I think it's just likely that the entire world is a narrative set in place with the travelers being tasked with being the pro and antagonists by the Kiara void lady due to them disrespecting the world's of stories they've been going to before by coming and going as they please without answering for the ramifications they could lead behind
I think it was done to show the travelers what effect they could leave on stories, as by entering and leaving they leave their own imprint, altering the story based on their perceptions of it
