#No edge scrolling?

It's missing and would be good to have. There's two kinda workarounds at least fore mouse only controls: left-click and drag anywhere. or use the middle mouse to center on the select tile. if you do the latter near the edge, it's probably the closest.
That's just workarounds though

I too would like edge scrolling to be added in. Kind of silly that it isn’t already.
Agree, thought I may have just missed the setting somewhere, but good to see it's not just me being stupid. Certainly want it when trying to move explorers and merchants about. I also noticed there doesn't seem to be a cancel move feature. Once you've dragged to where yu want to go, you have to move there for 1 turn before you can stop
All the games I play and while most allow the edge scroll, I swear the ones that dont have all decided on a different control scheme for moving map.... ASWD keys, right click, mid click, left click..... just give me the scroll
Been using edge scrolling with Civ for over 20 years. Baffling oversight
Do we know if edge scrolling is on their list of features to add?
i haven't seen it mentioned specifically yet. There's generally very little we know of what will be added or fixed
I have this conspiracy theory that they have a metric of "clicks" or engagement they want to fulfill for some reason and that's why so many things require extra clicking for no reason at all
Like how I have to click "repair: granary" and then actually click on the granary? lol
"look how they love our game, they click 90% more than Civ V and VI"
I’m disabled and side scrolling really helps me with my play as I have an adapted mouse. So it’s crucial for me.
Please make it optional 🙂
if that were true, the ratings would speak wonders... Civ V 'Extremely Positive' ... Civ VII 'Mixed'....
that's the joke, that they switched to using "clicks" to measure player satisfaction...
Is this discord forum the best place for feature requests or is there a better place?
I also submitted a feature request for edge scrolling via the 2K support site.
The 2k support site has a dropdown for "Questions/Feedback".
Still waiting for this basic feature.
It appears that 1.2.0 still doesn't have this essential feature. That every other modern Civilization has.
way cool, didn't know about that, thanks for sharing 👍
thanks for bumping this back up again
Please add this option asap, being disabled I stopped playing the game because of the lack of this option. Don't think this is a minor option, many disabled players need it.
Can we please use the mouse /pointer for movement across the screen - ie move to the edge of the screen and the map moves in the direction! If a a 6 + year old game like ‘1800’ why can’t we ?
Nope nope nope! Just got the patch and NO mouse edge scrolling. WTF? This is the single most frustrating part of the UI on PC.
seriously not having this is insane
So, they had time and developers to have the Scout pet the dog, but can’t add a basic UI function? Seriously messed up.
In general (for any game or piece of software):
They didn't include feature X in this patch ... is not because they can't do it, and not because they don't think it's important. It's because for any piece of large complicated software there are finite resources each development cycle, X devs, Y testers, Z hours of work hours a week, and way more important features/bug-fixes than can fit into any given schedule window. And different features take different amounts of time to implement. Also the complexity of the concept/feature does not always correlate with how long it takes to implement (some "simple" things take way more time than you'd expect, and in some lucky cases sometimes a "complicated" thing can be implemented more easily). But even a "simple" feature/change from a dev (e.g. single line of code change), can still require a LOT of human hours from other parts of the team, in particular QA/testing.
Difficult choices have to be made about what things get worked on, and it is literally impossible to make choices that will cover everything users/players want in a specific release.
So as users we can just try to advocate for the importance of a feature/change, and hope that it gets integrated into the complex decision process of roadmap/dev-cycle planning.
In particular notice that this post has the "seen" tag on it, which means that staff have seen this feedback/suggestion and it's on their radar.
Note: awareness doesn't necessarily mean agreement/plan to implement ... but in this case I imagine edge-scrolling is likely to be implemented at some point
It wouldn’t be so annoying if the current function also worked better. Right now, when I click and drag “too far” (which I still don’t know how far is too far), the map shoots across the world. This is a basic UI function that is used throughout the entire game and has been included in all recent iterations of this game. I would think it would be a priority, but don’t even know if they are considering fixing something that affects the entire game experience.
How can any developer release a strategy game without this feature in 2025? What happened with this game? When you release an alpha you have to be honest about it.
That's a valid question, and if it were developed and released as PC only originally I suspect that wouldn't have happened. That is, I suspect that their development process of aiming for day-1 cross-platform launch across PC and consoles lead to UI and UX situations that were different than it would've been were it just aimed at PC.
Note: I'm not defending the outcome, just hypothesizing the context that led to the current situation (i.e. answering the question of "how could this have happened?")
This is on their radar though, and is something they want to implement.
You're probably right. I want console players to be able to play civilization. but the negative impact these cross platform developements often have on pc versions is very annoying.
There are benefits that come along with it as well (e.g. cross-play multiplayer opportunities, cross-platform cloud saves and account progression, and maybe other ones I can't think of). And hopefully due to Firaxis' tradition of dedicated long-term post-launch continuous improvement, any shortcomings from not starting as PC only are eventually removed/addressed.
Did some research it seems civ 6 hardly had a perfect edge scrolling feature. Maybe they just know its a tricky feature and would rather not put it in undercooked and prone to breaking.
I think it can break due to upscaling, multiple screens.
I doubt they just forgot to implement it
... oh yeah, I forgot about the multi-monitor edge scrolling issues I've had in the past
It's not tricky. It's baffling how incompetent they are at implementing that feature that any other civ-like game I can think of has.
I cannot think of any other one either. In theory multiplatform cloud saves why not, a few people could benefit from it. But in practice their cloud save system is slow and limited compared to a steam cloud implementation (no auto cloud saves, only ten slots, wait time to see the saves when you open the menu). Multiplatform release don't have to be bad but it needs more work. And when you take shortcuts and your priority is grabbing the money, we end up like this.
Please keep your feedback/comments respectful. The reason any feature X is not currently implemented in the game has nothing to do with the competence of the Firaxis dev team, rather it has to do with the fact that every feature requires time and human resources to implement (AND test both the new feature's behavior as well as test to ensure no regressions on existing behaviors, i.e. not introducing new bugs), and both time and employees are unfortunately finite.
In other words there are only X developers and Y testers and Z working hours in a dev cycle, and as such only a limited number of desired features and bug fixes that can get completed and included in a patch cycle. Difficult prioritization choices have to be made, because if feature/bugfix A is scheduled to be worked on, that comes with the opportunity cost of not being able to work on feature/bugfix B.
As players we can give feedback to Firaxis about the relative importance we feel towards different features/bugs (e.g. via upvotes/discussion in these feedback posts, and upvotes on the 2K Issue Tracker) and Firaxis can incorporate that info as one of the factors that go into the complicated and thankless task of making difficult decisions about scheduling/roadmap-planning. And in the meantime we can try to wait patiently for the features we personally find most important to get implemented.
And we have limited money to pay for games that should be finished when you shell out $100+ for the Founders edition. This is not a bug fix. Someone decided to release the game without a basic UI function (however challenging that is to the developers to implement).
In any case, what roadmap did you see this on?
In any case, what roadmap did you see this on?
Apologies, in this thread I had multiple iterations of explaining essentially the same thing, and one of them I misspoke and said "it is on their radar/roadmap" and the latter half of that was a firmer claim than I should've made; I've edited that earlier statement. It is not currently on a publicly released roadmap statement, however the feature is something they are aware of and want to implement.
