MIDA, as I understand it, was originally the Mars government. After selling Deimos to Earth, the UESC had them almost completely eradicated. The remaining MIDA operatives essentially formed a radical anti-government group, which is why the MIDA we work for is so punk-rock

in the classic games, humans were already colonizing asteroids, and also already using asteroids as "ships" within Sol (just put them into the desired orbit to pass between Earth and Mars regularly), so it made a lot of sense to just colonize an asteroid (which the moons of Mars basically are) and put an engine on it to make a colony ship.

in the new game, building a full ship of its own and then reshaping a moon into a shell around it makes no goddamn sense, but they did it anyway because I guess it looks cool

It talks about how our first interaction with 'alien intelligence' will likely come from our own planet, not beyond the stars.
