#Want mechs? Pay monie

So, I'll be honest, most of the funds are going to go to spriters who will make most of, if not all the graphical things.

As such, each mech will only cost 20-40, codewise. I do have several categories I'd like to keep them in (for balancing reasons)

S1 Mech: 1x1 tile sized mechs, mainly for boarding and such. Think exosuits.

S2 Mech: 2x2 tile sized mechs, mainly for dogfighting and such. Think space fighters.

S3 Mech: 3x3 tile sized mechs, mainly for bombing ships and such. Think space bombers.

For SPRITES, it might cost 40-80 dollars, as I'd need sprites for in construction as well, but you might be able to source a good spriter or provide said sprites.

spriter here

Return to the suffering of Monolith. I offer $100 to split between the coder/spriter for the return of more tank/mech content

idle prism
#

coding mechs is trivial

#

it's just yml

#

like $5 worth of work for experienced coders

tawny rampart
#

I don't know how any of this works, but I also would like more mechs. I can send $400.

cinder raven
#

Oh shit

cinder raven
cinder raven
#

But with 2 sprite sheets I managed to have 6 different variants each with their own roles

#

Again, gotta get the account sorted and need to find a sprites

Prob gonna go to @proper quartz since they do incredible sprites

proper quartz
#

shyivy shouted first

#

up 2 you though

cinder raven
#

I mean yeah, but I've worked with you before

You do good stuff

#

Again I'm sorting stuff out so it'll take time

proper quartz
#

my current queue is some monke stuff and then whatever starch wanted and then im free as a bumblebee

#

kay kayyyyy

#

dont forget i got some rsis for other vehicles you can steal for free sitting on my repo if you want them (they use your code anyway)

cinder raven
#

It's funny someone came here going "ERM ITS WORTH 5 DOLLARS ONLY...."

#

Like there isn't testing or anything

proper quartz
#

maybe bro just want armored core server

#

cant blame him

cinder raven
#

I just wanna be paid minimum wage dawg

#

1 hour of work = 1 hour minimum wage where I live

#

I'm a little hesitant to go back into it

#

I don't wanna deal with the maints again

proper quartz
#

u do u my liege

cinder raven
#

Yee

cinder raven

cinder raven
#

Oh good shit

#

And you're good

bleak heart
#

Dude just shits on your work and leaves

cinder raven
#

Like I get it's not a lot of work, for actual coders

But it's like how spriting is easy for spriters, but you still pay them for their time

proud widget
#

thanks!

cinder raven
#

I think 20 bucks for 3 variants of 1 mech sprite is decent

proud widget
#

:3

cinder raven
#

Coding wise

#

Ah well, ill let you know when my bank shit is sorted

proud widget
#

i can get to spriting rn @cinder raven @tawny rampart

proper quartz
#

@proud widget if you need help or advice let me know, the fat mechs ingame already were made by me so I'll happily give pointers

proud widget
#

or spriter

cinder raven
tawny rampart
proud widget
#

@cinder raven how will we split the money?

idle prism
#

spriting costing a lot is fair

cinder raven
# idle prism i mentioned specifically the coding

Well I mean yeah, anything's worth pocket change when you throw it together haphazardly and throw it out without testing, nor consulting your clients on what exactly what they want

I get it's just YAML, and if you want to be paid 5 bucks for working on mechs, by all means, offer your services to people here

idle prism
#

unless you plan to add new weapons it's ctrl+c ctrl+v an existing mech then change the sprite paths and the stats

#

and done

#

there's nothing you can throw together haphazardly and nothing that can be reasonably tested outside of real games

#

unless you're a newer contrib so it'd take you more time than i estimated then it's more fair cost-per-time-wise

#

but your asked-for cost is yours to choose so

proper quartz
#

If you don't charge people til the work is done and also be clear about your charge up front, then there's literally no reason to yammer about anybodys prices. People pay who and what they want at the end of the day.

idle prism
#

i didn't suggest changing the price did i

#

why are we even arguing over nothing

proper quartz
#

My question exactly lmao

idle prism
#

i just mentioned that he's probably overestimating the workload

#

that was the intent

cinder raven
# idle prism i just mentioned that he's probably overestimating the workload

Well, let me break it down for you

From experience with the last mecha project (i did for free here), the yaml coding only took what, 20 min at most? But then there were missing C# features that I was helped with (I can do it myself now), which took quite a bit longer, so lets say thats 1-2 hours

Then there's the testing, testing every step of the way to make sure things worked properly, say 1 hour minimum

Then there's the support after it's been implemented, because people will find that exploits, so that's a little more time to work through

You're right, the coding is easy, just copy paste and change variables, but you neglect the other things that come in. People don't want the code, people want stuff that works

At minimum, you're looking at 2-3 hours of work, would you want to be paid 5 dollars for that?

idle prism
#

if it needs C# then $20 is fair and maybe too little sometimes

#

but most mechs shouldn't need C#

cinder raven
#

It doesn't matter if it needs C# or not

You're working for a client, who has specifications that they want

#

It isn't just "make anything you want"

#

Surely you've worked in a professional setting before right?

idle prism
#

if you include the time taken in the back-and-forth then sure

#

uni so not yet

cinder raven
#

Well, in uni, you'll learn all about what goes into projects, and why making software is in fact expensive as hell.

#

20 bucks for not just the code, but support after it's done, and changes mid project? I think is a more than fair deal, considering everything that comes with it.

idle prism
#

depending on scope there might not really even be anything to give support about

#

but if it's anything that needs C# then fair

#

also did you know about yml hotreload

cinder raven
idle prism
#

compile as Tools then just change and save the yml

cinder raven
idle prism
#

and it works

#

don't compile debug

cinder raven
#

i am very aware

#

Don't undervalue yourself dude

proud widget
#

@cinder raven hey so when am i paid and what job do i do

cinder raven
proud widget
#

for the canvas

cinder raven
#

And its all depending on what the clients want

proud widget
#

yeahhh i see i see

#

well

#

who's our client

cinder raven
#

they can just buy sprites from you

#

@bleak heart @tawny rampart

proud widget
#

ohhh

#

from

cinder raven
#

shhh

#

didnt see that typo

#

might need more weapon sprites, but we'll see

#

Again I don't exactly know what they want since they want mechs but

haven't said what kind

proud widget
#

alr so @tawny rampart said they're going to pay 400 right? and @bleak heart nothing yet as far as I know

#

@cinder raven how do we take it, 50 50?

cinder raven
#

def not 50 50

#

the spriting is gonna take you a while

#

so you charge what you need for the sprites

#

i take 20 per sprite, as I'll make several variants of one mech

#

so basically cost of sprite + 20 for coding 3 different mechs from it

bleak heart
proud widget
#

sorry

proud widget
cinder raven
#

well you're the artist, im not going to screech "ITS ONLY WORTH 10 DOLLARS" for the whole enchilada

proud widget
cinder raven
#

Mhm!

#

So, once again, it's up to what exactly they want

tawny rampart
#

Well, I will throw this out there. $80 per sprite. They need three sprites, so a total of $240. As far as design, I am more for classic mechs( big boxy, heavy looking), less so for the more Gundam style. But in the end, I guess it also needs to fit the theme of the game.

proud widget
tawny rampart
proud widget
#

i could do new modules/weapons and stuff yeah, i can do them for cheaper if they're more

tawny rampart
#

If @cinder raven ends up needing more, then I am open to getting more sprites for weapons and things.

cinder raven
bleak heart
#

Also what size are they gonna be

proud widget
cinder raven
bleak heart
#

I'm excited for the ground combat stuff you had cooking. But I wouldn't be opposed to some more 1 tile size mechs

#

Or those 2x2 that never got put in

tawny rampart
#

How about one for each size?

cinder raven
# tawny rampart How about one for each size?

For each size of mech? That can be done. Again, most resources? Spriter resoruces. But replacing the ground mech with a proper tankette would be pretty cool.

something small enough to fit in small-ish hallways or for ground missions

#

@proud widget I'll be available to discuss what's needed for each things in DMs soon enough

#

then we can figure out the total cost

proud widget
#

i'm free :3

#

sure!

proper quartz
#

For all of your reference, this is what the different scales look like compared to a human sprite on the far left

cinder raven
#

its a shame we couldn't get more of these bad boys in

#

I need to get my development setup working again

#

guh

proud widget
proud widget
#

@tawny rampart would you like to talk about the money and the sprites?

tawny rampart
#

sure, I have some time

proud widget
bleak heart
#

oh oh I have an idea for a tank

#

short profile, medium sized

#

The M577 APC from Aliens

tawny rampart
#

I got with Shy, they are making the sprites for 1 tank 64x64, and 1 mech of each size.

proper quartz
#

@proud widget i DEMAND you also ping me to show me because I love tonk

cinder raven
#

once again, I'm having bank issues atm, so it'll be a moment before I can accept any payments

#

prob just 1-2 weeks tho

cinder raven
#

Apologies all, I can't take money in good faith if the head maint has a chance to charge you money to get your stuff merged

#

Comms are closed unfortunately, I don't want you guys to get scammed by having perfectly good functional things, just for the head maint to charge you even more money to get stuff added

bleak heart
#

Great.

Actual unironic maints mafia

I do understand that the statement that starch made would be discouraging.

#

It was satirical and I can ensure that

pastel atlas

I know it’s not much to “say it”

cinder raven
#

I mean, considering they haven't changed one bit?

It's one thing to have feelings in private

Another to be so open about it

#

I hope ark finds a good maintainer to replace them at some point. There's many that would be willing to take it up.

pastel atlas
#

@cinder raven Ah also.

#

you probably can revive this

#

considering the changes in management/PR policy

bleak heart

I already reached out to Catter and they declined
