Using Indian for natives in America (don’t know about First Nations in Canada) is not racist. It’s mostly a generational thing, older generations are perfectly fine with just being called Indians. Younger tend to prefer more Native or Indigenous. Though I have heard it switching over to the younger set preferring Indian again. Even in legal documents, you still have Indian as being the normal way to say it. Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Country, Indian Health Service etc.

Best thing to do is to use tribal affiliation, but obviously that is not known. But when people ask if I am native I always reply with “yes, I am Chickasaw”.
