I won't lie, while MK7 has good music, I feel like nostalgia is how I see some other peoples' perspectives on the songs that returned in Mario Kart 8

For my personal taste, I do prefer the livelier instruments and the incorporation of the big band Mario style more for the majority (or maybe all) of the songs that made the conversion from MK7 to MK8

To me, big band is Mario music now

it's been that way since 3D World in particular

I get it, though, there's definitely an attachment for some to the old, original versions of certain songs

I guess I just don't hold onto those ties as strongly as some others do

I will probably say that my opinion is probably influenced by recency bias, and the fact that I have been enjoying and continue to enjoy Mario Kart 8 for over a decade over both its incarnations

... it's hard to believe that over half the songs on Nintendo Music for that game alone are more than a decade old

But genuinely, I do believe Mario Kart 8 stands above most Mario Kart music for me overall

it's why I'm happy the direction of Mario Kart World's music is following in its footsteps

Mario Kart 8's Rainbow Road may be underrated, but I love it and the course itself so much

I just love the concept of this Rainbow Road in particular

You're telling me the Toad society decided to advance into space and build a space station for a race course?

The course may be a three lap circuit, a disappointment for some coming off of MK7's three section Rainbow Road, and it may be very technical overall, but that's exactly why I liked racing on it all this time

I also just really liked the aesthetic being much more different compared to the Rainbow Roads of the past - science and technology, rather than the more fantastical look most others have

perhaps best demonstrated by the presence of no less than five Rainbow Roads in MK8DX as of the Booster Course Pass

The music for MK8's Rainbow Road also leans into that aspect, as far as I can tell - lotta synths and samples used throughout the song

... actually, I feel like all the Rainbow Road songs of MK8 are aiming for a specific feel to make them distinct from each other, same with the courses

• MK8 Rainbow Road - Course is set in a space station built by a Toad-run pastiche of NASA, the music features synths and samples everywhere to lean into that futuristic aspect, particularly synths that have typically been associated with a "space" kind of mood.
• N64 Rainbow Road - A fantastical course with floating trains and bouncing Chain Chomps, with the music featuring a big band with heavy amounts of slap bass inherited from the original version.
• SNES Rainbow Road - Disco inferno! The aesthetic of this RR is, IMO, supposed to invoke disco vibes, as is the arrangement of the music, the choice of which I believe is a nod to this Rainbow Road being the oldest of them all.
• 3DS Rainbow Road has a very planetary kind of aesthetic to it. The arrangement is heavy on the synth, perhaps more than I expected, I won't lie. It's more akin to the way Berlin Byways was arranged (Eurodance style) than the sort of MK64 homage the original song was.
• Wii Rainbow Road hovers above the atmosphere of a planet, given it originated from one of the first pieces of Mario media to release after the ever popular Super Mario Galaxy. The arrangement brings in an injection of MK8 big band to the instrumentation, but continues to wear its Mario Galaxy inspiration on its sleeve, no doubt.
  So that's the way I see them, anyhow.

Not every song is going to end up being a big band style arrangement, no, but

to me it is pretty clear that that particular angle of Mario music has not changed - dare I say it has been the norm for Mario for over a decade now

Even with a big band you can do quite a lot of different things
If you listen to some of the new track music they might share similarities to 8 on a base level, but they really aren't too similar to 8's music

8 VERY often had the B section on a song be somewhat grand and sweeping or did the opposite and went for something very fast and exciting
World often keeps a consistent vibe, even in the B section they really have a very similar vibe, with more energy

is probably because of some of the interrim music we have heard thus far

If you think about a lot of recent Mario games, I think they use certain things to denote certain characters musically

so the funny trend I've noticed is that it's been 6 months since the service launched and literally every game added afterwards is either completely owned by nintendo or otherwise celebrates an anniversary

just PLA, Forgotten Land, and Engage are the only ones whose rights are co-owned by nintendo

I mean it's not surprising that most of them would be the ones without ownership hassles, or to cross promote switch games, but like
you'd think they'd add something not for the sake of tying into any anniversary at some point?
