The Negatives
- Minimal match creation settings compared to previous games. I really enjoyed how much customization there used to be and this is a very disappointing reversal.
- No automatic exploration. This really sucks.
- Traders, or at least whatever the unique unit for Confucius/Mississippian, will not allow me to trade or at the very least making a trade path is not obvious.
- Various graphical weirdness, such as tile outline highlights in Wonder cut scenes.
- Escape key doesn't always close windows, such as the trade routes window.
- I don't know if it was a bug, but at the very start of the game hovering over tiles wouldn't produce any tooltips about the content of the tiles and what they were. I felt like I couldn't at all make an educated decision about what was in my surroundings.
- Yields map view keeps turning off. I don't know if there is some window change causing that or if its a feature, but its obnoxious.
- The fact there is a build queue at all was not obvious. I had included a lack of build queue as an issue until I accidentally pressed another building and found out there was one after multiple hours of playing.
- The order of operations of some in your face notification splash screens was kinda out of order. I consistently get the notification of having completed a milestone BEFORE I get the notification of getting the object that completed that milestone.
- There's a lot of weird redundant notifications, such as not selecting a focus on a town every couple turns. It then forces you to go through the process of going into the town just to say that I wanted what I selected already. If I was playing on auto-end turn I can see this being even worse.
- I don't know if I missed a tooltop, but assigning Great Works/Resources wasn't intuitive. It took me a little bit to figure out it was a click on the work and then click on the slot. This feels like it could have been a draggable thing, but this is a minor thing.
- Technology queue would be nice.
Some Positives:
- The game so far has been so much less overwhelming to get into than Civ 6 was. I don't think its as simple as Civ 5, but I definitely appreciate it a lot. It felt way less information overload than when I first got into Civ 6.
- The soundtrack is really good. I've caught myself just leaning back and listening to the classical music several times.
- The premium Fog of War skin looks so nice, its a lot less claustrophobic feeling than Civ 6 was. I feel like I'm actually playing a board game now instead of just not being able to see anything.
- The progression system (Foundation?) that has been added has my interest. I appreciate there being some amount of reward for trying different things and putting effort into the diversity. My only feedback is that I kinda wish there was achievements to further incentivize it.
- Load times are so much faster than Civ 6 was. I think this also has to do with minimizing a lot of settings though which I would take back in a heart beat for more customization.
New Issues:
- Another redundant notification notifying me that I have resource slots open despite having filled all of the slots. I assume this is asking me to trade, but its still obnoxious.
- Trading on normal merchants is also broken for me.
- Not being able to do more than one of each diplomatic action because another Civ is being targeted really sucks. I would rather deal with a spy limit or something than this. It feels very unnecessarily constrained.
