Okay well even with that, we FULLY assess the ankle first. Does it hurt when we move it up and down? Or left and right? Does it hurt with both, all movement or at a certain angle only? Where is the position of comfort? If it's at an angle where it can't be rest flat, then it's likely going to hurt more since a hanging ankle isn't supported obviously and will pull down, causing more pain. Is the ankle actually broken or sprained? We visualize for redness, swelling, where is the swelling? How bad/protruded is it? Can the patient put weight on it?

There's a LOT that goes into a physical assessment that helps identify true pain figures
