My knowledge of the overall Arknights lore is like a B at best, but Kazimierz- absolutely A+

And Mylnar is a key figure in Kazimierz, mostly in gameplay but also in lore

#

So Kazimierz is the Polish-inspired country of horse people; the gist is that in the semi-distant past they relied on Arthurian style chivalric knights to keep order and maintain peace with other nations. But as time went by, industrialism and capitalism overtook the knights order. So now the knights are crowned through internationally streamed gladiator tournaments rather than actual combat, and the businesspeople use that to keep peace/popularity with other nations

Said tournaments are also lowkey rigged af, of course. They do also have a standing force of old-school traditional knights to keep order by force, but theyā€™re relatively small despite their individual strength. Good enough to stop skirmishes and deter war, but also kind of the measuring stick for how dangerous other nationsā€™ red buttons are

Mylnar is, at the current point in time, the oldest member of the Nearl family- their lineage had some of the oldest, strongest, most famous knights in Kazimierz history. But Mylnarā€™s brother and sister-in-law were killed on the battlefield, and he left the front lines to keep his other sister and nieces from getting bought out by greedy wannabe landlords and such.

He spent 20-ish years basically being a wage slave in the biggest company in Kazimierz, never taking time off and usually working overtime just to make sure there was enough money to combat whatever schemes corporate overlords would try to pull on what remained of his house

In his younger years, Mylnar was a powerful campaign knight in his own right, with his own following of warriors with lesser stature but powerful strength in their own right. But he lost one of his right-hand men, along with his brother and sister-in-law, and disbanded his ā€˜round tableā€™ right then and there. Plenty of people still thought that he could have gone into the commercial knight showbiz and made enough of a killing to keep his house secure AND prevent the Nearl family name from falling into obscurity in the eyes of the public. But he didnā€™t; he developed a disdain for the entire concept of the knight order (both commercial and traditional) after those deaths.

Still, his niece Margaret Nearl (known as Nearl and Nearl the Radiant Knight in Arknights gameplay) refused to accept his pessimism. She went into the knight tournaments despite his warnings, andā€¦ her story is basically the majority of the modern day Kazimierz saga in Arknights lol. But she ended up winning not once, but TWICE- catapulting her into the ranks of the most elite of elite commercial knights. She used the sociopolitical clout from her Radiant Knight title to clear their house from any remaining debts, scare off anyone who WANTED to pull something against the Nearls, and make a powerful public statement pushing for change in Kazimierz as a society.

Mechanist started full of confidence, but got swept off the course by his own contraptions at the first U-curve. Misery, sitting lost in thought on his steadily moving stool, failed to take evasive action and took Outcast out in the process... As the favorites dropped out one by one, Ace caught up with Logos and Scout in the lead, and the trio charged towards the finish line in a clump. That was when Amiya and Kal'tsit walked in. Ace immediately exited the course, but Logos and Scout failed to notice that the cheering crowd had suddenly gone quiet. Anyway, Logos won, Scout took second place, and there was no third place.

i suppose to be fair, the difference between trying and getting top 10% and autoing to top 30% is like... 300 gems
