I think we can have a higher level of customization if separate the engine from the prop, and make each have more variant (piston engine or turbine).

we could have different types of engines (turbine/piston (different types of each obviously)) and then they could drive various types of stuff, like driveshafts, transmissions, and props

One problem with all of this new stuff is it makes it harder to build something other than the parts, like replicas. If we have, for example, a detailed and realistically sized engine model, and we want to make a different engine for a replica, we still have to manually make our engine. Same for landing gear, engines, and pretty much everything.
