You get enough levels to pass battles, and in especially tough trainer battles, you may end up having the team get enough to hit the level cap for the 10 waves you go through.
Even though they call it a cap, you can still use Rare Candy to push past it too, so they're still helpful even if you can't get any more exp during the 10 waves.

Afterwards, I had to duke it out with Zacian and Latias, since I couldn't really depend on all my bruisers to scratch that +6 defense.||
