So I got to that quest, son is clearly ill, so I send him to quarantine along with one other guy. The next day, the son has already turned into a zombie (and killed the other guy), so when the father shows up, his dialog is like, "Oh my son is infected, can I sit with him until he turns?" And I'm thinking, no, because you son has ALREADY turned and is in the cage. With no way to let the man sit beside the cage, I send him to the camp. Well, apparently the father tried to "get to him in the night" and was shot infront of the son. The problem? The son had been extracted as a zombie the night before and wasn't even there. And now I have this quest indicator that the son never got to see his father and died alone, and I'm like, yeah, because he father wasn't even to the check point by the time you turned. I suspect this all started because for some unknown reason, the son turned in one night rather than two. But now I have quest markers that can never be completed.

I'll be honest, I had no idea what this quest was "wait and see what happens" for what? FOR WHAT?!
I didnt have the slightest clue what I was waiting for until dad showed up asking to be put in quarantine with his son who already passed thru .
Well buddy theres no one in quarantine so your baby boy is already dead. He got sent to evac and I failed the quest. Idk if major whats his face was supposed to explain the quest PRIOR to doing the days checkpoint or what but massive L of a quest imo
Yeah the same thing happened to me
The son turned for me and was in the cage at the lab, it told me to talk to the father in the morning but there was no option to, so I failed the quest ; - ; Simple fix, devs just need to make sure they come through the checkpoint on the same day. So annoying to fail quests at no fault of the player!
Same issue here
Similar issue, father arrived after son had already turned, but for me the quests said something down the line of "father was sad because he couldn't see his son again who had to die sad and alone"
same here
Also found a bug that quest will not progress if you send the son to the lab holding him in limbo
I can see this thread was marked as Dev Noted, but if you go to the search engine (for the Server, NOT for threads) and use the keyword burden, there are several other people who asked around about this, with scant answers
#❓︱game-help message This appears to be the most concrete one
Personally, I liquidated the son, since he was clearly infected. When the father showed up the next day, I got the option to tell him about what happened to his son. He gets angry, tries to attack me, and the guards introduce him to the business end of their assault weapons after he a got hit on me. Interesting to know that, though bugged, there are other ways to potentially go through this quest.
Thought I would give some additional context and videos of this.
Game Version: 1.0.7.1323
Platform: Steam
Bug Description: Son is infected, sent to quarantine. The day after, the father shows up and wants to sit with his son. The son has already turned into a Zombie even though he was only in there one night.
- If you haven't killed the son, the father can go to survivor block and waits.
- If you have killed his son, he gets aggressive. ✅ (completes the quest)
How can the bug be re-created: Just get to day 14, if the son is sick, put him in quarantine (if you know who the son is), then on day 15 the dad arrives and the son is turned.
I have played through this 3 times and every time the son is sick so I send him to quarantine and the next day he has turned and the father shows up one day late.
Additional notes about the bug: The dialogue mentions the son having blond hair and a black jacket. In my playthrough he has different clothing every time.
Because the son has already turned, the quarantine will be occupied and you will not be able to keep suspected individuals there. You either have to keep him there and risk infected coming through the quarantine that needed it, or put him in the cage IF you have space (which will break the quest) or kill him which will break the quest if you do it after you sent the dad to the survivor block.
Sending the son to liquidation on day 14 will result in the dad being hostile but finishing the quest ✅.
Dialogue does not match most of the time due to how this quest comes about.
Day 15 Dad is told the son is infected when he has already turned into a zombie.
The son gets killed on day 15 to clear out quarantine and because he is a zombie. If you keep the dad during evac, he will try to get into the quarantine (which no longer holds his son) and gets killed, but dialogue suggests that the son is still alive and not turned. "The son never saw his father and died alone."

So…to me, it appears that a few simple adjustments can solve all these problems.
- When the son shows up, make sure he only has orange symptoms, so that most players will send him to quarantine. This of course does not stop players from liquidating the son right away due to foreknowledge or perhaps using the syringe to firmly establish his infected status, but such an event is already properly handled.
- Overnight, the son should not turn into a zombie, but script him to develop one red symptom that firmly establishes he’s really infected. I think something like Red Eyes would be excellent for this purpose, so I’ll use it for the sake of this example.
- Prompt the player to check on the son first in the quarantine before starting the day. Once the player has marked off the Red Eyes, explicitly inform the player via the quest dialogue box that they can now choose to liquidate the son immediately or wait for the father to show up.
- The father shows up in the queue as usual, but since the player character now either had the son either killed, or alive in quarantine but with the knowledge he is definitely infected, the existing dialogue with the father will make so much more sense.
- To make things more ethically/socially more challenging for the player, the father should be scripted to never be infected, if that isn’t already the case.
There could also be some dialogue from the son to stop people from liquidating him right away. like "have you seen my dad? we were supposed to meet up here"
Make the dialogue stand out from the "my kids went through here yesterday" etc
There’s only so much prompting from the game that one can do. The very fact that a quest is very clearly started should be a big enough clue for most folks. But players are going to do their own thing regardless.
For example, take my case: When I first played through it, I happened to still have a syringe with me and used it on the son. Despite knowing it must be a special quest at all, I was more concerned with following the rules, and took a pragmatic “Sorry, buddy, but rules are rules” approach. So I liquidated him. Needless to say, the father attempted to punch me out the next day, but the guards took care of that.
The quest doesnt start until day 15. The day after you have done whatever with the son. So for new players there is no indication that he is a quest subject
Doesn't the quest dialogue and indicator for the Father's Burden appear in the lower left corner of the screen as soon as the son finishes his initial speech to you?
No. It starts when day 15 starts. Haven't gotten a single quest regarding the son. Ever. And I've done it now about 6 times
Father's burden initiates on day 15, already in the bottom left. It says "wait and see how events unfold". Then the son is turned and the father shows up
Hmm...interesting. I could have sworn there was an earlier dialogue box that asks the player to examine the son for symptoms and decide what to do with him prior to sending him to quarantine. Unfortunately, I don't have a saved Campaign game anywhere close to Day 14 to verify that right now. If the quest now starts on Day 15 instead of Day 14, and the first objective is to "wait and see", then perhaps things have changed a bit.
Welcome to Quarantine Zone. Here, we do our best to spot people who try to slip through the quarantine, even though they are infected!
Hope you enjoy.
Here is one of my playthroughs and it should start where I wanted it. It should start in front of the quarantine. The first person after that, is the son
No quest shows up, he doesn't say anything either
They might have changed it. I'm just saying that at the moment, this is what it looks like :)
That link requires me to sign in to Google to watch YouTube. I always use YouTube anonymously so I guess I can't see the video. I'll take your word for it.
You are saying that you get no quest marker, nor does the son give any special dialogue on the initial meeting?
Ah. I set the video to 18+ since Blood and violence that's why.
Yeah no quest when he shows up and none show up until the next day. And he shows up with no dialogue.
My only interaction with this quest was the father coming in, the quest popping, and having to kill him because he got aggressive (I did not know his son was a thing and probably already had a zombie in the cage which is why I killed him)
I was super confused as to what was supposed to have been going on
yeah if you kill the son because he is a zombie/infected then you get the option to "press E to tell the dad what happened to his son" and he will get aggressive and attack you. but that is the only way to successfully clear the quest that I have found at the moment
not killing the son and putting the dad in survivor block will break the dialogue as if the son is still alive etc. and make the quest stay for the entire day 16
Well, I definitely got a quest notification on Day 14 when encountering the son -- note the dialogue box on the bottom left of the screen. If it was gone before, then maybe the latest patch fixed it. The patch notes did mention they touched this quest somehow. We shall see if he survives more than 1 day in quarantine, though a quick syringe check proves he's definitely still infected.
huh. interesting. Yeah they mentioned a bulletin quest so I didnt think it was this quest
But if they fixed it, amazing
Man how did this get so many replies when my soft lock bug from yesterday still has none 😆
probably because the quest affects everyone universally xD. also am chatty :P
Whelp, my gaming laptop is bricked, so I guess I won’t be playing for a while! It’ll probably fall to someone else to determine whether or not the Father’s Burden is still bugged or not.
i played it after the update and i can confirm that once in quarantine, the son didnt change for me so i was able to have father and son reunited for the last time
