That and we need a reason to have defensive barriers
Destructible defensive barriers!
Like "we could destroy a flimsy wooden barrier with a shotgun" kind of destruction.
Could also feed into the crafting system: needing to repair your walls and barriers after a combat encounter!
The devs also said that they want to balance combat between skill and stats.
I think the simplest way to accomplish that is to simply make it so that aiming closer to a target focuses on their head.
But what about melee combat? What should be done to fix that?
And regarding punching, how do we tell the game when we want to punch and when we want to shove? Do only humans get punched?
Should we have a non-lethal tackle, or will that be way too complicated?
Probably too complicated
And dangerous
I don’t think one would want to tackle a zed
I've been thinking about that, maybe have a modifier or toggle key that when held or pressed in the look around mode, toggles it to a different melee attack types, from shoves, to punches, etc
Well the game already has something like a condition system for different animations, like the knife
Something similar could probably be implemented for human vs human combat
But the problem is what if we want to shove the human?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Most likely there would just be some kind of dodging action and maybe the ability to block with a melee weapon. Cant see hand to hand combat getting much love. Not really sure how they can make PvP gunplay actually work but im excited to find out
I do like what state of decay did with their hand to hand though
Reminded me a bit of dead rising too.
Tbh if state of decay and PZ had a baby that would be like, the perfect zombie survival game
I think for this you will need gloves or fists, everything is fine with pvp, but you definitely don't want to beat the zeds with your bare hands
Hitting them on the body sounds ineffective, and if you hit them on the face, your fists will most likely be scratched and covered in their blood and saliva
Almost like being bitten, but not out of carelessness, but out of my own stupidity
Wrestling moves and kicks are where its at
Well.. some wrestling moves
Most would be risky af. Also silly like in DR lol
Oh yeah! Imagine if we could kick in the game!
Yes
Probably not this update maybe not the one after
But i see theres quite a high chance for some new ones
Imagine if gas siphoning speed was tied to the fitness skill, because the better your lungs, the better you siphon.
weird logic of PZ siphon gas
Not really a gun but they talked about to maybe exploe the possibility of a flamethrower in the future if i remember right
Its a firearm in a sence, so counts
We're gonna get flamethrower mods within the hour B42 drops if flamethrowers aren't implemented by then.
gas cans currently have some magical pumping ability to syphon gas until the hose get added to siphon gas.
you don't keep a hose coiled inside your gas cap? what a rookie move
Currently, fire and explosives feel underwhelming in the game. It would take a vfx overhaul for me to get excited about using a flamethrower
imagine hand grenades in PZ in build 42.
Fire is being reworked for b42
Well, we know fire effects and fire spread are getting reworked.
Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Thank you!
once fire starts it never goes out unless it rains and in the cell.
Yeah it’s pretty OP and also annoying
Doesn't it depend on the source?
e.g. a house fire can burn down the house, a fork in the microwave can burn down the entire world, a zombie on fire can get cached and effectively teleport offscreen all over the place and set random things on fire
Thrsdoid tomorrow?
sometimes they released on friday
damn
Nasko made it sound like there won’t be one this week
Expect the part where it breaks after five hits
spear is so easy to craft I mean
I was originally thinking, when looking at the new spear image, "sure, we can make dedicated spear heads, but that doesn't make the actual shaft any tougher than any other base spear," but then I realized: we're getting craftable higher-grade weapon parts, we we'll probably be able to craft wooden spear shafts with higher durability than normal spears!
To make the head, sure. The shaft probably the carpenter, and likely anybody for binding the two together, with the material you use for binding also affecting weapon durability.
Yeah it does seem like they want different professions doing different things
Which could be…..annoying
Mainly for single player anyway
I know they mentioned all of them would be available but
I'm curious how they'll balance it for a single player experience. Maybe an option to disable affinities?
I think that what was mentioned
Or you can have an affinity for one profession but not the others, yet you can still learn
Won’t know until it’s released
metal tipped spears excellent.
You can carry like 20
I think if they commit too hard to affinity you can just change the settings to increase XP gain in general to level faster
Yeah I think they confirms something will be available in the sandbox
Also perhaps if they're adding craftable objects there will also be lootable versions of it, like getting a spear head from a store for example, and you could focus on maintaining it if spears are your MO, since maintenance is far easier than construction from scratch
Hell there's a mod on the workshop called fire axe reforged, the entire point is reclaiming the valuable metal head of the fire axe when it breaks and replacing the renewable handle, importing spear heads opens the door for all that
And in singleplayer since you have all the loot in the world to yourself, there's less need for the ability to build from scratch for an individual
I think it’s been mentioned some of it could be lootsble
Ohhh. That sounds good! The devs could look into the viability of being able to reclaim parts of broken weapons. It could even be as simple as weapons breaking having a chance to spawn parts on the ground and have those parts have conditions similar to the weapon it came from. So if it's bloody, or a bit used, it'll be bloody and have some condition wear.
imagine crops in flower pots.
GARDENING POTS 🤩
It seems so simple in retrospect, but it makes perfect sense!
being able to carry your crops to help us transport our fresh vegtables.
Although, it could mean having to make new sprites for every plant that can grow in pots. I don't think they can re-use existing ones and just shift them up. The current set of the sprites for plants are for growing on a square tile.
So either new sprites for every plant, or every gardening pot is as big and square as an actual tile and just shifted up from where it would be from the ground.
That's one good reason to use pots! Being able to transport your crops!
And maybe pots would have more resistance to certain pests since they can't catch them from the ground
logic of carrying a bowl of water in backpack
water shutoff is a joke since there is still water in the pipes making water collector barrels useless unless they remove ability to get water from sinks , bath tubs and toilets.
well removing it from toilets would make zero sense lmao but i see ur point
water pipes going dry and not getting enough water to fill multiple water bottles.
i like using the mod “water becomes tainted” bcz water aint just gonna sit in pipes for months or years and be perfectly healthy
water “expires” irl so it makes sense
you could fill 20 water bottles from a bath tub after water goes out.
it would be nice if drinking from the toilets could make player sick.

devs could alleviate that by making water go stagnant
That and you’re barely going to get a cup of water from leftover water in a pipe, let alone enough to hand wash any clothes with. I’d prefer seeing pipe water reduced by 90% on top of going stale
Valid through and through
This shit always irks me 🤣
Ive said it before but im really hoping to be able to climb/land on parked cars. All the depth system improvements should make this possible
I hope they dont go overboard with zeds reactions to lights though. They should mostly be drawn to lights turning on/moving lights and not so much persistent light
There is a mod who make the water be tainted after 2 or 3 days; n game
I'm enjoying this conversation. Anyone who plays Zomboid knows that the game is actually easy, you'll die of boredom because there's nothing else to do (I love the game). We need these adjustments to make things more difficult and create problems for us to solve.
⬆️
So true, even the best survival gameloop can only sustain a player for so long. I feel like the radio in game could be an excellent way to present the player with interesting scenarios that come with risks and rewards. Things to do beyond survival
Some of the side scenarios you can play ought to be woven into the full sandbox/survival game mode. For example maybe you overhear about a tall building heavily infested with zeds but with special loot at the very top. When NPCs come into play random Dead Rising style psychos to take out could be fun. Maybe a Pyromaniac sets up at a gas station in Muld throwing mollies at anyone that comes near. Maybe a sniper locks down the main commercial street in West Point.
It's practically impossible to die of hunger or thirst; at no point do you need to plan to manage food or water. I play with the maximum number of zombies and the minimum amount of items, and still, resources are extremely abundant. I don't miss missions or NPCs; I just miss challenges. A new preset configuration beyond the apocalypse, a new mode where we will really have to think to survive.
With the addition of NPCs, there's an opportunity to rebalance the survival mechanics by introducing labor division, adding depth to the gameplay. The military conducting sweeps and aggressively eliminating threats (including survivors), and burning the bodies, could serve as a major early-game antagonist. As the game progresses, the threat could shift to raiders attacking your base.
Totally agree. All that stuff is gonna work out, even if mods have to drive parts of it home
I agree! But we know that NPCs will take an unimaginable amount of time. Before that, it would be good to have a balancing of difficulties.
We're not drinking from the bowl, we're drinking from the cistern!
its weird we could drink from these toilets that don't have the tank.
The player's character just puts its head into the toiler lmao
Never heard about drinking this way and not getting sick? smh
Oh wait nvm
People don't use toilets for anything other than drinking in PZ 🤣
im suprised we can drink from the showers.
nah, tbf the character may drink using hands
the animation of drinking from toilet seems to look like they are drinking from the bowl lol
Water should be more hard to get. Right now you will never run out of water
Don’t think that’s gonna change as long as rain collectors exist
At least you have to grind for rain collectors and they make sense... Kinda
Sinks, toilets and bathtubs having lots of drinkable water even after years makes zero sense and make water something you barely have to worry about
Reminds me of an old comment I read from a CataDDA thread in 2012..
"Treat all water as if it had come from a toilet left with a giant turd swimming in it. Yeah, you had better boil that water"
brings me back when I drank radioactive sewage water
I didnt even fucking mutate I just ended up dead 3 days later
Why should water be hard to find? You can filter water from a puddle through a cloth, boil it and drink it without any problems
Yeah rural Kentucky isn’t a dry arid desert
He's talking about when the water shuts off, there's still a lot of fresh water inside of pipes years after the apocalypse
Yes
is this tested
Maybe I’m mixing bald with bald spot
It shouldn’t stay clean in pipes 3 years after the water shut off
the point is you should have to filter and boil the water, not just drink from whatever is nearby
In the end that wouldn’t make a huge difference
Although it would probably make early game more challenging
They uh
They tend to do that
This is how you died.... a bald man
Cue ad read for whatever the latest antibaldness thing is
Is it still keeps? Are they still throwing out sponsorship
anyone remember if the devs said anywhere if they gonna add animations for the new stations like the character will beat with an hammer on the anvil?
Can zombie fluids help regrow hair? Somebody should test this theory.
4 more days until thursdoid arrives.
ohh great gods bless us with a IWBUMS build
What channel is that? It's showing as "unknown"
the knox event: a real time retelling
Ahhh
I mean it's been a hot minute since anything was added to the real time retelling anyways. I wonder if the devs moved that kind of writing effort into the main game already and if so, the account and the channel wasn't long for this world anyways
More accurately, I hope they moved that writing effort to the main game, radios could always do with more lines for immersion
that was already in the game
it was taken from the game radios and put into discord/twitter to retell it
Wait then what was the point of the Twitter account if it's in the game
Fun, promoting it to people whom have a Xitter account but don't have the game, etc
What is a xitter account?
Oh, i didnt know anybody actually called twitter x
i dont
No, it wasn't
Most of it was new, with only a couple in-game texts put into the mix so people know when the radio's at
Really? Wow
I just had an interesting idea: what if TV schedules were more randomized? Like, each world spawn will have a randomly generated TV schedule for shows that increase skills (currently, only Live & Living), much like how the frequency for the Automated Emergency Broadcast System is random per world generation, and there will exist in-game TV guides that can spawn in houses, especially those with TVs. The TV guides will tell you exactly what shows will be on TV, at what times, and what channels.
Bro beat me to it i was thinking about this earlier but didnt have time to yap. Tis a good idea
It would for sure shake up the daily routine in the first days
What about teletext? Couldn't you just view the schedule there?
and on top of that tv magazines have the schedule making them not so useless
Would be cool to have TV Magazines and read it to find outa bout the hours
copycat
lol
I guess teletext never caught on in the USA so you would have to scavenge for tv magazines
in a universe where zombies exist, teletext was never invented
and god set the world to superflat
I mean in real life, in Zomboid it might've though
The game can be quite idiosyncratic at times with British quirks
Man, was reading up on some of the planned features and saw they wanna add hills and valleys at some point.
I just hope it doesn't look weird and blocky. But the devs have figured out tougher problems so I'm optimistic they can tackle that.
Yeah, but first the have to implement stairs that go up south and east
Be funny to watch zeds struggle climbing up a steep incline and fall backwards.
The older SimCity games have some pretty good isometric hills and valleys if you want to see how it might look. North and west slopes would be an issue though like always
Ooo! Good suggestion. Guess it might look something like this.
Hopefully IndieStone can make it look a little smoother
Thanks to the new depth inference system they might be able to do it purely with shading and a few cleverly designed tiles, which could look a lot more convincing than these older methods
Oooo! That is a cool thought! I'm hoping once they overhaul the depth system future updates will come a bit quicker now that the hard stuff is done and they have a solid foundation to work with.
thursdoid tomorrow its going to be fun.
Can't wait! 😁
Definitely
My guess is that they have merged everything already.. and are doing internal testing
yipee
aaaaaaa
in thursdoid we trust
I just want to see an underground bunker
I’ll take you to one and you can live there permanently
Hiho when npcs update? It i remember i saw npc mod work quite nice 2 years ago?.. how much time dev team need to make something like that
I think i die before i see this 😦 sad but pz its rly nice concept of game. Hope for devs best, and hope no one will make similar game soon with quicker devs, it could kill pz :/
Build 43.
We have been waiting 2 years for Build 42, though, but we expect it to be dropped onto the Beta Release in early 2024. Expect a year or two after that for Build 43, where we'll get NPCs.
basements are going to be amazing and hopefully have more washing machine locations on the map.
its crazy how there is not many houses with washing machines unless its a 2 story home or luxurious.
Dish washers are a real rarity in KY.
too bad we cant use plates to put food on.
The amount of time the devs need to make something like that cant currently be measured or judged in such a way since they arent currently working on it. They are paving the way to NPCs with important system overhauls and expansions first.
It can't be just me to think this is age of empires 2
Thats Thursdoid with an announce for the Unstable Version soon
fingers crossed
fingers crossed also
42 is still months away, if you're waiting for a thursdoid to announce the unstable version, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.
just going through the world with a positive mindset and hoping for the best, more not 😉 - but with "still months away" i can live with it.
Perfect!
is there thusrdoid today
Months away is much better than years.
definitely
Yep yep!
Usually drops sometime after 1pm PST
I guess it will be either march or april
I won't fall for this misdirection. My hopes have quintupled.
Oh what do you know 🙄
i mean now that the game is in a 3d engine this may happen
maybe an early 2024 for build 42.
we only have 1 more thursdoid left in 2023 if its going to be another monthly blog post.
Ah. I was hoping for a Jan or Feb 2024 unstable release. But I guess now it can range from March to June, or even August...
But I might be able to live with that.
IWBUMS updates are fun.
Whose bum?
any hour from now and we will have a blog post.
does this mean that builds 43 onwards are years away?
Most likely
Bet they're gonna formally reveal the turkey for B42
I mean, yeah.
Does anyone else get immensely itchy waiting for their Thursdoid fix?
lemmy said that he is the ceo
I remember they said that there will never be another time gap between builds like the one between 41 and 42, but I don't remember when or where it was said... I might be wrong
guys, when is the goddamn thursdoid?
That would make sense considering the scale of the core system overhauls with B42. It should at least be a good while before they'll need to do something so drastic again
We all might die of old age waiting for it
worth it
Hope so
I think it's worth mentioning that the biggest part of 41 was the animation overhaul which had its work started all the way back even in 2015.
There were a whole two years between the last patch of 40 and Build 41 hitting the beta, and then B41 had basically a two year long beta cycle and continued to receive patches on stable for basically another year.
So B41 basically had three years of public patches, the longest of any build so far.
Just putting this in context could be important when we regurgitate them saying no build will ever take as long as Build 41 did
👍
anyway, what r u guys doing rn?
The devs are eating Turkey
well, maybe they are
that's not for us to judge them as long as they're adding metal spears
R u spying on them?
Most of the devs aren't from the US lol
может быть.
They only have 1 american dev dont they?
reading thursdoid is kind of the highlight of my week
It’s my highlight of the month
Come on man....this ain't funny no more...Where's my Thursdoid?!
*Hands tremble uncontrollably
🥹🥲
