#Theological combat

I agree, it feels like a losing battle every playthrough. It just seems like busy work without a way to actually stop the conversation of your cities.
Religion is so weak right now! I honestly don’t even care about anything other than the reliquary belief because it’s too much microing to try and keep any cities with my religion.
the AI still does the missionary spam. still. Not being able to stop them, even if at war is annoying.
Have to waste so much gold/resource building to counter it.
Just let me burn the heretics! 😛
Religious combat doesn’t need to come back. It was also tedious. I would much prefer them implement religion into other aspects of the game. Some examples would be:
-
Spread religion through merchants.
-
Military (make military units able to convert by taking cities).
-
Loyalty type religious pressure.
-
Use diplomacy to convert a society.
Anything is better than needing more units running around that only convert or fight other religious units.
I honestly don’t bother with religion anymore aside from the first conversion bonuses. Once that has been obtained, I just let my city get converted to whatever religion is out there.
I enjoy religion in Civ 5 (especially with VP's tweaks to beliefs, etc)
feels fairly natural and its something you can explore strategically or just play against passively and focus elsewhere
religion is so weirdly gamey and ephemeral in 7, definitely my least favorite mechanic
all of these are great
Religion is almost only to get relics for a cultural milestones (some policy buffs too), which is why it's so easy to switch. If the way I get relics is by converting foreign cities, but I can't because the AI out produces me with anti-missionaries, then I can't get cultural milestones. The way religion is used makes it unnecessary to convert your own cities, which makes 'combat' pointless.
I agree with that too. Making changes to religion would necessitate changing the goals that lead to acquiring relics... but I hope that happens because everyone around religion is boring and mindless and bad
I wouldn't expect anything for a long while due it needing a complete overhaul, but I hope it's something devs keep in mind
I do think it's a little weird to have the cultural milestones entirely the result of deploying units that you build through production or gold, stored in buildings you build with production or gold.
I think it would help if there were more policies or civic progression unlocks that boosted the effectiveness of missionaries or made them cheaper so there's a better connection to culture production. Heck, maybe just expanding the Theology tree a bit on that front would help.
