The radio message struck you with a sudden sense of panic and realization. The newspaper headlines were right: something was happening.
**Welcome to Jefferson County, fall of 1993. **
Over the past few months, there has been a rabid escalation of excitement, then panic, around the world. After an amazing discovery was made by scientists on a geological survey in Antarctica, reports of a … fungus … claimed to hold the key to all cognitive disease. The new buzzword ‘nootropic’ was all the rage, and the origins of this mysterious mushroom were all that anyone could talk about. Family members, co-workers, and talk-show hosts argued over its origins and the implications it forced the world to consider. Some were even suggesting it was extraterrestrial.
Recently, rumors of some new illness started to spread. Fast. No one knew what, or how. But apparently, North Carolina and Tennessee were getting hit hard, so bad, that the National Guard was activated to begin constructing “Quarantine Zones”. The reports claimed it resembled some kind of rabies that caused its victims to become violent. There was even a report of Police Officers having to kill a victim who “left them no choice”.
Now, with the declaration of Martial Law, you knew something terrible was coming. The conspiracies of ‘government round up’ appeared to be warranted, as uniformed personnel began to forcibly escort people to their FEMA checkpoints. The chaos was unlike anything you had ever seen as the fabric of society was ripped out from underneath Kentucky.
