#How to dock when orbits not aligned (please help)
15 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
do you see the an/dn? that is your relative angle. place a maneuver at one of them with
/
to lower it to 0°. At that high inclination you maybe need 2 or 3 orbits to not get a too high orbit
are the two orbits aligned enough for it to be successful?
idk, how much degree
You hover over the descending or ascending node, if both are zero. Then you're good.
If not, then you keep readjusting by burning normal or anti-normal
Generally, I would suggest to save, quit the game and start the docking tutorial from the main menu. It's basically these steps
- set the other vessel as your target
- get the inclination right (as described above)
- If your orbit is further away you are slower, so wait until your target is behind you, if your orbit is closer to the mun, you are faster. wait until you are close behind
- create a maneuveur node and add prograde or retrograde until the two orbits "touch". No move the maneuver node with the mouse until you get a closest approach < 5km
- execute the maneuver
- make sure your velocity is set to "Target" (not Orbit/Surface). Its over your navball, next to your speed. Click on it until it says "Target"
- If your are ~15km away from the target, burn retrograde until you are ~50ms relative to your target
- Wait until you are ~400m away, reduce speed to 0m/s (still burning retrograde with "Target" as your Speed)
- Now Select "Target" for your ship orientation
- activatae RCS and slowly move to your target (~10m/s max)
To rotate, use WASD + Shift/Ctrl (as usual) and translate the position of your ship with JKLI and H/N to move forward/backward. It's easier than to turn your ship Antitarget and use your main engine
- Approach until 100m and slow down to 0m/s with H/N
Now try to slowly approach the target (Thats hard to describe). If things get out for control, dont forget: you can always stop all relative velocity when you burn retrograde to your target
then try again
if your having troubles don't worry it took me a hot minute to learn how to dock aswell
