#Reflective Thoughts on Civ VII’s Evolution - Suggestions for Age Flexibility and Clarity

Civ 7 came out and I played it nonstop. Late nights early morning weekends rinse repeat. Loved playing. I could overlook the lack of options I was used to in civ 6 rising storm bc this was a new game and I was having too much fun. However that started to change slowly. I became more aware of bugs that ranged from little to strategy altering. I became more frustrated with the UI and civpedia that had seemingly stepped back in time, as well a distinct lack of choice in how I wanted to play. I would like to offer my frustrations in bulk and how I would change them.

  1. Choice to transition to different civ. Include ability to swap leaders with inclusion of more:
This one's pretty succinct, just give us a choice. I play on epic age epic length deity difficulty and I find that either I Really want a change or I Really don't. Pretty much determines if I continue that game through the transition, sadly means most of the time I just stop playing until I feel like starting a new antiquity. Having a choice would be nice

  2. Don't stop the era for the whole map. Ruins the flow and feel of interactions with civs:
Probably affects longer length game players most. Love calling this event "the annunaki visit" bc that's what it feels like. In previous civs most of the fun was diplomacy through the ages. You could create your own cold war, sponsoring a friendship with a lesser neighbor to your enemy to destabilize them. Or be behind yourself with a bad spawn and slowly crawl your way back through decisions and diplomacy instead of being thrust back into contention. Just feels wrong for a historic world building game. Instead of getting rewards at the end of an era, give rewards for era progress (idea 3). But don't just can this mode either, why not keep it in the game as a unique game mode for people who enjoy the idea? Everybody eats

Got more but got no space hiyah

Again, only reason I'm posting here is bc they STILL haven't posted on steam and I've been told this is the most efficient way to whine about my feelings towards the game lol I'm just VERY passionate about this game franchise and even after 600 hours in game on civ 7 have complaints out the wazoo that I'm willing to post about on a Tuesday morning. No hate hope everyone who enjoys it gets to keep enjoying what's out now forever. Just hoping that around the corner the majority will also get some love and we can play one civ through the ages if we want.

"just play civ 6 if you don't want age transition" what an idea! Wow go play the years old game as opposed to the new one that you were looking forward to and spent non refundable money on! In all seriousness tho, that's all you had?

Cool, guess my opinion isn't valid bc it isn't the same as yalls. It's a real human accounting of this game that is less positive than y'alls, if yall just want only positive opinions then adios my bad for disrupting your fragile ecosystem. Womp womp.
I care brother that's why I posted. My point is I was led to believe I was getting mink chocolate chip and got pistachio. Good for some but gross to many

I swear, some of you seem to have forgotten this is Sid Meier’s Civilization, not your game.

Do you even read before you react? Also who you talking to? It's just me brother. I literally stated it for ya dude. Preordered due to a well earned trust by firaxis for civ 3-6 being awesome. Was let down and am upset. Can't find a meaningful platform to share my opinion. Came here. Guess it's only for happy opinions of the minority still playing on the regular. Again. Didn't mean to start something I just feel my opinion and opinions like mine are going very unheard and undervalued. Proof is also in the pudding the numbers ain't great
I'm trying to form discourse man I got attacked haha
how is a complaint not feedback????

Honest complaint regarding my disappoinment with the direction of civ 7

#

That's why I'm bummed about my original post 😭 It was much more put together haha. This one was half done in frustration figuring out the system I was trying to communicate on for the first time. I'll come back with more real examples as I can. I really do love civ and still believe that this game is gonna finish strong like all the others sorry for the rough start to this post lol

Is it okay for you if I go ahead and rename the title ? @analog niche

I don’t really get any kind of sense of the direction you do want it to go in from your posts, just that you don’t like it.

And remember this isn't a spot for reviews - it's for feedback

These will help you 🙂

Sure, but please go through our #1334259104058834956 rules to ensure that you are not breaking/breaching them.

We too want the community to submit their feedback in the constructive and appropriate way that helps other players and the Devs too. We also wouldn't want to remove any feedback that a player has created and has put lots of effort and sentiment into it.
So kindly make sure that you are following the rules, and we don't have to remove it. Thanks

#

+1 to what @dry sequoia has mentioned above ^^ kindly go through his messages too.

We will try our best to support your feedback as long as it follows the rules and is constructively placed feedback. Have a good one 😊

I'm not good at the internet talking to people thing please do
That's part of my point meache and sita, is that these posts tend to get dogpiled and buried, whether intentional or not. These view points come from frustration and it's tough for them to come out kindly and with constructive intentions so bear with me plz
I know it wasn't super concise but c'mon neon you see what I'm getting at. Love the idea of changing civs. Why not add changing leaders to the mix too? But at the same time why is it a forced thing? if I get a lucky roll on spawn for my civ and leader maybe I want to keep my themes, I believe that should be an option. I think innately transitions are better than not having them. But I also see the drastic reset of the board as terribly immersion breaking. The reset of tech and civic trees is odd, honestly just feels very strange researching. "Future tech" when I don't know what gunpowder is yet. And they did add something for this issue, they now give you free civics and techs at the start of the era for each future one you research, that was a great change btw. Plus Having to build all new buildings while losing your current buffs hurts too. Had a plus 24 academy library just cooking for turns and boop all of the sudden now all my people are just slightly smarter than everyone else. Not to mention the wars it ends. I've likened it to the annunaki coming down and bringing balance and advancement to the world and leaving without a trace. If that's what you enjoy, down for it to be an option. However I feel like a majority of comments I read feel the same as i do: we miss a more chaotic board state. Where there's 1-4 superpowers and the rest of the world is just surviving. Getting to a state where you can almost have a cold war running enabling lesser nations at your behest. Can't really do that yet in this game, hopefully just yet haha

If this seems more like a review then feedback I'm sorry. I'm trying to illustrate my frustrations while giving other possible options to fix what I believe are issues. I don't mean to step on toes. Truly what I'm missing most is the lack of freedom I feel per game and would like to see more options for the player moving forward. As well as a concise road map detailing the vision of the team, that would go a long way to helping the scorned fan's sentiment I think. Still just wanna play endless civ again, having fun with some other games but it's just not the same 😭

Big walls of text and lots of subjective points aren't the best, objective points with clear feedback areas are really helpful

  1. Change era reward/victory condition system to give out rewards as you complete them instead of just at the end of the timer:
With the previous point we gotta do something about the rewards. The end of the era is player specific so victory paths should be the same. Once you finish the current one (i.e. wonders, codexes etc) the next set for the next age unlock. Don't even need to change the ones we got, I say just add 2 or 3 more avenues to encourage more styles of play. I'm thinking maybe a yin/yang diplomacy track, have enough positive relationships or conversely enough enemies. Maybe an exploration one, have X% of map seen for a reward. I love using imago mundi and maxing my maps! Would love to see some more ways to reward play styles so it doesn't feel like I HAVE to build 7 wonders or settle too aggressively for resources. Or whatever the other ages ones are I don't play them enough to know forreal. Add some cool ones that entise uniqueness. That way everyone can get all the bonuses throughout the game as they play, and more unlocks and its just more more more options! Feels kind of corralled into playing a certain way just to meet as many points as I can currently which brings down the sandbox feel of the game, for me.

  1. Exploration age and map overhaul:
I saw the update plan today and am curious to see what that does to the map 🧐 however. One of the most common sentiments I see looking over discussions is the exploration age just kinda lacking as opposed to the others. It's shorter, the buildings are around less long, the "new lands" itself is super underwhelming, and it just kinda exists for me. It's the crux of whether I want to keep playing or not. I'm not super sure about my ideas for this one but I liked what I saw someone wrote about how it feels like it jumps too far forward, we kind of miss a lot of history, from just finally being able to use iron well and travel shorelines, it just jumps us into gunpowder and oceanic travel. Feels a bit disjointed so maybe add some extra stuff at the beginning, or maybe a transition age idea could be neat.

  2. More flexibility in building in city limits:
This one is just hindering for the sake of hindering. How frustrating is it to be able to as a civ build wonders in a line from your capital just to learn you can't build an Amphitheater/arena on the other side of them on a tile surrounded by 5 mountains and the wonder chain. Just empty land I guess SIGH why can't we just ya know, Build wherever? On a similar chain of thought not being able to remove resources has really grown to bug me like we could in civ 6 but can't in 7? Not being able to settle without being 3 tiles outside of any town or city no matter what seems harsh. I'm OCD as heck and would love to make the choice if I want to hinder my own city's tile availability. No compact city centers for me. Lack of freedom leads to lack of replayability for me, again.

#
  1. Diplomacy freedom:
Literally just add every single option for every diplomatic event from civ 3-6. There's so few options currently. Can't exit the menu to check what city you're being offered without closing the deal first. Couple other little things that irritate like loyalty not being a thing so settling is just a 3 tile barrier and nothing else. Need more flow with it.

  2. change crisis to happen as a result of in game choices, sync to the goodie hut and unique quests system:
Could see some spice up in gameplay here. Make choices matter. Those little choices between science and culture? Take food over prod. Oh yeah they matter. Add checks and balances that tip a scale towards a type of crisis, if you even have one at all! i think this would lead to so much more variety in games as well as make ya think a bit harder. Crises are just programmes doomsdays rn that happen bc. Being able to choose which ones or if they happen is good and all, but why not implement a neat gameplay idea for them to come about rather than just have to deal with it or remove it

8: in general, just add everything from old games that isn't in this one:
I'm talking some scenarios, map creator, more map options based on earth, option to change civ color, things like that. Autoexplore not being in on start gave me conniptions too don't think I've forgot about that

9: please just be more open with your fans:
I'll agree it got ugly. Lots of nasty opinions out there but most of them are from people who really care. They preordered this game bc they love it. And it was a let down for many. Mods are basically accepted as needed to navigate the UI. And we have no roadmap and no real communication outside of these updates and its a bummer. I know it's tough and maybe some things happened in production with being rushed idk but That's the point. We don't know what happened to cause such a depressing launch of a beloved IP. All we hear is the worst stuff or nothing.

#

In closing. Game is great, looks literally too good for me to go back to civ 6. I wish there were more options throughout. I wish the civpedia told us a bit more about gameplay, Love reading the facts and context though! Until we have OG civ through the eras as an option again, I reckon this game won't be as popular as anyone wants.
I don't mean this as an attack on anyone or to insult your preferences. I am hoping that these things I'm talking about are added in and that there's unlimited options for everyone to enjoy the game bc it's a history simulator sandbox and we should have maximum choices possible.
