A more affordable alternative to actual pipes are pump organ reeds. They could have their pitch set with a slider instead of adding more of them. This could make some more temporary organs more compact. They should be cheaper than normal pipes but will play softer and only with one sound.

Had the idea to make reed banks, directional block, crafted with brass plate, planks and one organ pipe of the type you want.
With 2 sliders, 1 for the right, other left for directional redstone. Don't know how hard that is...
Or crafted the same way as the pipes, but instead of that copper thing it's brass plate and plank or reed box item

If possible, yes. otherwise just 1 reed/block

I mean, there are some directional redstone blocks, even in create, not just vanilla. I just have no clue how bigbrain the code for that is…

and then I thought about the faces on the pipes and thought "wouldn't it be cool if reed bank blocks had 2 faces, like Janus from Roman myth?"
and because that's compacter but seems at least somewhat managable to create
