it's the narrative dissonance between the good guys celebrating one major victory after another but the antagonists never showing any sort of frustration at their repeated defeats which sort of detracts from the protags' victory
you can keep the antagonist faction as a constant looming threat without compromising my investment in plot events that should be major victories but seem to only ever be minor inconveniences at best for the antagonists

just finished wuwa chapter 2 acts 6 and 7 (lupa finale + phrolova)
act 8 (augusta) done as well, that was another one that felt randomly much longer than others
was also good tho, augusta is a certified real one

honestly idk if it was just the fact that 1.0 was so weak that it makes everything else look better in comparison, but wuwa story chapters have consistently ranged from good to great ever since
don't think there's been a single one i'd describe as weak so far
the starting acts to rinascita (up until cartethyia's introduction) were probably the ones i was least invested in and even those were solid
i also thought the end to 1.x with the black shores / shorekeeper kinda lost me somewhere along the way, the concept was good but i think it would've benefitted from being a two-parter story like some others (e.g. lupa's). for such a consequential lore chapter it felt hella rushed
one thing i will say of augusta's chapter that rubbed me the wrong way though is - where the fuck was lupa? there's like literally no in-universe reason i can think of she shouldn't have been participating in the events of that chapter
stuck out like a sore thumb to me, shined a big friggin spotlight on the narrative weakness of the gacha model and how it has to focus on shilling the new character(s) above all else
of course her being forgotten is much clearer when playing through in real-time, binging through the chapters one after the other. it was maybe easier to stomach playing live with months between the conclusion of her acts and the start of augusta's
