the battle themes that don't have a think version are master of action commands, the time bomb ticking (chapter 2), and all shadow queen themes

master of action commands makes sense since it's literally just an optional tutorial theme

and time bomb is more like

it's a slightly different version of the theme that plays throughout the whole sequence, so it's not really its own battle theme

so yeah i think it was a very intentional decision for shadow queen

you don't get time to relax and think about things, shadow queen is here and must be stopped

I think they're the perfect blend of old sounding but still expressive of their instruments

I didn't know the N64 Rainbow Road instrument was a flute until recently 😭

It gives the older soundtracks this fantastical, detached vibe where no "instrument" matches up too well with its real counterpart

But by the DS things get more grounded

“In the Japanese market, CD is still a pretty prominent format there, and they do a lot of video game soundtracks on CD in Japan, and they’ve been doing that for years and years,” Nintendo Vice President, Player & Product Experience Bill Trinen told Variety. “Here in the U.S., we haven’t been releasing much in the way of physical soundtracks at all. And so partly, this is a little bit about us trying to gage and understand what is the demand for physical soundtracks in the United States. Part of this is also simply an interest in trying to bring video game music to a broader audience, and it’s part of a few steps that we’ve taken.”

“This week actually, is the one year anniversary of the release of Nintendo Music, which is an exclusive music streaming service for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers,” Trinen said. “There’s an app that you can download for your phone that has retro soundtracks dating back to the NES era, all the way up to more modern soundtracks from the Switch, and even some music from the Switch 2 era on it, as well. So we’re really trying to broaden exposure to our overall very, very large music library, but also then trying to find different ways to deliver it to different fans of music.”

Part of the reason Nintendo opted out of using popular streaming services is that the company wanted to let users stretch playtime from five minutes up to an hour to re-create the dynamic, looping nature of video game music, alongside custom playlists. (The app even lets users block out spoilers from songs. Users can opt out of accidentally hearing, for example, the final battle track of a Zelda game.)

“With game music, it’s designed in a way to be interactive and for the music to be flexible and responds to the player’s own gameplay, so you have a lot of little interludes and bridges connecting pieces of music together,” Trinen said. “We want people to experience the music, but we also want people to still be connected back to the gameplay experience.”

Probably the biggest question for every Nintendo Music user: Where is the soundtrack for Mario Kart World? It’s the top-selling Switch 2 game (before the arrival of the recent Pokémon game), and boasts a popular soundtrack with live musicians covering Mario music over the decades.

“I can’t go into too much detail, but I can say that it does actually take time and work to prepare soundtracks for Nintendo Music,” Trinen said laughing. The game has more than 200 tracks. “And that soundtrack is particularly robust. It’s a matter of looking at the calendar and saying whether something might fit in or not. We’ve certainly heard that people are eager to see that on Nintendo Music.”

Are CDs still common for music playing nowadays? It pains to say but I haven't really seen anyone in my circle use them for years

My brother's car is old enough that it still has a built in cd player, so he uses them sometimes

But outside of that, I always see friends and others use Bluetooth and streaming services to play music.

I don't want CDs to die out but they don't seem as common in this age

I was kinda already doing hourly NH music with this. Extend the hourly music playlist to an hour each, choose the song for the hour you're in, and then drag the slider to match the minute you're in.

But I guess this is more automated

As small as the launch collection was, it had Mario Kart 8, Kirby Star Allies, and Super Mario Galaxy which are some of my favorite soundtracks in Nintendo's entire library.

other times you get 26 lame NES games so they're not looming anymore
