Dune is a good example. Book nerds (like me!) have long held that there are a lot of issues with the books.

Book 1: fine to read and leave alone and not read further.
Book2: Prequel to 3, so you need to read 3. Perfectly wrapped up and good ending.
Book 4: Weird stuff begins. All the wacky trippy stuff like romance with a worm. Sets up for Book 5.
Book 5 ends on an open-ended thing for the final battle leaving way too much unaswered. Like game of thrones, the final book was never written.
