#I cant join a server

I am trying to access a private server created by a community of users who want to play PZ together.

The problem is that everyone else can access except me. The game crashes fatally at the moment the "Click to start" message appears. At first I thought it was a problem related to mods (it wasn't). Then I thought it was the game files corrupted and did Steam verification (also not). So I asked the administrator to pass me the server log where my connection is listed, and I found this error that may be the cause of my problem:

[12-07-24 23:48:00.497] > ZNet: OnValidateAuthTicketResponse response=AuthTicketCanceled SteamID= ******
[12-07-24 23:48:00.497] > ZNet: Auth failed response=AuthTicketCanceled state=3 SteamID= *******
[12-07-24 23:48:03.494] > ConnectionManager: [disconnect] "receive-disconnect" connection: guid= ******** ip= ****** steam-id= ******** access= username="339renzo" connection-type="Disconnected"
AuthTicketCanceled (1104)

If you need the log.zip I can pass it to you, just ask for it.

Two wild guesses:

  1. Probably not, but make sure you're not in offline mode for Steam
  2. Close Steam and re-open to apply any pending updates to it.

Hello, thank you for your reply.

  1. I do not have the offline mode activated.
  2. Steam is up to date. I have also tried restarting the application several times but the problem persists.

Hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc (or your preferred way to open task manager).
Go to Performance tab
What is your current system uptime?

fervent atlas
#

My current uptime is 6 hours

fleet tartan
#

Aight definitely not that then. All sorts of weird can happen when left on too long, and Windows shutdown isn't really shutdown these days (thanks Microsoft...)

#

Same problem if you try to join a public server?

fervent atlas
#

I have joined 3 different servers and there is no problem.

fleet tartan
#

Try unloading all mods anyway, then trying to connect.

#

Would you be willing to share the server details just for me to attempt a join this side? Can DM it.

#

And yes, we may as well have the logs

fervent atlas
fleet tartan
#

Skip that then. Unless you want to go full scorched earth by unsubbing all mods and re-installing the game

fleet tartan
#

This server hates you, doesn't it.....

fervent atlas
#

I will send you the server details so you can try logging in right now

fleet tartan
#

Aight, go for it. While I'm trying that, please up the server log and your own client logs someplace

#

DM those as well, as they will contain info you probably don't want public

fleet tartan
#

Right, I've managed to get in fine and quit out OK. Deffo not a server problem then.

#

Have you tried using/not using the steamrelay when connecting to server?

fervent atlas
fleet tartan
#

It's Steam's solution to some network issues. Basically it passes your connection to the server through the Steam network instead of direct connecting to the server

#

Your server doesn't have the right port opened, but you can still try connecting with it. I can join with or without it on

#

If you can join with relay enabled, it's definitely a network issue somewhere

fervent atlas
#

I'll check it out in a second

fleet tartan
fervent atlas
#

It did not work, the only difference is that now I get a red warning message saying that port 17300 is closed, nothing else.

fleet tartan
#

Right, scratch that then

fervent atlas
#

Im from Argentina

#

The server is hosted in GTX NAEast

fleet tartan
#

You've said you've restarted/updated steam, but could you also please try logging out and logging back in? (Steam menu, Sign Out)

#

Good connection

#

Damn lot better than mine lol

fervent atlas
#

Im already logged in again

fleet tartan
#

It all looks focused around the Steam auth issue. I'm pretty much spent though sorry. Have been looking at a load of other threads with the same problem, but probably nothing you haven't read or tried already.

Last thing I could possibly suggest is to spin up another server in a slightly different geo location and see if you can settle there

fervent atlas
#

Thanks for the help anyway, I too have run out of ideas.

Can you share your logs.zip file found in C:\Users\YourUserName\Zomboid?

fleet tartan
frail salmon
#

Can you also share the latest “hs_err_pid” file found in your main game folder “Steam\steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid”?

#

Since there is nothing wrong in this other log, seems to just hang

#

Are you perhaps clicking a lot while the game is loading? Since if an application is loading, clicking while its doing that causes it to hang

frail salmon
#

Seems to specify an issue with "gameoverlayrenderer64"

#

Do you have any overlays enabled? Such as the Discord overlay?

#

Or the Steam overlay?

#

Can you disable both?

fervent atlas
#

I just deactivated them, shall I try logging in?

frail salmon
#

Yes

fervent atlas
#

It did not work. 😕

frail salmon
#

Seems like a part of it can be related to the Net framework

#

Try reinstalling it as mentioned here

#

Other than that, can you check the Windows Reliability monitor for any ProjectZomboid application crashes there? If you do find any, can you share a screenshot of the Technical Details section so we can check the errors that show up there?

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3575353/troubleshooting-windows-10-with-reliability-monitor.html
https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/sk-sk/000178177/how-to-use-windows-reliability-monitor-to-identify-software-issues

Built right into Windows 10 and 11, this old-school tool helps diagnose crashes, hangs, and other issues.

fervent atlas
#

This event is from the last time I tried to log in 15 minutes ago.

#

It's next to this error too, I guess it's because the computer crashes when crashing PZ, so I have to force the process to close.

#

All the errors I've had in the last 6 hours are completely the same as these two.

#

Regarding the .NET Framework, Windows found corrupted files and informs me that it has repaired them.

#

This event is different but already several hours ago

frail salmon
#

Since these monitor logs seem to just be generally Windows related

#

This only happens when joining this specific server, right?

fervent atlas
fervent atlas
#

Bad news, it does not work unhappy

frail salmon
#

But you could try creating a new character and loading in a different town than before

#

To check if its specific to that character

fervent atlas
fervent atlas
frail salmon
#

I think I can only suggest contacting the server owners to help you test the issue in that case

#

Since its a problem only on their server

fervent atlas
#

Sure, thanks for your help as well

fervent atlas
#

I have good news for you @frail salmon @fleet tartan , despite being confident that my hardware could support the mods of the server (in Singleplayer it worked very well), I decided to lower the resolution and the graphic quality of the game and I was able to successfully enter the server. I don't know why this happened (RAM problems, resolution?). I came to this conclusion after reinstalling and reviewing the new errpid that has been created after trying to enter, I attach it for you to save this information if someone has a similar problem.

#

I have 16GB of memory, of which 5.5GB is consumed by Windows 10, so I have approximately 9GB for PZ.

frail salmon
#

Interesting, I wonder if this would be due to you running out of RAM or the game..

#

Try going to the game install location and edit the ProjectZomboid64.json file

#

In there, change the -Xmx line to -Xmx8G

#

Save the file and launch the game again, then try rejoining?

fervent atlas
#

I have never had RAM problems with PZ, but when checking the task manager I see that I am consuming 90-95% of my memory, could this be due to the instability and lack of performance of the server?

#

this line?

fervent atlas
#

@frail salmon mmm with the modification of that line I have managed to decrease 3-5% of consumption but I have not seen much difference.

fleet tartan
#

Hey that's awesome

Can you join the server with your normal resolution with the mem tweak?

frail salmon
#

Just to see if the game itself was what ran out of memory

#

If not, then I have to assume the server just takes your total PC RAM regardless of the setting

fervent atlas
#

By doing some memory cleaning + modifying the .json I have achieved a 10% reduction I can play the game keeping my normal resolution at about 75fps stable but lowering the graphics. Officially I can now play. I appreciate your time and help, thank you very much for your attention.
