I set mine to 8.
60 FPS in build 41 with 450+ mods and 10,000+ zeds on screen at once.
30 fps same scenario at 200% zoom.
10 fps at 500% zoom (full game render limit).
B42 same setup is typically triple the frames.

Setup Tips For Best Performance:
(These tips apply to PC in general so will help with all PC games)
DO NOT PLACE STEAM GAMES INSIDE “programs” or “programs 86”
Also: Place them on an SSD
The easiest option is to just make a folder on your C drive called “steam library” or “Video Games”. Then install your steam library there.
USE ETHERNET
This is a hard fact of Ethernet: It is 3 to 5 times FASTER than the fastest wi-fi possible. If you play games on a PC, get a physical ethernet connection and you will see DRAMATIC performance boosts to every single online game you play.
(for the tech heads: Ethernet can deliver 10 gb per second, to ALL devices, with zero interference from things like bad weather or Grandpa Willie watching NetFlix in the living room.
5G wi-fi can only deliver 3 gb per second, and is inconsistent from one second to the next. Aluminum in your walls, Other people using your wi-fi, or the cable car farting too hard can all mess up your wi-fi.)
If using an Ethernet cable is an option, use it.
PZ RAM IS STINKY: Increase Your RAM
(You WANT at least 8 GB installed on your PC, so you can use 4 GB for gaming)
1- Navigate to: Steam - Steam Apps - Common - Project Zomboid.
2- Right Click "ProjectZomboid64.json" and open with Notepad or text editor.
3- Find This Line:

4- Change the value after "Xmx to the amount of RAM you can set aside for the game.
4096 for 4 GB RAM (if your machine has 8-12, set it to this)
8192 for 8 GB RAM (if your machine has 16 or more, set it to this).
**Note: ** Too much RAM can actually be bad for performance. Don’t go above 8 GB as well as not over 50% of what is installed on your PC.
The settings can safely be changed at any time, so test what works best for you.

Not an issue with 100-300 zeds.

But if you are 30+ fps call it good.
