I can't think of a single part of the game that's inaccessible, though it becomes more cumbersome and intricate the deeper you go, or the number of interconnected systems you're trying to change.
Like N3na3 said, you could simply always keep the hunger bar full. You could remove the hunger system altogether-- after doing so, you could choose to remove food & water altogether, or choose to leave it in to provide an "action game"-style powerup.
As long as you're willing to go one step at a time and understand the larger picture as you go, there's very little stopping you from accomplishing whatever you want.

Was it the crafting rework or the animals? I assume animals but I feel like I'm always seeing one update or another about crafting, so I'm not really sure.

Sounds like this upcoming Thursdoid will be explaining about things related to animations, armors crafting, and more weapon stuffs. And then the next Thursdoid after that would be optimization stuffs or multiplayer stuffs. And then I can see them having either 1 or 2 more Thursdoid about polishing before Build 42 gets an ETA.
The animation -> optimization is more closer to modding support, by the way.
In terms of messaging, I would probably consider "bug fixes" not to necessarily be one of the pillars of their release. it's kind of a given, in a sense, and something they can do during unstable to a degree. So my best guess is that the remaining element is finishing up the crafting, other teams are working on bugs and animations (one offs in a way), and the MP team is always on MP

I don't see inventory of a couple dozen MP clients as a significant management task for a server, its likely just a list of item IDs for each client. I'd imagine constantly calculating pathing for a couple hundred zombies and animals in a given cell is probably more demanding

Probably not a place to discuss this. But I've learned from people who spend time on boats, roaches are attracted to the canned food paper labels.
So people usually rip them off and write the name of the food with a shaprie.

That's wild to think about though; I imagine you need to approach so many things differently when trying to survive isolated on a ship in the middle of the ocean for long periods of time.
Yeah could be fun to add something like rat poison / general pesticide to protect food. On the other hand, the devs don't want to turn the game into a "micro management simulator" which can be debated.
Then again, I'm one of the crazies that think bodily functions should be part of the game, and that's listed as a "hard no" on the website.

I get why people are against it. I just thought it'd be an interesting addition for when the water gets shut off. You'd sort of have to be careful where you do your business, otherwise you could risk getting sick. They already sort of have this with corpses. If you hang around corpses too much, your character gets sick and suddenly dies.
So I thought human waste wouldn't be such a giant leap. I think it could be done in a way where it's not intrusive. But I totally get why they're against it.
I don’t think it really adds anything, there’s no real nuance to it that determines or is determined by anything in particular.
It’s pretty insignificant and can be had waived as something your character does on their own without input
I think it adds some sort of looming, invisible danger though, like corpses. And would give another dimension maybe to how a base is planned.
So if you decided to stay in the city, you could maybe take advantage of existing pipes, but if you're in the woods, you'd have to figure out an outhouse or something.
The waste could be collected and used as fertilizer, or could cause disease like cholera if left to pile up.
Again, that's already been modded in 😛
Food spoilage from pests would absolutely make for interesting gameplay, whether it's included in vanilla or not-- having to consider whether the food is stored safely, off the ground, etc.
I know. I've seen mods for it, but haven't really tried them out, because if it's added as a mere "This bar fills/depletes, so perform [insert action] to reset bar".
Then yeah, I'd agree that would be pointless micromanaging for the sake of "realism". But like I've said above, it would be more intersting if there was a whole system behind it. Nothing too complex. Just a generic "get sick" if waste piles up, or can use it as fertilizer etc...
Yeah I'm on the fence about certain things. It's a game after all, so fun should be priority. So I understand why the devs would be hesitant to give official support towards anything that could severely steer the game into an unwanted direction/

I'd be totally for something like that. The balance would have to be right though, so the game doesn't revolve around it. Lots of mods mess that up, like that one "realistic hunger" one for Skyrim, where you basically have to eat a cheese wheel every couple of hundred steps.

I know this is like a build away, but human npcs is pretty interesting to think abt, like can you imagine living your whole play through for months in West Point, having a small group of npcs and then going to Louisville only to discover a whole commonwealth (walking dead shit) ah faction, that’d be sick.

Imagine you're struggling, barely finding any food, then you come across a small encampment that has lots of supplies...
There is a lot you can do with proper human NPCs. Lots of possibilities. Lots of modding potentials.
What I'm curious to know about is if we can do some hand-to-hand combat like simple fistfights (boxing) or kicking (MMA-style) when we encounter hostile human NPCs.
Or at the very least, just knock the player out, but still keep the player alive
I feel like with that anchor point system hand to hand is probably more likely
Making it so the game doesn't totally punish you just because you got knocked out clean by a human NPC is something I wanted to see Project Zomboid enhance in the combat mechanic.

I wanted the human NPCs do use Monte-Carlo Search Tree for decision-making, and NEAT genetic algorithm to let the human NPCs take actions more swiftly and with more automation.
Don't need to use proximal policy optimizations or reinforcement learning.
You can take a look at what the NPCs decision making might look like, Lemmy wrote a paper of AI behavioral trees in 2014
Obviously his knowledge has grown a ton since then, but it gives a general sense of what we might be looking at

The story has never been about misery but in all of the games it was a lot about grief or trauma, in the first game in the form of hope and the second one in the form of vengeance

There are plenty of points in the brutal misery. Bullet points, knife points, ect.
Obsessed with the idea of a character breaking into someone's house, with like a note reading like how they locked themselves in a room so they can't hurt anyone anymore, and the dude breaking into the room to hit the zombie with an RKO
I thought that's what grappling would go towards tbh, to be able to search someone or hug/brawl with them
Not to mention maybe a zed would be able to grab a hold of our bag and we'd have to let it go to escape (I may have already said this in the thread though)

It's wishful thinking but I hope the NPCs will be individual agents that can be modded from scratch, similar to how OpenTTD does it
That way you could mod in any character you'd like and each NPC would have a unique look and feel
But I'm more curious if we could set our characters on long running servers to go autopilot when we disconnect instead of them disappearing for everyone else

Generators can be used at all levels, but will be with low efficiency without magazines. And then after reading one, the player's efficiency increases greatly.

You can't use sandbox options in challenge runs, without mods of course.
If we wanted to a good out-of-the-box experience, then we need to make the changes in the base game to reflect that. Hopefully my suggestion can be considered, so that it addresses all types of players.

As someone in web dev, I always imagined I wouldn't like working on games because it would make one of my favorite hobbies and past times "work". While you're here, and to any other game devs in the channel, I am curious if you find this to be true. Do you enjoy playing other games, or do you find you "see through" some of the suspension of disbelief/immersive elements? Do you use video games to "escape" or is it too similar to your work to enjoy in that sense? Do you enjoy playing your own game beyond playtesting?

I have a friend that works in game dev so not quite the same but can comment a bit based on what he told me.
He doesn't really enjoy playing games much anymore. He is usually sick of being on a computer all day working on games so he doesn't wanna play them. Been leaning more into his other hobbies. I can occasionally get him to play something but not too often these days. Although he seems to have a soft spot for overwatch and he'll still play D&D and board games no problem.
He does still seem to keep up on news and enjoys talking about games though.
I felt like that when I first learned about how games are made but now I just appreciate the good ones more, because I know the time and effort that goes into them
I will say I have a lot less interest in playing story-based games, I need to play something I can listen to podcasts to while playing

Will PZ eventually remove floating structures being possible? eg. wooden floor bridges without support and player built structures with no staircase or bottom floor.
Feels like it could be an oversight if more content is being added to surviving long term. It is easy to make impenetrable bases by using exploits like those.
I'd like to see it but it would basically need some physics stuff, I'm told. Expect for now to be able to entirely destroy the bottom floor of a skyscraper and have it floating!

i just realized that GrappleZ could be used to make rideable horses
the grass is grassier than before
What one could do is by creating a Horse entity ( the animal ) they can create a GrappleZ animation where the player "grabs" in code the horse, playing an animation where it looks like the player infact mounts the horse. You could then use that to make it so that when the player "Jogs" the horse enters a canter, if they "sprint" the horse gallops using either a seperate set of numerical values to defer to the """players""" (horses) stamina and speed or modifying the players amount by Such and such which will make sense to tie it to the players stamina considering its also exhausting for a person to ride a horse hard, not just for the horse itself.

SO much is being added that it conceivably will feel like a new game, and a lot of elements will need to play off one another. Testing can only catch so much, so while a lot of balancing likely has already happened, there will be a huge focus on balance between the releases of unstable & stable build 42.
One major example I can think of, there's a lot of really OP "gamebreaking" strategies the devs are aware of at the moment, and those are being addressed to make sure the game balances risk & reward for the sake of !FUN!, like now tall chainlink fences will be able to be toppled over if enough zeds pile against them
Honestly I don't think smoker needs a nerf, because it contributes to the overall atmosphere. It was the 90s, everyone and their children were smoking
Plus, I dislike the notion of single player game balancing, and multiplayer games aren't hurting for the smoker meta all that much
What needs a rebalance is some of the more obnoxious skill grinds ie nimble
I certainly hope the concept of free points goes away, Hemophobic’s change was a step in the right direction
Outdoorsman is a key trait I’m holding out for, being able to just ignore illness, rain, and temperature for two points is insane
The simplest change would be to make smoking cause you to cough while doing it and have a random chance for about an in game hour afterwards, if smoker has to be nerfed
It is kind of free points but if they do make it more of a detriment you should be able to ‘quit’ similar to getting rid of the weight from overweight
Cigarettes in and of themselves are a strong tool for reducing stress and unhappiness, and nerfing them would also nerf snoker
Implementing quitting would be particularly difficult because unlike the weight traits, quitting smoking is as simple as not interacting with the cigarette to smoke it. With losing weight it's a process that involves enforcing a diet and regular exercise, especially considering the most common foods to find are things like chips and soda which kill your diet
One way to implement a downside while trying to quit is to implement a "Fiending" moodlet, representing a critical decrease in accuracy with weapons as well as in the speed of any actions one could interpret as using fine motor skills, since when smokers go without smoking for a long time they can get jitters

I think its fair to say at the time it was probably an accurate-ish date when lemmy posted it, but goalposts move, scope changes, things go wrong. That's exactly why they dont usually give release windows in the first place.
