Follow Me is really good

it makes you a lot more mobile so you have way more map presence, the taunt is good at locking down enemies and it helps protect carries, it gets you close so draining kiss can actually connect and heal

Yeahh it has like this delay and more mobile pokemon can just get out of it before it affects them

at level 4 up until you learn your second move, you have really high damage with

draining kiss + disarming voice

so make use of that a lot for surprise kills or securing wild pokemon (like the altaria swablu)

Last year they gave us a weird ass Pumpkin quick match map

You have some sort of pumpkin shooter as item and you shoot them to make opponent transforms to Pumpkin, Force drop your points on ground+moves are disabled+can’t do anything but walk around

Imagine a match with competent enemy players, knows how to target players, but your teammate is dumb to dodge those and lose EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME

It didn’t help that the map was needed if you wanna do the events mission iirc…

He really doesn't give two shits about anything outside VGC

I'm slowly piecing through this and it reads like this:

• Dynamax was a good mechanic (I disagree with this)
• Raid Battles were one of the best things of the generation (I agree)
• Multiplayer facilitation was complete ass, as in ways to connect with friends (Highly agree)
• Competitive accessibility was great (I agree)
• Presentation, world design, animations were lacking, and lack of voicing in any capacity was jarring (I agree)
• Animations were inconsistent (Agree)
• Changing formats in VGC were good (Agree that keeping it from going stale was good, disagree that it was a good change always)
• The most popular VGC format was the one that banned Dynamax (Heh)
• Urshifu was designed with competitive in mind (Don't care. He only says this because of Unseen Fist and Dynamax mechanic)
• Both Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra were mixed bags (Agree)
• The best map design was Crown Tundra by a mile (Agree)
• A lot of the story of all of SwSh, DLC included, was boring af (Agree)
• The footprints mission should never be done again (Agree)

Pretty much almost all of his praise for the games was VGC formatting, raid battles, and competitive accessibility

Also his take on the worst thing about competitive was bringing back Lando and Incin

He has a corresponding tierlist vid too that ranks the games, I'll check where SwSh are

I skipped to the full list, he has:

BW2 at the top
PLA, Emerald, Platinum in S Tier
RS, BW in A Tier
DP, FRLG, and Gen 1 in B Tier (WTF Gen 1 up here?)
SwSh, ORAS in C Tier
HGSS, Gen 2, LetsGo, XY in D Tier
Gen 7 as a whole in F Tier
And BDSP in garbage tier

I think the fact that follow me is a dash + taunt + shield + defenses boost is what makes it so good

you can pull off a lot of tricks with eject button follow me

clef's attack speed is really low so you cant make use of the stompy attack change all that much, the numbers are also low

Dynamax was weirdly the most balanced of the three gimmicks (dyna, z moves and megas) in vgc which is why wolfey likes it

The most balanced thing about dynamax was zacian not being able to dynamax

I'd argue z moves was the most balanced

(I mean the other 2 mechanics were not balanced at all either)

Id argue z moves were more balanced too but god were they a pain

also the worst part to come out of gen 7 for ou specifically is the tapus

Megas were extremely centralizing
Where you either had a mega or you were shooting yourself on the foot

Z moves were hard to predict and could just nuke one of your key mons out of nowhere

Dynamax i say that 90% of it being overpowered had to do with flying max move being able to raise speed at full power

Lets hope that the tera stab boost isnt strong enough to make it broken

I'm more a fan of Dynamax, to be honest. Just, feels right.

And yet I still think that yeah, Mega Evolution was incredibly centralizing.

Cause if you had Kangaskhan, Lopunny, Audino(lol), Beedrill or Pidgeot, you were gonna Mega Evolve it.

Cause why wouldn't you

Right now though I'm just disappointed, cause with Mega Evolutions it just seems like some mons just aren't very likely to gain a new sort of evolution down the line.

Z-Moves I felt were a step in the right direction, but it still felt off to me somehow.

dynamax felt fine in doubles, but it's like, if you're not gonna care about balancing things for competitive singles, just get rid of singles in the game altogether imo

and that's my hot take for the evening

gen 8 did a lot for competitive accessibility but it still didn't bridge the gap between the main competitive format and the main story format

if your generational mechanic is a middle finger to singles balance, what's the point

alternatively, actually give a shit about balance in your non-competitive format

and if you're gonna push doubles as your main competitive format, as has been the case for over a decade now, integrate it more fully into regular play
