Battle Castle was a neat concept, given that it puts emphasis on winning battles in an efficient manner, rather than just simply winning.
Frustrating, though. It's a neat concept but not one that I think was executed too terribly well.
When you think about it, the Battle Factory really is a true test of skill. There's a bit of luck involved given the mons you are choosing to use, but it's mostly about making good decisions and making the best of your strengths.
Also, it's 100% investment free, so you can just start battling without any prior training required.

...And then you notice that barely anyone actually uses its physical movepool. Instead you find out that a lot more of its use went towards moves like Sludge Bomb, Thunderbolt, among other things.
I think it mostly had something to do with how stuff introduced in Gen I had the silliest selection of special moves. Starmie's the real winner in such a situation given how much it learns, but you got mons like Snorlax, Nidoking, Chansey and many others getting special moves that, for mons introduced today, would not learn. And some of them aren't good at using them at all, like say, Snorlax or Machamp, But Nidoking just uses them way more frequently.
