I am looking for a mmorpg to play. I have been reading online, searching for suggestions but I cannot come to a decision. Can anyone assist me?

I am looking for a MMO that is:
1)Not P2W
2)Has an active an accepting community. People that can and will be willing to join me and help me do quests rather than just saying "do that" "do this"
3)Can offer me hours and hours of fun content
4)has an interesting storyline
5)I do not mind a subscription, but a game where I can actually have fun without having to pay for a subscription or buying expansions.

I have heard great things about WoW, but it apparently does not have a proper story and the progress is too easy and stuff. I have looked at final fantasy online and couldn't find and negative comments.

I do not know if final fantasy online would be my style or not, and I would like some suggestions before trying it out and finding out if I become addicted or not.

I have played ESO a bit, but it sometimes feels really blank if you get what I mean? Like I have no idea what to do, when I ask people what I should do, they tell me to do random quests. I mean that is fun and all, but I still have no idea what my end goal is.

I have played Warframe for more than a thousand hours, I absolutely love the community, the content, the missions, everything about it. But I had a massive burn out over the years and I want to experience something new. If there is a MMO that is really active and matches Warframe s standards I would be more than happy to give it a shot.

Right now I am thinking between WoW and FFXIV. Any suggestions would be appreciated

if you liked warframe, you might want to check out the First Descendant. when i played on one of the betas they had it was pretty much a mash up of warframe+destiny2+division 2 or something. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2074920/The_First_Descendant/

i can recommend either. ff14 has a free trial (unlimited time, up to level 70-maxlevel currently is 90-includes all content at 70 and below = basegame+2expansions)

#

nothing to lose since it's "free"-to-try

#

wow technically has a free trial as well but it's only up until lvl 20, current max level as of dragonflight is lvl 70

Cause when I was drawn into ESO, I read so much about it being free and having hundreds of hours of free content. But even though it does, I cannot find people doing dungeons and activities in the starter regions. All I can do it random side quests

fringe vessel
#

as long as you remain free trial you do not have to pay any sub. free trial has restrictions though: you cannot shout chat, you cannot create party but you can be invited into one, you cannot join guilds, you cannot priv. message., no marketboard etc.

#

it's to combat bot accounts and what not. the restrictions arent too bad compared to something like SWTOR's lmao

stark stirrup
#

With the subscription do you get EVERYTHING, or is it like eso where you get some older stuff?

fringe vessel
#

you might get confused with "how to buy FF14"

stark stirrup
#

Wdym?

fringe vessel
#

starter edition = same as free trial, except no restrictions and you need to pay for the sub after the free 30 days

#

complete edition = starter edition + latest expansion. everything is unlocked the whole game, all content, everything

#

if you bought the starter edition, for the purposes of just removing restrictions because they annoy you, you only need to buy the latest expansion to continue doing content and story after lvl 70

#

you dont buy this and that expansion in ff14, they only sell the latest one and that one unlocks everything that isnt free trial

#

and as with everything once you buy, you get 30 days free with the cdkey and then after that you need to pay sub

stark stirrup
#

I see

#

I understand what you mean by I might get confused

#

Do the expansions have a good story?

#

I played 2 expansion on ESO, and I really liked the story they offered, but they are only single player so that annoys me

fringe vessel
#

that is subjective, if you ask around in the ff14 reddit, people will say "expansion 1 and expansion 3 has the best story ever"

#

honestly i dont like the 1st expansion that much since it's about dragons and shit and im not a fan of that

#

not many like the 2nd expansion because it's split into 2 stories and they just dont like being "working behind the scenes" instead of being "the big hero"

#

but i like the 2nd expansion

#

especially since half of it is set in the eastern lands (asia/japan/china themed)

stark stirrup
#

1st one sounds cool to me. I am a basic fantasy lover XD

fringe vessel
#

generally expansion 3 is great and i agree with it. as well as the 4th (latest one) is very very good and wraps up the story that began in the base game.

stark stirrup
#

When I see dragons my mind says "cool"

fringe vessel
#

expansion 5 coming in july 2 is out soon and will be a new chapter in the story

#

new arc in a light novel/manga if you must say

stark stirrup
#

And for example how much do these expansions offer? Like how many hours of content?

stark stirrup
fringe vessel
#

you have about 300 to 400hours of story to burn thru from the base game until expansion 4

#

and that does not include the hours you'll spend on side content

stark stirrup
#

That's good

fringe vessel
#

and dungeons/boss fights/etc.

fringe vessel
stark stirrup
#

Is it like eso where people only play the latest content, then leave the game for a year or 2 until a new dlc releases? Or do people play all?

stark stirrup
#

The free trials I have played before are usually just for tutorials and a few missions before it asks for your sould

fringe vessel
# stark stirrup Is it like eso where people only play the latest content, then leave the game fo...

that's a bit of a mix for ff14. if you're doing the main story from the very beginning, you will at most encounter 2 or 3 people questing with you. since the base game content has been out since 2013. the game has a roulette system though which encourages and seeds (your queue) veterans and current players to any dungeons in need from lvl 15 (the first dungeon) until level 90 (the current endgame dungeons)

#

the roulette system also exists for trials (boss fight instances), raids (easy mode) and other content

#

and players at endgame are rewarded their weekly currency for doing these roulettes

#

so besides the main story, the game will feel very populated when you're "doing content"

stark stirrup
#

I see. But overall, I should be able to find people, from what I understand

#

Cause I was beyond frustrated when I played ESO and I found literally 0 people in the free content regions. Finding even one random dungeon took hours

fringe vessel
#

yes. it's only main story where you will see that it's mostly just you. cause everyone is either doing the latest expansion or just chilling in one of the 3 starter cities

stark stirrup
#

I am glad to hear that

#

And how is the community? Are they toxic or will I be able to find people that are helpful?

fringe vessel
#

no mmorpg is free of toxicity. i've seen toxic people in ff14 but that's mostly confined to the very hard raids where you need coordination and a lot of studying for the fight

#

as a new player though, it's pretty much one of the most friendly communities

#

on par with guild wars 2

stark stirrup
#

That's great to hear

stark stirrup
#

Also about WoW. I installed the launcher than found out that you can only try the free trial until level 20 and apparently getting to lvl 20 is very simple so I did not download it and started watching vids and stuff. So could you also tell me a bit about wow?

fringe vessel
#

wow's free trial like you said is only up to lvl 20

stark stirrup
#

WoW has been a game I have heard all my life but never had the chance to get into. So I have always wanted to give it a shot.

fringe vessel
#

and you can do all content except shadowlands and dragonflight (this might change when the war within comes out)

stark stirrup
#

Is this for classic or retail?

fringe vessel
#

retail

#

there is no free trial for classic.

stark stirrup
#

Ah no?

fringe vessel
#

all you have to do for classic is subscribe (you dont need to buy any game, just throw battle net a wow sub and you can start playing wow clssic)

stark stirrup
#

Which one is better and more suited for a newbie?

fringe vessel
#

i'd say both. wow classic will be similar to your classic old RPG journey where you are dropped into the world with an npc in front of you and you can start a quest from there or just run out into the wild and do whatever

stark stirrup
#

Cause like even tho I have quite a lot of time in Warframe, it is not s traditional MMO. And I do have around 200 hours in ESO but that is mainly doing dlc's and random missions. I never really did anything else. So I am really not familiar with mmo's all that well

fringe vessel
#

wow retail you start on a boat and you have to go thru a tutorial zone and mission

#

wow retail holds your hand more i would say

stark stirrup
#

Which one is more active? And I am guessing wow classic would be hella toxic and unwelcoming for new players?

fringe vessel
#

wow classic you will be left to your own devices and you might have to google and wiki your way on this and that

fringe vessel
#

as for "active" that's an issue with wow right now

fringe vessel
#

every since they introduced classic wow, SoD, classic hardcore

#

the player base has been fragmented

#

and split into 4 versions of wow

#

that's not to say all 4 are empty. there's lots of people playing wow

#

its one of the top 5 mmorpgs if you're counting players online but they're all split into different versions of the same game

stark stirrup
#

Uhuh

#

So, which one would you recommend for me?

fringe vessel
#

retail since it has a free trial

stark stirrup
#

Ff or wow?

fringe vessel
#

and you can get a feel of wow

#

or ff14 trial

#

i mean try both

#

they're both "free" to try

#

nothing to lose except time

#

time you waited to download

stark stirrup
stark stirrup
#

The issues is my internet speed used to be around 500-600

#

But there was like a crash last year

#

And I hardly get anything

#

I downloaded a 70 gb game a few days ago and it took 8 hours....

#

So I do wanna try them, but it is quite a hassle right now...

fringe vessel
#

that depends on your internet provider and the line going to the server you are downloading from

stark stirrup
#

It is an issue with my internet provider

#

Cause everything is like that, hella slow

fringe vessel
#

you may download 70gb for 8 hours from steam's servers for example but downloading a movie from a server in your locale/area/city might take only 10minutes

stark stirrup
#

Unfortunately not

fringe vessel
#

because the line going there is "great"

stark stirrup
#

Friends in my area that are using my provider have also experienced the same issues and they are not fixing it

fringe vessel
#

the only thing i can suggest for that is, cancel your internet subscription and apply for a new one on one of the other providers in your area

stark stirrup
#

I will be moving out in a month and a half, so I will have to anyway

#

I am applying to uni and this is my last summer vacation where I get to enjoy games for a while

#

But I will try downloading and testing both out

#

You have been incredibly helpful, so thank you so much for your time

fringe vessel
#

yeah try them both out. and do go check out the first descendant as well goodluck with uni!

If you want a niche MMORPG that is not a AAA game, you can try our In house Game Dev Project:

sure but i (more so) recommend checking out our wow and ff channels in this discord #final-fantasy-xiv #world-of-warcraft we have plenty of activity there as well and you can instead ask there so more ppl can see it and help you with either game
