I've never done it but I work on AWS. I'm guessing you'll want a ram focused machine image, like an r5a.large maybe. You'll want to put it in a public subnet in your VPC (a subnet that has an internet gateway) and assign it an elastic ip. Then you'll want to open the game ports in the inbound security group. I think with the internet gateway, elastic ip, the AMI and it's EBS for storage you're going to be looking at as much or more than dedicated server hosting though.

Unless you make an image of it and then spin it down when you're not using it

If there's services you want to use that don't fit in free tier, then start with a plan on how to turn them all off when you're not using them

for sure, I have several self-hosted servers with hundreds of GB that cost $100-200 used

and aws server with that much ram probably exceed that cost in a month 😄

you mentioned india so I did it in hyderabad region, but it's actually (very) slightly cheaper in us-east-1 that I'm used to (91.98 USD)

as long as you set it up so that you can stop the instance when you're not using it though, it would be cost effective at the cost of some convenience

(btw, keep in mind you'll also be paying for the ebs storage and no way to stop that, it'll be a constant cost)

I'm currently using Bisect Hosting, on 16gb ram plan

So far it's running stable with 8 concurrent players , didn't even touch 7gb ram while having 160+ mods

Yea I've always self-hosted just because a) I already have servers for other hobbies/tasks and b) I live in a tech area with lots of used servers for cheap available

So I don't know too much about the service providers aside from just general costs

It's not really a networking concept per se, but I would recommend looking into kubernetes (abbreviated k8s) if you're interested in learning cloud

It will come down to several things like power cost, and upfront cost in your area, to where they will 'break even'

For me I consider them helpful for my career so I overlook cost to a degree but it is smart to consider

You're trading a likely much lower long term cost for a much higher upfront cost, but how much of a difference exactly depends on your region

fiber has slightly helped with the monopoly, in that it got away from the coaxial infrastructure, but in other ways it just creates another monopoly because fiber installation is expensive
