

Honestly I feel like the hate for AI art is overrated.
Yeah, AI art is not art per the definition of art, it's more like a tool to help you visualise without having to try to draw yourself or hire an artist.
Sure, it'll take away the paid aspect for lower quality artists, but it's not like people will stop liking actual art or anything.
We're certainly not getting rid of AI art, so might as well embrace it and work with it.
Obviously, I'm not an artist, so my take is kind of meh.
That being said, I do feel like IndieStone can actually afford to pay an artist, so if they paid an artist, expecting actual art, and got AI art in return then I'd expect them to complain.
The new loading screen's don't look 100% AI imho, even if they are, they've been heavily touched up to be more coherent/consistent.

A little bit of it is that I find it really interesting to see artists deconstructing ai art and picking up on things that my untrained eye can't catch; I am genuinely sorry that you feel put out by people criticizing AI art and feel caught in the crossfire, but I want to be clear that like: yeah, artists make mistakes, and that doesn't make them not artists. As I said, I was discussing this with an artist friend and they picked up on some things I thought were really interesting that are mistakes (usually) unique to ai. I feel like I've been pretty receptive to people suggesting it's not ai (e.g. microphone find), I'm not going into this dogmatically as you suggest I am
It does feel disingenuous to suggest that making legitimate criticisms somehow makes someone complicit in people taking it too far though because like: if theyre using AI art, we SHOULD call them out on it. I never expressed harm towards the artist, nor do I feel like the way I have acted has been like FUCK THIS GUY RAUUUGH like man I'm just having a conversation. I think people have exhausted this sufficiently enough but like, I did try to end this conversation with you twice. I said 'hey I just don't think we're going to see eye to eye' but you kept belittling me, called someone else 'braindead' and were way more rude to me than I was to you at any point in this convo.

Serious question: What if you train an AI on your own backlog of art - does that make it more or less ethical?
Big issue is that all current models aren't trained ethically; they scrape art, including from IP protected sources, and then profit off that stolen work. Theoretically someone could make ethical llm/agis by paying people to make training art or words but right now it's just all stolen
And that's not good, but it's gotten too far to be able to scrub that out, so we're better off just rolling with it 
I think that's the only ethical way to do it but ai requires so so much art that I'm not sure it's feasible to get models that don't look like nightmare fuel purely on the output of one person, they'd have to get lots of artists to provide art

This is the kind of attitude that will help AI embed itself in our culture; it's easy not to care but we can absolutely push for legislation to prevent things getting worse/restrict profits based on if training data was stolen, it's inaccurate to say that it's better for us to just give up. It's more convenient individually, but it won't make the world better
AI has already embedded itself in our culture, it's practically inevitable, we literally cannot stop it.
I for one think it has more benefits than downsides, though I have a pretty blank opinion on AI art and AI as a whole, I mostly just compare it to typical industrialisation

the problem with like 99% of ai criticism is literally this, starting & ending with "does it look appealing to me?" i have seen some good-looking ai art but we will never get to see art made by artists who never got to try it or never got to put themselves out there cos they were gatekept by tools like ai
AI itself is only half the problem, the other half of the issue is (mostly but not only) laziness and the willingness to take the easiest route possible

i assume its a bit of both, as in the weapon skill and the strength skill have a influence
They should replace muscle strain with fatigue and have it gain slower with high strength and fade faster with high fitness, and it should only cause pain when excerising the fatigued muscles

I absolutely agree with the inclusion of the mechanic but it makes early game very very difficult. Adrenaline should also be modded in, one of my favourite mods made it so panic overrides sleep to a certain degree allowing you to escape unwanted fights. This should be added + high panic reduces felt pain

Yes and no. The map extensions is mainly to the west. But there's procedural forest around the map now making it practically infinite.

Yeah as tcn its take a bit of effort and patience to learn but once you know how it all works its fun and becomes easier once you know the process. Watching the video series they linked is recommended.

Ngl, the whole backlash is weird. Nonsensical even, speaking as an artist who doesn't use diffusion in projects -- though I do use a lot of VFX software even in pixel art. It truly smells by the screech of people scared for their livelihood and their ignorant blind followers. However, I kind of would liked if the artwork was more inline with older style lot more, perhaps with better composition.

If they had more texture on it, it wouldnt look like AI. The problem is it has similar shininess and weird lighting as AI so if you break that up people wont notice.

if you actually looked at the "6 fingered" zombie its just the lighting on one of the fingers that makes it look like six
Thing is, a lot of diffusion models actually are trained on human art, it is not an inherent trait of diffusion, but of the art the DL algo picks up on. It is an abundance of not following patterns that are clear signs of it being used to the end.
I feel like it's touched-up AI art. The zombies don't even seem consistent between the loading screens.

level up your weapon skill to drastically reduce the buildup amount, or turn down muscle strain via sandbox options, personally i like it as is

The new loading screen art just doesn't really fit the feel of the game regardless of how good it is or how AI-gen it is IMO
downscale them into pixel art level yet slightly higher res than current moodles, edit heck out of the odd ones, clean them up, give it some AA and you have nicer moodles.

- Too many zeds to clear a path easily unarmed
- Hopping large fences isn't as foolproof

So far I have only shot the shotgun and it was fine - just make sure the reticle is zeroed as much as possible and you have a red dot in the center (it's pretty subtle colour change)
I tried blickying a few dudes and couldn't do anything with the starter m9, wasn't sure if it was just not having a shooting build as I was playing around with melee and strain.

M9 and shotgun cant really aim well right now for me, also jams alot for the M9. Also the issue of there being too many assholes, and not enough bullets, making clearing towns with guns basically impossible now.

They want the combat to be hard and if they make it too easy with guns then the meta will be to just use guns... if they make melee to easy the meta will be slay all the things. From what I can tell the meta is to lure and loot and scoot, which is kinda what they always wanted

Less playstyles isnt really that fun i think, not everyone is going to want to play the game the same way
I think the new combat changes are a step in the right direction and I like the core concept, they just need to tweak it a little bit
same here i had to respawn 3 times to get past the mob and grab an axe on apocalypse diff
Because melee combat right now feels way too punishing, especially for returning or new players to project zomboid
I love the new items, just wish I could stick the angled flashlights to a front pocket or backpack strap
I don't disagree - but also balance needs to be a big thing to keep in mind. Plus we ARE talking about early game, I am sure that as we play it will get easier, just like it did in B41 example is if you hover over a melee weapon skill it tells you that muscle fatigue lowers as you level it. But in the end that is why Custom Sandbox mode is a thing.
Maybe we can both agree that it used both ai for the base and real artist to work out the kinks from it?

rain still doesnt wash clothes and weapons and i can stay outside while raining for 2 hours and my character isnt getting wet
I feel like the muscle strain makes it too hard to not take Strong on melee-focused builds, and that crimps a lot of my builds that I want to do some useful stuff day 1. Might just be shaking the rust off since I've been taking a break for a while this year.
It would also help if fitness and strength affected combat fatigue and not just weapon level, because apparently tly according to thatguypredz who was a playtester said that strength and fitness have no impact on combat fatigue despite what the skills says

yeah i turned off the muscle fatigue so i can go back to playing around with the other features and looking for bugs, it sucks swinging twice and cramping up immediately. Having a lot of fun noticing the small mods being made baseline - i just submitted a bug report around vehicles and noticed that the fuel side indicator is now vanilla, very cool
at high strength you can swing a lot more but the muscle fatigue creeps up on you regardless, I think the idea behind it is to prevent infinity swinging your way through an entire conga line horde

I am keeping it on so I can submit a report of how I feel about it once it hit later game (hopefully)

well with stealth actually working now you presumably won't need to fight every zombie you see, the default probably needs tweaking, but it's a sandbox setting anyways so..
best would be to link muscle fatigue to strength/fitness or tune it down so my character doesnt feel like a noodle after killing 2 zeds
Yeah fair enough this is only day 1 or 2 for some people in the unstable build, but I have faith in the devs that they'll listen to our feedback and flesh things out

I'm on a 9 strength character and I can fight for a bit without the muscle pain hitting me
theoretically (per the tooltips for the strength and weapon skills) the fatigue goes down with higher levels of both. But it's at the bottom of the things im' actually interested in looking at/stress testing about unstable so someone else will have to provide more substantive feedback on it.
unrelated other feedback, i don't mind the moodles actually, they're a bit jarring as a change of style but i'd rather focus on how you need a mod to figure out what the moodles actually mean mechanically. Might be a little too metagamey but i like to know that if i'm stressed/panicked how much it affects damage or physical coordination

Ok I can say that there is one bug with build 42 unstable, it's the map loading distance. I noticed this when I got to the skyscraper in Louisville from the teasers. I looked north and all I could see was black squares. Then I realized, that the map could only load so far at once, and I saw beyond that limit.

Mine are very quick, M.2 SSD - did not uninstall my mods, as I knew they would get auto disabled when B42 booted for the first time.

Most of the mods won't work anyway because they use the old filepath system. So far these are the ones that have updated (since my last relaunch of the game)

After some testing, it seems weapon skills are more important than strength/fitness when it comes to muscle fatigue. My toons with good weapon skills last longer than those with just high strength/fitness (This is on spears)
maybe it kinda works like maitinance but in reverse
From what I've read, strength and fitness have no bearing whatsoever on muscle fatigue/strain. Personally, I'm not a fan at all. I took a high fitness/strength character so I wouldn't have to worry about it much, only to have it kick in after 5 swings.
I feel like another part of the muscle fatigue thing is to try and get you to focus on your weapon affinity, and not be jack of all trades

Stomps unironically is still the early game combat king. 5/5 gets to kill like 15 before getting strained versus like 6-8 on 1 short blunt
Muscle strain does not affect big steppy, so yeah it is super strange how much you're encouraged not to use a weapon

Why does this room turn pitch black when i close the curtain, wouldnt light bleed through from the curtain and door? also its a video game so youre not able to feel vibrations or anything to understand where a zombie is in relation to this room, so youre just gonna die. And your eyes should get adjusted to dark rooms as well. idk where to post this but this just seems like bad game design

It was pretty curious, but a friend whos stream I was watching, was going through thick forest area and the path he took remained lit as if the the character "remembered" the way back from where he came from, and rest of the forest on screen was pitch blackish as if you can't see through trees at all, like the trunks were far wider than normal
willing to guess that is one of the bugs with lighting, or Kentuckian forests are full with short trees with leafage covering your line of sight entirely

Your eyes dont adjust to a pitch black room because theres zero light to use. But yeah the curtain probably shouldnt totally block light, and the foot of the door should bleed a bit of light too

Every time I see someone show a clip of this suggesting fowlplay I see their mouse positioned in the wrong spot. I think 99% of the time it is user error and not the games fault, so not a whole lot can be done about it
It's an inherent flaw to isometric perspective, but there should probably be something put in place to ease it off

I dunno I don't like it, it feels like your control is taken for even engaging combat. Not saying it is bad, but in the current case, fact it causes pain, and pain is just a huge debuff is just... feels not thought through.

It's a deliberate nerf to melee combat, which was very strong. But stealth seems viable now, zombies are definitely much more oblivious than before
With increased zombie concentration, it feels like a huge discouragement not to engage with zombies at all. Fact you can just live elsewhere in woods is seemingly just encouraged where fun is drained because there isn't much action going on.
with the muscle strain mechanic it feels like its the first time your character has ever used their arms in their entire life
I don't know, I've chopped up wood with an axe before, it does get quite tiring after some time
Right now my unskilled, below average strength character still managed to kill 150 zombies with a crowbar by mid day 2
I like the muscle strain. Forces me to prepare more instead of just getting a hammer and going ham at zeds
it gets tiring in terms of exhaustion but its not like your arms just collapse from swinging an axe/pickaxe 5 times in a row

also with guns, i dont get how none of these hit. I know its the panic or muscle strain pain making my aim bad but like how do my bullets just phase into nonexistence when shooting at a group of zombies? It should definitely hit still but just shouldnt do a lot of damage. Its pretty lame when this happens

Oh, yeah, strength definitely affects how quickly muscle strain hits you. A minimum strength character gets hit hard by it

To be honest, if it was mostly affecting players with weaker stats, I think I would have accepted it. It would make more sense. I try to look at it from game design angle as well.
I don't know what your experience is, but my current character has 4 strength and he's doing pretty fine. I do push and stomp a lot though, so it distributes the strain.
From a game design perspective, I feel combat definitely needed some kind of nerf, shamblers were trivial to fight before. And it's implemented sensibly compared to a game like CDDA, where "normal" characters have virtually no stamina
The idea of muscle strain is to prevent players from killing a whole horde in a day. With good stats or not.

Seriously, the new darkness is way more realistic. I was very surprised seeing pitch black rooms whenever all light sources were covered/off.

Darkness hides you from zombies, but it also narrows down your vision cone significantly. Basically both the zombies and you can sneak up on each other.
I just hope the battery life of lamps has been buffed...

Obviously but like, it can jump buildings pretty easy once a blaze is big enough. But due to the restrictions of the game engine, that's very hard to depict. Whole towns can burn down if nothing intervenes

I think it's about leaning into realism or gameplay, with me leaning more towards dialling it down as to not ruin half of a city due to one unfortunate fire. To me it just feels too punishing
Tbf, if realistic fire was a thing, half of the towns would be burnt to rubble, given there’s already a couple of burnt-up houses at the start of the game

I know this build is meant to be a stepping stone to the future but my god its a great stepping stone, I've talked a fair amount of smack about Zomboid and its returned and smacked me just as hard back - I really cannot wait to see the future of this game. Obviously going to enjoy this new build but the future is so bright!

The moodles came from a version where the world was pixelated, which is why I think they were redesigned.

i prefer some new moodles but i definitely dislike a few (e.g. the scared one, the hurt one)
ive had a character customisation mod with different face options finished for a few months now but the vanilla textures are so simple that i've been totally stuck on how to make them look different lmao
I can see what people mean by the moodles being cute.. some of them definitely are, and it has helped warming up to them lol
That being said, if they wanted to do smooth-style moodle icons, it might be best to do the same with every other icon so that it is at least consistent
