After watching the cinematic short, i can honestly be in the minority of art style enjoyers as i really like the art style this game is showing, and im still fairly new to the lore of the series as im still playing the classic series to get an understanding of the series. I usually immerse myself in anything lore wise in general and what marathon has shown me is something im enjoying so far.

My heart just broke a little bit but I have to share it. Marathon 2025 is not a continuation, or a sequel, it's a reboot. We're not [as players] picking up any existing threads from the original story, and reigniting that flame as plot beats. The new game is a reboot, a reimagined retconned reincarnation of the publisher's old intellectual property. I was hoping against hope that this reboot would still be a continuation, they are not mutually exclusive. The character designs & concept art we had from the announcement trailer era REALLY fueled the hope that it COULD be a continuation, and masterfully done. All I want, is to se THAT game from the original art. Sleek military cyborgs, with black sclera and pixelated glowing irises. Faces adorned in elegant brutalist warpaint.

Okay so, im a HUGE tron fan and have been since I was 7 starting with the original and then legacy when i was 14ish, ARES is definitely a shitty reboot, it abstracts from the whole driving narrative of legacy as well as leaves massive plot hole from legacy wide open. The movie hasnt even come out yet and even in the trailers alone there are SWEEPING retcons. Its absolutely awful. I will still watch it of course but the claim that NU marathon (A continuation set 120ish years in the future) is anything like the slop disney is building with ARES, is a substantial jump of comparisons in my view.

Pretty much everything is wrong, we do not know when the events take place, dates and events do not line up neatly at all without ignoring major plot points in the trilogy. This definitely does not take place after Marathon Infinity.

The game is set in New Cascadia, the colony, one of the many locations we did not see in the original trilogy, so frankly they can make it look however they want, when the UESC Marathon map is released people can criticize the visuals. People complaining about colors have seen some Art work and maybe screen grabs of the first game, cause the trilogy is really colorful.

Anyone remotely invested in the ARG and story content can see it very much feels like Marathon, sure it is not a single player campaign so it won't feel that way, but they have done an excellent job making what we have feel like it is in the same universe as the Original games took place in.
