After 74.4 hours of gameplay and 5 months, I have decided that there is very little likelihood that anyone even cares about this issue. the issue? Well, after playing every conceivable scenario (although obviously subjective), I cannot find a challenging manner to play Civ7 without WAR, every path leads there, overwhelming odds, ever increasing hoards of foes with not path to even negotiate.

I have now attempted to play 7 different leaders, 38 different game starts with varied settings, 74 hours of non-stop WAR. There is not option to diminish this, as well as no possible way to determine this within two hours of purchase.

This is maddening to the extent that I have (for the second time) uninstalled an ultimate edition game from my library because this version does not fit the mold. Say what you will about my preference, I say it's 'skullduggery' at is finest. I will never pre-order another product from Fraxis or 2k, this was the straw that broke the camels back.

2 hour window to determine how unpliable my experience is to me, is not why I buy games. My dismay and comments remain either unacknowledged or dismissed wholesale. This is not the same company I felling in love with. This is not the same game I fell in love with, not just incrementally altered with better UI (smh) and smoother performants (again smh) but impossible to play through by using my brains and not my troops. This is what endeared me to this game from the days of the SQUARE tiles (v 1.0 with my mail-in product registration card). Sid, where have you gone?

You sold me a game that I actually hate to play, With no means of determining that within the refund windows, now I'm stuck with $130 digital trash fire that will continue to burn me for years to come. I'm not trying to be toxic here, but I am also not sure if anyone cares how immensely displeased I am. I gave you a fair shot, only to be another lamb led to slaughter just another 'end-user' who isn't happy with his purchase, with zero control over the outcome.

My guess is that; my opinions are irrelevant. I bought it, now I own it. if this were any other industry, I would have legal recourse, as it is, this past few years have led down a rabbit hole of 'Ultimate' purchased for games that are absolutely NOT what I wanted.

To be fair; There are some pretty intriguing game design changes that I really wish I could enjoy. And since I can't stand Civ7, I've reconnected with older versions (all of which are also in my library & are installed). I've also purchased around 20 indie games for less than $10 that I can't stop playing.

so, if that's your goal, than well done.

For me, never again. You've got my money, I no longer have a valid opinion so. I'm just going to move on.

but never again... never...

2 hour window... how ridiculous, for a game that takes 5 hours to setup.

This is my final steam review. not that i (or it) matters, but I thought my feedback was important so I took your advice.

Lack of viable peaceful or diplomatic playstyles; game feels war-focused

Hey V_Trinity! Retitled your thread to make it easier for our devs to follow per our feedback guidelines.

Definitely hearing that you feel Civ VII leans too heavily on war, and that peaceful or diplomatic strategies didn’t play out the way you expected. Just want to chime in and say I appreciate you taking the time to share this here! Devs are always on the lookout for feedback.

I think this point leads into the general issue where there’s quite limited counterplay options. So if you ever want to stop someone you just have to declare war on them

Please don't view this as dismissing your feedback, as it's valid feedback and we appreciate you sharing it 👍

I did though want to share though that I've got a pinned post here #civ7-strategy-chat message that's a collection of tips I've learned and heard from other players on how to try to keep better/positive relations with AI players to reduce chances of going to war (though it's not a guarantee for avoiding war)

This thread hasn't devolved yet, and in general we try not to resort to locking threads unless it gets to that point (though technically there are other reasons we lock threads, like duplicate management, or a post that is essentially a bug report which doesn't belong in feedback forum).

While it's great if feedback can be constructive with potential suggestions, we do value both positive and negative feedback. As noted above, Sar has retitled this thread in the hopes to better gather feedback on this aspect.

I feel like the endeavors need to be stronger and more varied. Simply exchanging influence for a 12 science boost isn't all that great, but maybe some stuff that leans into play styles, something related to trade routes, to land borders, land claims (in exploration), etc

Endeavors are strong early in antiquity but most of them don't scale well in later ages

imho (for the sake of offering one possible remedy); Allow the player to choose, at their desired difficulty level, the option to disable aggressive actions. especially unprovoked or overwhelming blind warmongery.

I don't expect the only outcome to be at war on turn 5 - 105, without the option of tempering that with diplomatic counterplay.

It makes the game 'feel' like the only focus is the prepare for war from the first unit built and following up with another military unit, then another, then another. This seems less focused on variety and more focused on warmongery (as the title implies).

It was not my intention to offer a complaint without a resolution. It was my intent to restate my original 'complaint' in a way that might express my frustration and lack of understanding.

I 'feel' like I've been playing Civilization for so long, with far greater control over these things, while this iteration offers little control for a variety of play styles that I once considered the theme.

To be clear, I don't want a Civilization game without the possibility of War, that's not the point, Even barbarian hordes has some controls that allowed building & progress beyond a focus on mass spamming military units at every corner of the players territory.

I understand that this is not the approach that every player wants, but, I play Civ to challenge myself & my Civ to be better than just feral animal behavior. That's just my take. for what it's worth.

Yeah, I have a similar feeling.
Seems the diplamacy options are shallow, quite simple and a little uneffective.... Seems you never have enough "resources" to deal diplomatically with warmongers.

Diplomatic treaties must evolve alongside the progress of eras.
Whether it’s a primitive war before the Bronze Age or an ideological war in the highly developed society of the 20th century, if the only interaction possible is something like: “Give me your settlement!” “No!” “If you hit me more, I’ll give it to you!” that’s pure comedy.

You can't even demand settlements from other civ unless it's a peace treaty which sucks

Wish bartering and demands weren't removed

Bro, I think you can say things without being so aggressive. I do agree that when I think about playing Civ, I think about different ways to win, and right now, C7 feels too war-oriented.

I think adding back civ 6 great people and great works would revitalise the culture victory. The points to get these could be achieved from certain resources maybe or buildings? This would be a nice way to play peaceful

Economic victory could use more competition. Maybe monopolies from civ 6? Needing 5 instances of 5 resources to build franchises or something to win?

Scientific could be worth changing as well. I think after getting those space launch things (can’t remember their name) there should be a number of points you have to accrue before you win the game and this can be boosted by building more launchers

I don’t think there should be a peaceful way of winning the military path 🙂
