it's not really that, it's the fact that:

1. image models can make more money than text, so big companies like bytedance keep theirs closed
2. beating openai, google, etc. in llm is more important to chinese companies than making image models
3. training is a bit expensive, so they tend to make smaller models (which is good for us since that means we can run them locally)
4. the companies that tend to make image models also make video models and they don't want to open up either to boost their own platforms (minimax, kling, etc.)
