#Promotions of units

Great men train years to battle under their wise commanders, yet the greatest are those who have ridden into hell and returned home, blood stained of their enemies

The old guard of any nation is a treasured value in war, as nothing can prepare you for warfare more than experience

We need to bring back individual unit promotions, but simplify them, perhaps something similar to civ4 or civ3, where its a simple perk, or just an increase in strength

There should be an incentive to protect your units, carefully using them without losing their unique strength. This can work very well with how commanders already allow quick maneuvering of troops

I could get behind this, I don’t really miss the complexity of unit promotions in civ 6 but I could get behind a simple ranking up system for units.

This would definitely reward people for keeping individual units alive over long periods of time, similar to how total war games do it where the unit just receives increased stats.

Please, Civilization VII development team, do this.

I like how in civ 7 they moved away from individual promotions to just promotions for generals. I think this has simplified things and I'm guessing they wanted to remove micromanagement systems, in general. I don't know about individual unit promotions on top of general promotions. I think that would make for even more micromanagement than in previous civ games which I think they are wanting to move away from, which I have appreciated

I completely agree with this post. There doesn't even need to be a menu or something (make it completely automated). Make it like promotions in some RTS games (command & conquer generals), where units can rank up 2 or 3 times and just get a very slight combat strength (or maybe movement) boost. Siege could **maybe **even get a ranged upgrade on max level.

It could be a tool to further differentiate unit types as well. But the main point is that if you have units that stayed with you for a long time, that should somehow be reflected and you should be motivated to keep them around. It would make the game more immersive for me too.

In civ 6 having a fully upgraded ranged unit which gained the ability to shoot twice in the same turn felt amazing. It's something you have to work really hard for and then you do everything in your power to keep that unit alive.

As far as I understand it the post isn’t saying individual unit promotions should work like commander promotions.

They are saying that they should automatically receive higher “ranks” overtime the more they fight, which rewards keeping units alive and creates “veteran units”.

This wouldn’t require micromanagement as there wouldn’t be anything for you to do for this to happen aside from play the game normally and keep units alive.

Technically units get some promotions through researching a perticular tech or gaining access to a particular resource. But yeah some reward for winning battles would be nice as well. I personally like the Old World system where training is a resource that gets generated from military buildings and combat xp. Then you can spend the traning resource how you like on whatever unit you want. It is a good mechanic I think.
