#Relatively recent MMO like BDO, Lost Ark, Elsword, Maplestory, DFO with a mid-high population.

Does anything like that exists? feel like I would know it by now if it did, but worth trying to ask.

All the games I mentioned have multiple common korean mmo features:
Multiple systems to progress in for character power
Potential to hard carry raids/bosses and clear maps very quickly
Enhancement systems or moderately luck-based gear progression
Lots of horizontal progression like life skills/professions, collectibles, etc.

I don't mind p2w or heavy grinds. Can also be a mobile game, but PC game is more preferable.

shell imp
#

how "recent" do you want the mmorpg you're looking for to be?

#

because there hasnt been much releases recently

#

the only "recent" one with relatively "decent" population is ashes of creation

#

with around 16k on steam as of this writing

#

there are also people playing outside of steam

indigo fable
shell imp
#

nothing post 2020s have a high enough population that would compare to long running mmorpgs (the examples you gave, bdo, ms, dfo alongside wow eso gw2 ff14 osrs)

jovial garden
#

TnL maybe?

shell imp
#

but since you like horizontal progression, i would suggest you try gw2 if you havent yet

shell imp
#

🤣

jovial garden
indigo fable
#

It doesn't have to be as big as wow or ff14, it can be moderatly sized. I just don't want to play in ghost towns and be able to trade with more players

jovial garden
#

if you like horizontal then gw2 is a good choice but its not vertical gear wise anyhow

#

it does have other systems for progressing ig

shell imp
#

wont be ghost towns since the game just came out

jovial garden
#

gonna be a ghost town in a month or two KEK

shell imp
#

every newly released mmorpg is going to have "ghost towns" in a month or two

#

some faster than others like blue protocol

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

dont think that you'll find anything like what ur looking for

indigo fable
#

I was thinking of PoE 2, but the seasonal stuff doesn't sound very compelling

shell imp
#

poe2 is an arpg

#

and you will only see people in hubs

#

its is very much not an mmorpg

#

and yes, there is only persistent progression in the non-seasonal realms

#

which are way behind in content

indigo fable
#

tbh lost ark elsword and dfo are also hub based

shell imp
#

yes but lost ark and the others you mentioned have some queue system

#

that can group you automatically

#

poe2

#

does not

indigo fable
#

hmm right

shell imp
#

you have to manually party with people

#

and most people want to solo in PoE2

#

cause co-oping sucks in arpgs

indigo fable
#

welp I'm setting my eyes on soulframe hopefully it turns out to be what I'm looking for

shell imp
#

unless you play casually with friends just chilling

indigo fable
#

ima try ashes of creation though

shell imp
#

ashes of creation is the closes to your criteria (at the moment) sans the boss and carries or whatever you do in korean mmorpgs

jovial garden
#

if you drop one or more of those criterias then you can definitely find something

shell imp
#

its more pvp/guild focused

indigo fable
shell imp
#

osrs

#

heh

jovial garden
#

wdym with multiple systems? multiple systems to directly make you more powerful or multiple systems in general?

shell imp
#

multiple aspects of your character to progress an to level

#

but yeah probably osrs will not be to your liking

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

ah well idrk any game then

shell imp
#

blue protocol has something like that

#

with enhancing and imagine summons (that are p2w)

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

catch up to what? there is no catching up

indigo fable
#

like leveling your skills to max

shell imp
#

most decent mmorpgs are straight forward and less of those convoluted systems and complex upgrades that are redundant

#

like look at gw2

#

you just have one thing to insert into your gear

#

and thats it

#

actually 2

jovial garden
#

u got relics as well ig

indigo fable
#

gw2 does sound nice on paper but ngl the graphics and the combat aren't my cup of tea

#

but then again I only leveled a bit in it, never made it to end game

shell imp
#

graphics is subjective, if you're used to korean slop where every female player character is a supermodel and every male player is either a kpop guy or a hunk

jovial garden
#

there is no "endgame" really

shell imp
#

and the graphics have shiny skin

jovial garden
#

just like any other horizontal mmo really

shell imp
#

and sometimes oversaturated

#

then yeah

#

gw2 will look bland

jovial garden
#

eh gw2 has similiar skins as well

#

it has bright skins n such

#

I like gw2 skins a lot but I still prefer lotro graphics wise

shell imp
indigo fable
#

it's hard to describe

shell imp
#

and i like to separate cash shop from "ingame"

jovial garden
indigo fable
#

I'd even say WoW graphics are great

jovial garden
#

there are plenty of them

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

and u can get anything in game anyways

#

also, just dye it another color

shell imp
#

but yeah you should give gw2 another try

#

as for combat, it's not bad and i know it's subjective but

#

to give it a fair chance, play the game without comparing it to bdo, maplestory, etc.

indigo fable
#

I mean I'll see, I do have to try endgame a bit before deciding to drop it off or not

shell imp
#

cause if you tend to compare tab target (including hybrid style tab) to action combat there's just no comparing

#

they each do things different, and both are great

jovial garden
shell imp
#

but if in your mind you are already like.. "ugh this is tab target i hate this.." then you will never like it

jovial garden
#

there is no "endgame" in horizontal mmos really

indigo fable
#

here's a question for gw2

#

once you get all your gear and stuff, does that mean everyone at that stage is equal in power

jovial garden
#

basically

#

unless you account for skill

indigo fable
#

can you still be that one hard carry in groups

jovial garden
#

yeah ig? depends on what you mean

shell imp
#

if you know the fight

#

and know the mechanics and how to dodge properly

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

the biggest difference will be in pvp/wvw

shell imp
#

you can carry fights and solo things

#

in terms of damage done, if you play on par with everyone else, no

jovial garden
#

also depends on build

shell imp
#

gear cannot carry you unlike in korean mmorpgs

jovial garden
#

gw2 is not a gear grind game

#

lvl cap is also not raised with expansions

#

you can get to level cap and then buy near bis gear for fairly cheap

shell imp
#

which is also the nice thing about gw2

#

you can take a break today

#

come back after a year

jovial garden
#

the only thing that requires better gear is fractals (a type of instanced content) and thats because you need agony infusions and u cant put that in all kinds of gear

shell imp
#

you will still be somewhat relevant

jovial garden
#

pvp doesnt even have gear to begin with, you just select stats and such

shell imp
#

maybe you need to change a few pcs of your gear but it wont take long

#

compare that to a korean mmorpg

#

take a break today

#

come back next year

#

you will be so behind

#

everyone else

jovial garden
#

ig gear matters a bit in wvw but you'll basically never lose/win due to gear difference

shell imp
#

lmao

jovial garden
#

its just skill/build difference

shell imp
indigo fable
#

what do you progress in after you complete every horizontal stuff and get your bis gear thonk

shell imp
#

gw2 there is no carrot on a stick to chase

#

you have complete freedom

#

there's a lot to do

shell imp
#

to collect and to achieve

jovial garden
#

it'll take some time for a new player to get bis, especially if u want leggies

#

if u wanna get full leggies then thats gonna take a while as well

#

but really just do whatever you want, collections, achievements, masteries

shell imp
#

getting legendaries can be a "goal" to point you towards something to do

#

i see them more as a convenience

jovial garden
#

its not like ur going to run out of 14 years of content in a month lol

shell imp
#

rather than a requirement for best in slot

#

since you get the same stats with ascended

jovial garden
#

yeah leggies dont offer any stat increase

#

just qol

indigo fable
#

is the progression grindy or time gated

jovial garden
#

neither really

#

there arent many time gates in general

#

the only timegates that I can think of rq is raid leggies that needs weekly clears for a few weeks, wvw leggies that need tickets which are weekly capped and skyscale but you can get that in like 3 days so thats kinda whatever ig

shell imp
#

time gates that are very restrictive are only in korean and chinese games

#

most western games are weekly based

jovial garden
#

some mats are time gated as well but you can just buy those, they are time gated to give them value

shell imp
#

wow and ff14 (i consider ff14 western) are only "limited" by the weekly reset

#

for example

indigo fable
#

I'll try it again and see if it can scratch that progression itch

#

Where should I look for builds

shell imp
#

i'd say

#

enjoy the game first

jovial garden
#

nowhere

shell imp
#

before you think of builds

#

you can never go wrong with gw2 as you can always reassign

#

your talent tree

jovial garden
#

just use whatever you enjoy, you dont need builds for anything other than fractals/raids really

shell imp
#

the game wont punish you for making "a wrong decision"

jovial garden
#

you cant even use those builds while leveling anyways

shell imp
#

where in some games, say ragnarok online, if you misplace that stat point into something useless for your class/build, then you have to pay the cash shop for a stat reset token

jovial garden
#

if you have a boost dont use it

shell imp
#

tldr just have fun first, when you get to trying max level content then maybe revisit looking at builds

indigo fable
jovial garden
#

everything is played

#

just play whatever looks fun

shell imp
#

"play what you want"

jovial garden
#

making alts is easy later on anyways

shell imp
#

especially in pve

jovial garden
#

even more especially in pvp because you dont even need to level a char for pvp

shell imp
#

pvp you might see some classes more than others but eh it still doesnt matter

jovial garden
#

and before you start looking at benchmarks, take them all with a grain of salt, most of them cant hit their actual benchmark dps in content

shell imp
jovial garden
#

ya

shell imp
#

and it's not just gw2, it happens in wow, eso, and even ff14 where most classes are homogenised

indigo fable
#

I'm looking at classes and their weapons, and for example I see warriors, thieves and revenants being able to use one handed swords

#

all three classes look compelling to me

jovial garden
jovial garden
#

your first 5 abilities are based on ur weapon, you either use a two handed which gives u 5 abilities or a main hand for ur first 3 and an off hand for ur 4-5

#

and u can weapon switch between 2 sets

indigo fable
#

great sword and dual sword revenant looking good ngl
