An expensive piece of equipment used to both inhibit the use of faster than light travel and pull currently FTLing ships out of faster than light and into real space.

Creates an artificial gravity well around the ship that if FTL'ed through will pull you out just on the edge of the area. If you are currently within the artificial gravity well the use of FTL travel will be impossible, forcing you to either leave the area or have the gravity well deactivated.

There is no singular projector but multiple that increase in price and size all of which would be incredibly expensive, fragile, and require a massive amount of power.

I don't understand the "when FTL'd through" part, the rest could be implemented as a field that increases the size of the "you cannot FTL while ships are nearby" field but I want a visual element if that's the case so people know what's going on and there aren't a ton of "why is this still not letting me FTL so far away?" Bug reports if this is added

A mining ship full of plasma FLT’s a long distance toward a safe station right past the pirates looking to score some quick cash. The ship goes right past as normal and the pirates are stuck looking elsewhere for their loot.

A mining ship full of plasma attempts to FTL a long distance toward a safe station. All goes well, the FTL says they should arrive just fine, and then they are abruptly snatched out of FTL and are staring down a pirate ship full of hungry privateers. The pirates knowing the ship would cross this way after mining set up to intercept them.

Would this be indicated on the FTL screen in some way that your destination is going to be this other point in space you're not intending to travel to?

Civilian, or really any ship not wishing to be displaced, would need to take care to upgrade their engines or watch out for suspicious ships blocking a straight shot toward a station or location.

#

I’ll draw up how something like this could be used in large scale combat

#

Station A (blue) vs Station B (red)

#

Fleet B-1 and Fleet B-2 both leave away from their station knowing that Fleet A is looking for an opportunity to destroy Station B. Station B has a much weaker Fleet but with the help of its station Fleet A still wouldn’t stand a chance. Unbeknownst to Station A the reason is because Station B purchased an uninteresting mining ship and outfitted it with a gravity well generator. Fleet A attempts to FTL toward Station B to crush it before defenders can arrive, but once they do they notice half their fleet is missing. That’s when Fleet B-1 FTL’s toward the mining ship and not the station and crushes the few ships caught in it in a 4 v 2. The ships that succeeded in the jump are quickly overwhelmed by both the station and fleet B-2 arriving shortly for assistance.

#

I also believe that if something like gravity well generators are added the time it takes for a ship to recharge its FTL will need to be increased to around 30 seconds.

FTL basically instantly TP's you into a special FTL space and then after a minute TP's you where you wanted to go, this would have to change that destination invisibly when you select destination I think

this wouldnt work

cool idea but it literally is impossible

I think it probably is possible but I don't think I would like being the random civilian vessel drawn into a giant faction v. faction conflict b/c the FTL blocker between their two bases or whatever also happens to be between the asteroid I was mining and the trade mall, not that it wouldn't have any positive implications

#

for the technical aspect think of how when you have 5km of FTL range and you select a point 30 km away it chooses instead to send you to the point along the same vector that other distance, but instead even shorter because of the FTL blocker happening to be along that vector at the time the FTL destination is chosen (I think when you first click to launch?)
It might be fairly expensive though computationally not sure. For the 5km limit you can just take the angle and do a min(chosen distance, 5 km) type calculation which is pretty cheap but if you also have to check every time for the presence of these ships along that route it can get more complicated

Is it really so hard to make it so the console shows you FTLing to a place your aren’t

/tp from minecraft

#

but ui

#

now imagine if your /tp also had a giant line drawn

#

to where you are tping

#

which stops you wherever this thing is

#

its really not that hard to make if FTL worked differently, but with the current mechanism its just not possible

Gravity Well Projector Online
Went to suggest this myself after playing Empire at war again, good to see someone else is a fan of the game
Ideal holds so much interesting optional for pirates, major factions, ect; implementation would be the sticking point
