basically story mode difficulty is piss easy and the power level is a small fraction of normal story
which is exactly what it should be so story progression stops being gated behind literal months or even a year of progress
all other meaningful progression (outpost level, feature unlocks, etc) are still gated behind normal story progress but that's fine imo
basically with the addition of story mode for moving through story, normal/hard campaign just become stages you clear when possible to level outpost or unlock new features
it's kinda silly that nikke, a story-focused game, took 3 years to make their story not time-gated to hell and back
but we'll still take the change

yes it is happening concurrently with the latest main story chapters
at a bare minimum you will be very confused without having completed
- main story chapter 24
- second affection side story
- last kingdom event
- eden spear side story
(in that order)
and you'll still be quite confused even with that minimum since there are still characters and references to events you won't know about lol
but that's at least what you need to get a broad idea
the eden spear side story is by far the most important of those and acts as basically a prequel to goddess fall

so they didn't bungle it, hooray for them lol
just in terms of QoL alone, 3rd anni is already a major success
login time finally being normal, longer term sim room and intercept auto battle access all would be major Ws already
but story mode too for people who want or need to catch up and don't want to wait months to get the necessary power level? honestly a gamechanger for a big part of the community and anyone who's getting into the game from here on out
imo the two biggest barriers to entry for nikke were story mode time gating and (i honestly think this, no joke) load times and lack of sweep making dailies more of a chore than they should be
and this update solved both in one go
