It is when it’s done well. There only a few game romances that are nuanced and represent the ups and downs of a relationship well enough to feel engaging for me. Jack from mass effect is the only one I can think of right now, which is a shame because she’s very much not my type

Yes there are few well made romances in the industry which is why I feel so underserved. Baldur's Gate was a good step up in many ways but the story of the game inevitably takes precedence, which I feel impacts on the romances directly

Thing is, if I were to make a game, the story would have to give enough space for such systems to work organically and not feel contrived by the limitations of the games progress. Too many games feel like romances are formed due to circumstance rather than genuine affection

I think this is heavily affected by the kind of character you like to play. Wyll and Karlach are good options for good characters, but the game's development made them turn out severely undercooked. Gale is very neutral heavy in the sense that despite him being considered a good character, it is not what defines his life as a character. Laezel and minthara are just plain evil and I don't get near them with a twelve meter pole. Astarion and shadowheart are for chaotic character, with both being able to be pushed to either side of the good or bad spectrum by the end of the game. I personally like shadowheart a lot because while yes she is annoying at the start, you end up learning things by the second half that turn her into a completely different (and better) person if you want

My problem with the characters, if you ignore the obvious under baked parts due to either rushed development or underwelming writing for some characters, the game's pacing itself does not allow for an in depth exploration of their stories, and once you're done with them, nothing else happens. Rpgs in general suffer from this strange case of "quest over, now begone" that means once a character's personal quest is done, it's like they turn into these blank boards where nothing happens
