yea limbus has the buff that it really is all coming from one consistent source for the storytelling. it really shows in how even the uptie stories often end up being really good short stories in and of themselves. i can see a larger project like fgo having a writing department, which has its own merits mind you, but i can easily see how that can also cause some things to slip through the cracks.

This causes me so much pain because it’s so freaking true. 10 years with the FGO writers has given enough time for people to figure out who writes which story and interlude chapters for the most part. Some of the big bangers like Shimousa, LB5, the murder mystery event have had writers other than Nasu. And obviously the huge amount of input that individual artists have too, which leads to unexpected sleeper hit fan faves like Barghest, Oberon, the Indian pantheon…. Heck, every GudaGuda event ever is practically a crystallization of that. Unexpected fan favorite NPCs that manifest out of the ether, invoking so much goodwill from the fan base that the FGO team goes out of their way to make them playable a year or two later

But also. YEAH. It’s led to stuff like Agartha (which has never repeated, thank gods). Or Parvati’s artist, a budding FGO team member, getting harassed so badly that he basically cut himself off from the internet and only said ‘thank you to everyone who uses her’ in the materials books- where, traditionally, artists and writers yap for YEARS about their designs and philosophy.

Like. FGO experience is wading through a field of 6s to 9s for some shining clusters of 10s- arguably 11s, in my biased opinion.

Limbus has gone from 7 to 8 to 9 to 10 to 10 to 10 to 10 to 10.

Arguably the lowest quality stories in limbus are the short railway/walpurgis things and thats not bevause they are bad, they are just short

in all seriousness, i think that for as much as nikke fans overrate the story as a whole (it's good and engaging and i've gotten a lot of enjoyment and emotional moments out of it but it's certainly not without any number of issues)

they are most guilty of overrating the opening sequence

but the way 2.x has played out is like a microcosm of how the gacha system can limit storytelling

whether self-insert or not, it definitely seems like gacha games are gravitating more toward "everyone loves the MC" (either hinted romantically or strong friends)

and it's a whole lot more believable when the MC is actually taking an active role in solving their problems lol

even if it's just providing the support necessary for them to solve it themselves

none of the anni events feature him and several of those are absolute bangers

i think everyone who says that gacha game protags are not self inserts are factually incorrect, if you select dialogue are a part of the story and you can name yourself whatever you want it is in theory placing yourself in the protagonist shoes regardless if they shown different personality

arknights doctor is a good example, they are a vital part of the world of tera and has been shown to do stuff when not in the players control but they can still interact with the characters as a means of immersion.
Its simply what a rpg means, you are role playing where’s the shame in that

And sometimes it's annoying AF. Look at the rise in vexation against Expedition 33, and previous year Game Awards winners.

• Fate is not a series primarily written by queer people (to our knowledge, unless Nasu is genuinely Takeuchi's secret wife). But it is definitely still a series with themes that resonate strongly with queer audiences (including but far from limited to just myself), so calling Limbus "Fate but for queer people" is one hell of a misnomer. Mordred still counts, Xu Fu exists. Even if Morgan is roundabout self-insert shipping, she and Saber still apply. D'eon's entire existence. Mary Anning. I can and could go on.

I'll concede that the scope of FGO Part 2 has been pretty extreme (though calling it 'high complex outerversal literary reference beam' is a highly gross reductionism, even before I consider the Limbus irony here)

But ig I'll just ask, how do you define a Deus Ex Machina- how much can a Deus Ex Machina be foreshadowed before it's no longer a DEM?

Musashi coming in to slash the (not a) wooly mammoth was first suggested like half a year before. LB4 spent its whole time deliberately circumventing the black box to be able to make it pay off at the end of the chapter, with the emotional throughline of Jinako's lonely cycles. One could argue that LB5 even broke DEM by having Super Orion face Artemis ahead of time and having us fight an Immature Beast. The closest thing to a DEM in LB3 was QSH being mindblown by the existence of a phone as proof of humanity's need to be individualistic

i state it as bias because the name of a series was thrown without any corelation to the talk whatsoever, because in a situation where you want to critque a media, you would want to create a argument then use a franchise as a point of reference. my problem is not the subject its how its used, and it almost feels its used as propaganda, as you have as much said.

fate interacts with the concepts of gender well enough, but as far as themes related to sexuality goes it is so dissapointly shallow that i genuinely believe its not even a afterthought for the writers, D’eon is poorly executed nonbinary rep because agartha exists. and xu fusexuality is treated as a gag not only that but if you can consider the “mc sexual” modus operandi of the game, it has an exception to them. hell achilles, a very famous example of homosexuality (or at least implication, if you are “they were roomates” type of person), never even mention patroclus and is implied to feel attraction to atalante.
it somehow exists in a state of stasis that it doesn’t know how to proceed with those theme or explictly say that they are in fact not straight. as such i cannot in good faith say that fate represent the queer community well.

FGO LB6 was and still is a story that's been heralded by many people within the community as a really transcendent work of fiction and the apex of gacha stories

I had expectations set that it would move me in the way it's moved others but it was simply a very entertaining story

Limbus Company, being a gacha game, has stories too and those stories can be compared and contrasted to LB6 since both are contained within gacha games

I find FGO to be very "meatheaded", to put it lightly, its allusions to fiction range from a pleasant tribute to a cool and niche work of fiction (Taigong Wang) to an extremely offensive and ignorant take on a very important and foundational figure in literature (Roland)

what good writing there is to take away from the game I've found to be few and far between, sidelined in favor of the gacha machine

I think there is certainly something to be said about gacha fandoms and oberhyping their stories. Obviously fgo fans hyping up lb6 like the second coming of christ does it a bit of a disservice, but i cant say that other fandoms arent also guilty of that, limbus especially. Like if after all the people telling you that limbus story is amazing you started the game now and then dropped it before you finished canto 1, i couldnt even blame you all that much, because even if i like it and think it sets the groundwork nicely, i cant say with a straight face that its that much better than the singularities that come before camelot.
The same is true for the widely acclaimed arknights, a new player still has to slog through the admttedly subpar opening acts to get to the gems.
This slow start is true for many games but for gachas especially it seems to be more common and pronounced while also having fanbases that are more fantaic and tribalistic

I find fgo rarely does a "standard" way of interpreting myths anymore. It seems like for a while now every new servant has to have some sort of twist or gimmick. And sometimes they are genuinely interesting and clever but they are very much hit or miss.
And it hits especially hard if that miss happens to a character or mythos you care about

Ultimately i do think theres some genuinely exceptional storytelling in fgo but it is also a game that has had several different writers and has continued for over a decade, so these inconsitencies are only natural. Im able to not get too attached to things and enjoy it for what is. Ignoring the truly bad parts while savouring the fantastic ones. But that is not something you should expect everyone to do.

In fact i had so much fun that i went back to old is modes to clean up tasks so i can e2 operators to use in the new one

tbh his parry mechanic is kind of insane

i could buy that they just didn't want him to be unkillable and super high damage lol

banyue just has a spammable insta-parry at no cost lol

to be clear i think he should do more damage than he currently does, i think they nerfed him too hard

especially given how hard he is to play properly
