We have them! They're kinda neat!

Last month we turned #1005947870370861067 into one, this week we replaced #1009165648410198065 with one, and this morning we set up #1019287715159744553 to hold all future Kirby related announcements, releases, and events.

Up until now, we've typically been repurposing old channels whenever we need to so that we wouldn't endlessly bloat the channel list, but that has its own problems with channel history and pin limits. The channel we used to talk about Dream Buffet was originally used to discuss the Nintendo Switch reveal in January 2017! Forums allow us to create new threads at will, and if someone is interested in it they can join them. If they're not, then they don't join, and the channel list is smaller for them. We also get 50 pins per thread, so we don't have to worry about what to delete each time a new game arrives.

That said, forums aren't perfect, and Discord is still making changes to them relatively frequently. So clearly the best option is to set up yet another forum to let people provide feedback on how we're using forums in this server. yeah

We're still working on plans for setting up more forums in the server in the future, which will get another thread once those are closer to being ready. Also please keep this thread specific to forum usage, I'll set up a general feedback thread later.

I think these forums work as a better version of threads. They tend to be temporary in nature.

Best reserved for hyped stuff or help DeClutter things (like the fanfic channel or the challenge room)

These also help as to not need a new conversation to be started on a channel about a game without activity, since not everyone has joined it

The time of radio silence on the dedicated forgotten land channel during 2021 was like, super messy given the small news we had on the game
So first impression is I'm liking this approach

Please keep the forums, they're essentially a good way to organize multiple threads and make us see no need to create new channels to discuss new Kirby games

Don't think it's really comparable though

I don't hate the forums, but they feel a little unintuitive and hard to find what you're looking for on mobile, at least. Until you click "follow" or otherwise post, they don't show up on the side at all. So you have to go digging and actually remember to open the whole forum to know that it exists in the first place.

But I get it from an organizational stand point

Threads have the same issue really, but forums don't need to be attached to a pre existing channel

lilac peak
#

Yeah, threads definitely have the same issue
I know there's no real good answer for "temporary discussion area"

solemn harbor

Forums also only exist to host different channels, so you won't run into the issue of not knowing the thread existed if there's a main chat to exist in

# lilac peak I don't hate the forums, but they feel a little unintuitive and hard to find wha...

Over time, especially once forums have become available to all servers, more people will be familiar with how they work.
But also aside from that, thread discovery is actually possible. We have threads in #gaming-galaxy, but they get hardly any use because Discord made finding out about them the most confusing thing for new users.

Moving the threads out of that channel into their own dedicated forum is one thing that's planned, and then leaving #gaming-galaxy to function the same way it currently is beyond that.

Yeah, I imagine some of it will just be getting used to it. I was probably the last person in my friend group to adopt discord at all, so take most of what I say with a hefty grain of "get off my lawn, barefoot uphill both ways" style salt 😅

There's also stuff like voice channels having a built-in text channel now
Personally I have some issues with it, and preferred having our old walky-talky channel handled by a bot, both from a moderation and a usability standpoint.
But this is how Discord decided to implement it natively. So even if I don't prefer it, and there's some pain adjusting to it, with time users will be more accustomed to using the built-in text channel, as a hidden channel appearing when you join VC is not standard.

#

though back to forums
no one forced us to use them
we just thought that we could get some good use out of them in certain circumstances

are we gonna see a replacement forum channel for dream buffet?

#

i kinda find the removal of that channel kinda abrupt tbh

dim narwhal
#

The dream buffet channel had been more or less dead before now
By the start of September, it was getting roughly 70-80 messages a day for a week. Had a brief spike of 200 messages in a day, then averaged between 15-40 messages up until we briefly repurposed it into a RTDL Deluxe channel.

#

If there’s new content we’ll probably spin up a thread for it, but it seems people have discussed what they can about the game at present
Otherwise people looking to play together can use #1005947870370861067

#

Though the matchmaking forum is a bit of a mess after discord changed the archival duration to always be 7 days regardless of setting

#

Generally though the approach to creating a new thread in #1019287715159744553, and any other moderator controlled forums we make, will be if there’s enough interest for one. That threshold is a lot lower than making or repurposing an actual channel, not that there were any specific guidelines we followed on that, but we probably won’t make a thread on Kirby slide.

how do u check those metrics 👀 is it discord-built-in

As someone who moderates some servers, yea it's built in if you have the perms to view it

Is the movement necessary? It feels like the two are basically the same, I don't see any reason for why we need to do it other than making things complicated.

#

I get more notifications for more things I don't care about versus threads.

dim narwhal
#

er, sorry, gonna move it over to #1028798658180812953

This one is for an earlier change
