pretty confident that teleportation is actually the same tech as FTL, just can't do big things or long distances yet
can't blame bungie, they didn't know in the 90s that artificial gravity via antimatter wasn't possible
because it isn't, apparently.
and i'm certain they didn't stuff a massive ball of neutronium at the "bottom" of the vessel
it means you are one of the chosen few. 7 is darker.
FTL also requires negative mass (which it was thought that antimatter might have) so in a world with FTL antigrav is no less realistic
and by stuffing the ship through deimos that means what little gravity there is would be radial from the center. rooms would be built like underground caves and not straight like ship decks
they supposedly at least figured out a theory that doesn't involve negative mass and exotic matter https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/a69663990/scientists-say-physical-warp-drive-now-possible/
so that's a start
also as much as I miss the old marathon look sometimes, the 3d-printed everything and prefabs makes perfect sense for a space colonisation effort owned nearly entirely by megacorps and made to be easily repairable, replicable and expandable by the colonists in question
and by the 2700s i imagine most if not all human manufacturing efforts is nearly entirely printed and automated
following that to the original paper, they only show that subluminal warp drives are possible. so, still a cool new method of propulsion, but not FTL.
you feed the factory materials, and it prints what you want. the profit is in choosing materials and schematics
hey, getting the travel time down to within-human-lifetime is much better than nothing!
even if it just means trips in our local system are real quick
Assuming theyāre doing a warp drive and didnāt come up with some other sci fi explanation
all known FTL solutions require negative mass, including wormholes, which seems like what Marathon FTL is using, as things travelling FTL "fold" from one place to another, and teleportation is described likewise (which is why I think it's just a crappier version of the same tech -- and so are FTL comms, just folding single particles large distances, instead of larger objects shorter distances)
I know they do, but that isnāt preventing them from using a fictional thing
tangentially, I've actually been working on a real physics model lately that unexpectedly explicates why negative energy would be necessary for any backward time-travel (and therefore FTL) solution, and also is impossible: because on this model what "negative energy" would have to mean is reversal of time, which on this model is not just physically impossible but logically incoherent.
Like a burger
Unless thereās no actual arrow of time and everythingās predetermined
Though technically ftl particles would have imaginary mass
I am laplaceās demon and I endorse this statement
Based
well, stable time loops would be a solution that would not break causality if backward causation were possible, they would just be infinitesimally improbable.
my model renders backward causation and negative energy even more logically impossible than that, because its core principle from which everything else derives is that time is a partial-ordering of the state space by informational embedding, so "moving backward in time" is incoherent because nothing is "moving in time" at all, time is just a relationship between states. a stable time loop would thus have to involve infinite re-embedding of states within themselves. and out of that model it falls (skipping tons of detail here) that energy density in a given region is the amount of change occurring in that region, so negative energy would be "negative change" occurring, but change is not signed, so at most change can occur counter to prevailing patterns (which is what antimatter works out as), but that's still a positive amount of change, and so positive energy.
infinity is strange enough by introducing time travel
all this talk makes me depressed for humanity. we're stuck in this star system aren't we
not if I can help it
are you gonna go into bioscience as well after your space engineering degree
just to send mjolnirs on the ship š
Do you mean antimatter as in the positively massed particles with opposite charged or antimatter as a negative/imaginary mass concept
what's to stop us from building larger space stations in moon, earth and martian orbit, and underground colonies on the moon and mars anyway?
supposedly venus isn't even that bad to live on but only at the right altititude
the former
Pressure is the issue on Venus
it's the fact that change is unsigned that prevents the former from equating to the latter
venus is a massive pressure cooker yeah (+ a whole lotta pressure cooker seasoning on the floor)
mars is just barren on every aspect including ozone and gravity š
you couldn't get much other than underground spaces to build hydroponics farms
and isn't europa a whole lotta cold and some potential cthulu ass eldritch horror underneath lol
Iām not sure partial ordering by informational embedding as a definition for time fits with gen relativity
something that at least looks a lot like general relativity up to extremal limits actually falls naturally out of it
Also anti matter wouldnāt indicate whether change is unsigned or not bc antimatter is still positive mass just different charges, I donāt think itās relevant there
The notion of actual negative energy would be tachyons
Physics
what's what got me started on this whole physics project. I wasn't even trying to do physics. I was doing philosophy. thinking about useful ways of conceptualizing time. and then I noticed that a lot of known physics seems to be just automatically entailed by that simple principle.
I can link you to my full writeup about it on my other server if you like.
nerds...
Id like that thanks. And i agree the philosophy can track but the mathematics has several things that deviate from standard logic
my point is that change being unsigned means that time-reversal (which is equivalent to CP reversal under CPT symmetry) is just a different pattern of change, not some kind of "un-change" that would equate to negative energy, and therefore antimatter does not have negative energy.
has anyone else heard a meowing on dire marsh, algae ponds? my whole crew spent 10 mins following it down towards the anomaly but couldnt find anything?
bingus spotted
was prolly bingus
BUT WHERE?!?!
better start looking
i genuinely searched every single container and area but no bingus
Yeah but I donāt think anti matter having negative energy is a question though, itās still matter just with different quark compositions/charges, nor is antimatter theorized to have any kind of time reversal
i did find an inactive bingus on perimeter
oh where??
just sittin in a tube
I ransacked the place and didn't find it once š š
they're a biopet. you can't bring real animals on the marathon so a bioprinted cat makes perfect sense
The question of actual time reversal only comes up when something does have imaginary mass. While antimatter definitely doesnāt, it doesnāt mean there couldnāt be some exotic matter that does
Feynman famously reckons antiparticles as time-reverse particles, and it was long thought until experiments disproved it that antimatter might have negative mass
anyway here is my thing, it's my bedtime, I can't engage in this at length right now #1016953170074800128 message
feel like there's always some god species or entity that allows science fantasy to happen in every bungie title lol
forerunners and paracausality now the jjaro
Yeah but the notion of time reversal particles being electrons vs positrons etc. isnāt anything considered in modern physics. Itās known that positrons work just like electrons and decay the same way but theyāre just opposite charge
I like it
But maybe itās ur wakey time if time has no arrow
i think it was in the room with the long table in north relay
random deluxe drop so just gotta hope you get lucky
my snip and sketch isnt working otherwise i'd send a screenshot
that's not at all contrary to anything I'm talking about
oh it's deluxe
pain
yarrpp
Well my question was just why are we discussing antimatter as the basis for/against time reversal change if itās known thatās not the case
Wat is God but all the experiments u quietly swept under the rug when submitting 2 Nature
The relevant type of matter would be theoretical tachyons that would have an imaginary mass
Is there anyone on this chat who isnāt a scientist lmfao very strange chat
but like that's eventually explainable no?
jjaro's an actual species that managed to achieve ftl lol
light and dark's a universal force
forerunners are...forerunners idk halo š
or you mean stuff like warframe's infested and whatnot?
Neural physics
antimatter came up as an aside about why negative energy would work out to not be possible under my model; the closest possible thing would just work out to be antimatter
please stop pinging me tonight, I've been trying to get to bed for two hours now and people keep messaging me and I'm getting very upset
Ok
been reading the codex log for Nucal, what's up with the drinkable burgers ? Looks like the shipments played a part in the colony downfall
They are burgers u drink
yeah but there's like a survivor log that mentions weird stuff about them
like scratch marks inside packages
That's crazy
Oh fun I havenāt found that yet
yeah the log is cool ! It's a post colony survivor's log
oh what the hell scratch marks in the packages???
dude is starving
unprocessed mealworm burgers š
Makes me think we might need a spoiler channel, some people might have liked to find out themselves
I only got to the bonsai audio logs this is new info š
I don't mind spoilers but maybe yeah
or gentleman's rule of spoiler consent
Now that I think of it again it doesn't make sense, everybody's progression is so different, how to separate spoilers from non spoilers ? Might be impossible
You can always ||do this||
will do next time
Honestly i won't know things until i find them. But also some stuff is rng... Like durandal talking to runners
So you may never get it
just bring drinkable burgers in the exfil and it unlocks some nucal commercials, or a new employee talking to a senior employee, which is really cool ! It tells us that they didn't care about|| food quality control, and barely passed the sanity checks||
The first one calling them "sacrifices" and not being ashamed of it is just wild
I knew nucaloric wasn't as benevolent as they led on
im so hyped to see the compilers in cryo archive
do we know is cryo archive will be avaiable on launch yet?
No I donāt think so
Lfg to play with dm me
Yes it will be available at launch
Originally when it was to release in sept, cryo archive was not going to be ready to ship. The extra 6 months of dev time = we now have cryo archive at launch
they posted a tweet jan 13th that says itās locked at launch
but like idk if that means locked locked like not in the game or if itās like locked behind level or map
It's locked but available. It's in game but perhaps certain parameters have to be met to access it.
You can't just start the game and just try cryo archive immediately, it's a high level area so perhaps a certain faction level or progression or buy in s necessary to get up onto the marathon ship.
W
Honestly it really is a huge W, every day i am glad they gave this game more time to cook
The more I play the more I enjoy the game
I've compiled all the story/cutscenes/priority contract cutscenes together in a video for people interested in the lore if i'm able to post here and anyones interested?
I would definitely be interested, and i know people will be as well
Im unsure if im able to post in this chat but its in the zone footage request channel under everything else if you wanna take a look
You can post links they just will not embed
Sick thenk u
All Server Slam Cutscenes /Priority contracts cutscenes
I'll check it later
Theres like 1 clip at the start where i go cyac my beloved but other than that there is 0 audio interfering LMFAO
Ggs on getting all priority contracts done before server slam ended
I might make it through nucal but not traxus
I got them all done last night before i got off, happy to help in runs if im available
Thinking of making tutorials for the beginner contracts assuming that theyre gonna be the same for the full release
the lore is so dope in this game
Could immediately tell General D Reed was arthur morgan lmao
So much of the hints get me interested. The "gift basket", Arachne, etc
Does anyone know what to do with an encrypted key I found?
Mida is just inherently off putting to me tho
The "rebel rah system bad just smash stuff and burn it down with a vague vision of something better afterwards" is so cringe to me
How does the new marathon connect to infinity, durandal and the original?
Do we even know if the Pfhor still attacked the Marathon and colony in 2026 Marathon because I'm not seeing anything related to that in the codex stuff so far
Likely the 7th timeline of infinity
I wish I didn't know what that mean't lol
Technically nobody on earth knows about the pfhor so maybe that's why hey haven't shown up yet in codex or lore
I hope we get to fight the Pfor in full release
You do or you donāt know what that means?
If we don't fight pfhor, what i would absolutely adore is going into cryo storage and seeing their dead, decayed bodies on the ground in places
But we never see one alive
I am farmilar with the shenanigans in infinity
God damn bungie and number 7
But also we have no idea bc they're dead which means they were there
Sorry.
Keep in mind the UESC have been here and could have cleaned up and tried to hide the attack
id be very surprised if they made a lore discussion tab if they didnt at least have plans to get into aliens, durandals already talking to players about the waves in random runs
Oh tru tru
I think the Lore of Arc and Marathon are really cool, it was the stories and environments of the games that drew me in and hooked me
how do i get xp quickly?
contracts
i wanna see a s'pht
I heard the fastest way is to kill every ad you see, every player, and complete contracts
How are the runners transported on world?
Probably the reverse of how they're extracted
molecular dissassembly/reassembly
TELEPORTATION
How does the loot survive the process (theoretically)
bro, I love every faction that is in this game
they are aesthetically so cool
Whole game has a mood
yeah
But I'm not a fan of that one runner with the arm gun's design.
Feels like a weird stand out imo
the traxus one?
Vandal
Just out of curiosity, would anyone here think people would benefit from contract tutorials/locations?
i'm doing the quest just to see the cutscenes, this is an amazing motivation
Are our runners humans, or, originally humans who just got our brains uploaded to the cloud?
didnt they have that this playtest, you go thru a little tutorial on how a run work
Our runners were humans at one point, but uploaded there brain to a data centre under sekiguchi genetics that create the shells for our runners to go onto tau ceti without suffering the physical complications of the environment or death
And now weāre in a gorrilion dollars of medical debt and need to loot stuff to pay it
So what happened to the human bodies?
we are (allegedly) human consciousnesses that are owned by cyberacme
Probably tossed em
nucal food probably
Thatās what makes our burgers so delicious
To upload our brains we had to die physically and the brain matter gets uploaded the minute after death or something like that
Imo vandal in particular drifts just a tad too far from the neo military aesthetic of the others.
If I had the option I'd like to have the top of all of their faces covered.
But that's like...
A me thing yk?
Taste.
Yeah this is thanks to joe Ziegler
she seems more apart of the low life crowd that is just in it for the money
Who?
When introducing friends who havve no clue on the lore/dont care about the lore, there biggest complaint was not knowing where to go or what to do even after the tutorial. Im wanting make content for the game for fun to help other new players or people struggling with contracts and such
Game director who came in and made the game more hero shooter esque
I'm not really a fan of making them characters tbh...
When vandal was still an individual character she was a Martian freedom fighter
That and them just shitting on the game for the sake of shitting on the game
Just general idea of classes.
Not everyone is gonna be good at doing TF2
I'd rather be just generic mook.
Plus offers more customisation potential.
Faceless marine supremacy
EXACTlY
And have male/female body options for each shell.
from the trailer tho its def the same person in the shells, glitch customized hers several times but they kept the core features and voice so she wouldn't go insane
marathon?
Yeah but they have retconned that sheās an actual individual glitch
marathon
when was that? i havent seen any official stuff that makes it seem otherwise

It might be more appropriate to say that the "personality matrix" that the appearance and vocals of Vandal is based off of, was once a real person. But it's unclear whether she's still alive or active.
That's how I see it, anyway
guys im marathonning rn
Which shell gives off the most āMercā vibe to you guys
im running til i marathon
The thing that bothers me most is the weird spike things and her jacket arms being used as tails
Disappointing we don't see any Mjlonir security cyborgs
i honestly think we'll see them in later sections of the Marathon
Wasnāt there only like 10 tho
I wanna kill some bobs
UESC could have made more.
Be a functional equal to the player.
not yet
Not lore question but beta go through most of tomorrow as well right? Trying to hit LVL 30, not sure the best way to go about it tho (sorry for misusing channel, all the other ones are so busy)
Personal fav designs present so far are destroyer and assassin.
But kinda wish I could cover up his head with a helmet instead of the hood.
And be subject to his weird nubbly forehead.
it goes until 10am PST /1pm EST monday
I presume those nubly bits are for his camo?
Aw crap, so today is basically last day then
yeah for sure
I donāt want the beta to end lol, those few days of waiting for the game are gonna be slow
My plan is to just consume as much content as I can and go through clips I got of the game when the test is over
ah it'll be okay. luckily i have things to do that will pass the time
Kinda disappointed that the marathon we got wasn't yk...
Akin to Doom 2016 reviving the franchise and continuing with the sec officer.
But more brutal and violent and expanding further on the originals mechanics with a mix of tactical stuff and high speed action.
Doom 2016 like.
but adjacent. Like... Like Wolfen new order
Hell even has dual weilding lol
Hell even use the new art design and stuff
Missed opportunity imo
eh, im kinda over thinking of it like that, its a tired line of thought. this game is really good and the more i play the more i dont want it to be a pve single player game
I feel like both ways they couldve gone wouldve been an amazing game lore wise, the extraction shooter makes some sense with the story and with it being Bungie making the game and being known for live service games
its a very unique experience that i cant get in any other game and that is good for me
I can't deny that.
a remaster of the old games would be amazing though but i doubt that will happen
i think bungie so far is pulling off the story in a way that keeps it engaging... and we know there will be cutscenes. we just dont know why yet
Or remake
a lot of the game is 'why' and im hoping that with the full release we will discover why. but once thats done realistically, what else would there be to explore?
thats my main worry
I think we're thinking abt this wrong.
We could have had both.
Hell have the current marathon lead into a main sequel or something idk
same old april 2025 complaint yawn
I dont think its a complaint as much as a what couldve been honestly
idk if you looked at the codex but like, that is a very huge amount of stuff to unlock
and apparently cryo archive will be locked on release... which means we have to find a way to get up there
theres going to be a lot to do
Yeah you are right actually, kinda forgot about the codex when i typed that
the beta is just a slice of it. the first few hours of the game itself
it just feels like a shortsighted suggestion when bungie's known to absolutely cramp their game with lore lol
i think this type of game will familiarize a bigger audience w the base lore than any story reboot wouldve, its heady, almost too heady for modern gamers
but what i mean is just the after. Are they gonna make new lore after the fact or are they gonna explore different lanes within the same lore again
including the codex
The vidoc and everything showed theyāre no longer āheroesā but theyāre now general shell models sekiguchi produces. The line of models is their class name (i.e. Thief) and then series (i.e. icon) and their personality matrices based off of people who fit each specialty
Iām not sure itās one individual person. When they talked about destroyer they specifically said his voice was modeled after many people, I assume the same goes for the others
I mean personally im in love with the idea of the extraction shooter vibe, ignoring a story point of view ive been wanting an extractionshooter that isnt tarkov level heavy and combat that isnt arcraiders level if that makes sense
but with the story it just makes it so much more worth running in the game and gives a so called mission to each player, everyone can explore what they want to know about
Ive completed the cheeseburger codex now so i get to learn about that LMFAO
we already got that via contracts and codex yeah
hi guys
I'm glad that Bungie chose to innovate, try something new, something they're excited about it, and also keep it focused. Scope creep was a huge problem in Destiny.
I don't think Marathon was ever meant to be "the next big thing" from Bungie, but more of a B-tier project compared to Destiny or Halo. IIRC they had almost a dozen projects in incubation before Sony told them to focus on this one
i don't understand but what are you all talking about
Marathon
Marton
oh thank you you guys are the only one that tried to interact with me
ššæ
Well, it's certainly a busy server. Chat goes by real fast, things get missed.
We're just discussing the lore and setting of the game here. It can be a little bit complicated!

compared to the rest of the server, this channel is pretty chill.
what is the lore i don't know that because i joined just yesterday
where do you wanna start?
Hidden Xperia has videos on the og marathon games from the 90s I recommend. For the groundwork you really only need to know background and marathon 1 lore but the others will definitely come into play.
JakeTheAlright is the guy for NuMarathon lore on yt
TLDR humanity sends a big ship called the marathon into space to establish a colony on Tau Ceti IV. They lose contact with it (spoilers, everyone died for a few reasons). In this game you try to profit from the colony remains and discover what happened
And bingus
If you hadn't seen the cinematic trailer yet, it gives a good feel for the world and setting IMO
https://youtu.be/fvbEnWLRo1s
has part 2 of the ARG been dropped? or did the community find that it was a fake?
I mean stuff has been going for several weeks, and thereās some more stuff rn people are working on
Oh I asked this in the art channel but ig I should ask it here:
Has anyone tried shooting a bingus? Not that I condone it but I am curious if itās possible
Let's be honest: Marathon is really not as popular as your examples :p A soft reboot wouldn't make sense financially.
People would call it a doom reskin
What they have done here is something cool with the storytelling and hardcoreish extraction gameplay
Yes
i disagree, one possibilitie doesn't exclude the other, bungie already tried to adapt Destiny to other medias, why not do it with Marathon too? I'm personally enjoying a lot the new one, i think they are in the right direction
It's super hardcore
My ass is getting WHOOPED by some of these UESC the devs must have been gleefully twirling their mustaches as they tuned and tuned the AI š½
The fuckers straight up perform squad maneuvers and flank me it's so sick
One robot even punched me straight out a window
Ran into a Gold shielded UESC spawn the other day. It ended up whiping us
Dude when I first began on like my 3rd contract (with random team) a Ghost surprised us and absolutely demolished
Genuinely I love how brutal the enemies are to fight, gives it real stakes compared to a ton of other games
Always have to be on my toes ready for any insanity

am i crazy or, did i think that i would be siding with 1 or 2 factions for their ideologies? but actually, i level them all and dont have to pick at all because their "identity" is actually just my skill tree?
anyone wanna play? https://discord.com/channels/616545475293741056/1477721817048285184
Correct
we're kinda like a mercenary picking contracts, shrug
I'm speed running to the Self revive unlock on launch.
Like Arc raiders the lore doesn't really make sense. Arc you "Knock out" players and then all show up in the same city after. And in Marathon you are working for hostile factions but still have to be beamed from a mothership.
Unless you're just being "beamed" in from some random place?
thats exactly what im saying, the way bungus played up your personality attached to a faction made me think that it would be like the arc raiders streamer faction war, not, damn near faceless factions that are just stepping stones
Well the Arc wars are just "Skin" wars. We coudl do the same in Marathon... But everyone shoots first in this game. I have yet to have a neutral engagement in prox chat
You get faction skins when you extract with their free kits
has durandal been mentioned at all in the game yet
yeah, i think im just seeing if anyone else has this same frustration as me, the game doesn't facilitate that kind of interaction at all, and im really sad it doesn't, and i was just really hoping that the factions would mean more to us the players than simply a skill tree and trader.
Not mentioned by name but he has an rng chance of talking to the player
how?
He intercepts comms when you infiltrate
Can someone give me like a quick rundown as to what is going on lore wise?
what if i just got something that may be nothing, but it feels like something
Yeah Arcs unique reception, especially that first 2 weeks spoiled everyone.
spoiled everyone... god thats sad to hear
so i stumbled upon a reddit post reguarding an encounter with what looked like a uesc ghost disappearing into thin air
Ghosts do camo. And they will play back runner shell voicelines to bait you into coming near
Ghosts esp are scary af
the video itself, they vanish into thin air, and the player sits for abit checking
this comment damn near stripped the idea of this game having more soul. taking off the rose coloured glasses hurts.
Marathon goes out of contact, the message the AIs and PC send in the OG games gets to Earth and the UESC and several powerful corps send out an expedition to see what happened to the colony. So hundreds of years later this expedition hits TC4. The corps have somehow snuck runners, which are human minds digitized and stored, into the system along with their artificial shells, where these minds are downloaded for ops. The runners do jobs for whoever and act as dirty workers for the corps. That's basically it?
and i decided to ask around in general, asked a dev and they said this.
no images here but i posted it in the art chat
are the older marathon games cannon or is it a different like world to this one?
Hidden Xperia and Jake the alright vids for lore on yt
Actually it's been on my mind since I discovered the franchise a few short years before the announcment of the new game.
Totally canon, except for maybe certain timelines in Infinity? But that game is confusing AF anyway so
yes and no, they did a multiple timeline/universe thing in the 3rd game i think?
Interesting
Jake the Alright has a great playlist of lore info videos from him and other folks, def second that suggestion
This is still a soft reboot tho.
My idea would be to bascially go. Fuck it and go big with the story and single player.
I also like the new one.
But I'd like to have that. And a single player outing as well.
Feels like they're kinda dumb sometimes.
G2
Knife is your friend against the clankers
It is indeed, but I miscommunicated. I meant more like a solo campaign soft reboot.
Better to have a multiplayer game for financial success these days
If the game is a success I'd love it if they expand the universe with solo campaigns
People are itching for single player games.
They will never not be in demand.
Plus the opportunity for iterative sequels.
wear the hat of an executive :p Multiplayer games make more money
Circumstantially.
Not everyone can be cod or fornite.
Hell cod isn't even cod anymore
It's some. Diseased thing.
Though.
Marathon did have it's own multiplayer. But that was just deathmatching I think.
There was also that map editor tool... wasn't it also called forge?
Like I said before.
We can have both.
Imo we should have both.
Everyone is satisfied.
And it's more potential profit.
people dont love singleplayer shooters nowadays
Do you think the P'hfor will make a return?
yes the spht will already be in cryo so I assume they will sooner or later
This game isn't remotely similar to either of those tbh
You miss the point.
Do I?
Gaming, just lilke other "Golden gooses" in life is suffering from greed. The ones in power can never have enough after they've tasted it, and always end up killing the very thing that got them there. Funny enough, Marathon feels like an attempt to go full send on an idea for once. Art,lore, music. And people are so programmed to consume the slop they hate it because it requires a minimal level of learning to enjoy. The biggest threat to Marathon is the exe saying it's not laying big enough eggs.
wym?
so how does this marathon tie into the original?
wym what do i mean
Agreed
Prolly timeline 7 of infinity
nuMarathon takes place almost a century after the pfhorās first attacks on the marathon, they may be long gone by now or maybe some splinter faction may show up
lol
People aren't used to games requiring effort, skill, time, and reading comprehension to play @fiery valley
thats specific, any reason?
yes the spht will already be in cryo so I assume they will sooner or later
I was told by someone else.
Sad thing is that their subconscious is aware of their weakness and they lash out nonetheless.
Otherwise you got the corperations like traxus
And possibly Durandal terminals.
There are marathon 1 lore terminals across the maps.
Yes, prime example of this is any popular game's Steam page š actual cesspool
im ngl i think Marathon (as of modern marathon) would struggle to fit into many other genres because of how desolate the "action environment" is, it's just tau ceti iv
Also I disagree.
you can disagree but statistically people are more social than ever and want more social interaction than ever before
There are also people who want a linear experience
sure but its unfortunately a shrinking minority
For my money I'd rather the security if a single player that I can always got back to.
Than a multiplayer that's gonna be shut down in 15 years.
Yeah I'm among the skg crowd.
destiny sort of almost got it right for a post-lockdown audience but it was the execution and upkeep that failed and not the fundamental concept of how the game handles the narrative from a gameplay pov
I mean I really didn't want the first game's first story to come back and replace the one I fucking paid for.
hi I think it was me
7th timeline, m.inf's a doozy
Prolly. Thanks.
Shits nutty
so do you know? what is it?
(The red war)
Nobody knows for sure. Yet.
We need to wait for full release.
tldr at the end of m2 the pfhor blew pu the s'pht homeworld's sun and unleashed some eldritch reality-warping entity that the jjaro contained forever ago and the universe is now doomed
m.inf is us going through timelines (dreamscapes) in search of one where we survive
kinda like marvel's what-ifs but with a single protag
Also the sec officer is imortal now or smt.
basically yeah
ok
live service games are everywhere because they let people find "a home" in a place that continuously grows but maintaining that is an ever looming behemoth as seen with d2 - there comes a point where different stories need to be told and the destiny narrative team struggled with that for too long and interest teetered out;
something like Marathon without a timeline skip - which without reason would suck - couldnt really benefit from a narrative game, like Destiny, because its whole allure is based on the mystery of something happening in real time
and in the 7th timeline we find a jjaro AI that durandal merges called thoth who's obsessed with equilibrim and the combined AI devises a plan to blow up a defunct jjaro facility that unleashes a blackhole that eats up the wrkncacnter, universe saved
Any new ARG stuff?
and as devs stated every game did happen so this is the 7th timeline
the way marathon handles timelines is so wacky, at what point do they become non-canonical
Okay but they very often fail at meeting the basic standards.
New marathon at least works pretty great.
so its the good ending timeline?
mhm
and we're now experiancing the aftermath of that
one where sol and humankind hasn't met the pfhor yet
Seemingly.
Can't wait to wack some bobs
but durandals merged with thoth at this point?
yep
that's why durandal's not the cocky AI we thought him to be in this timeline and instead a cryptic one
The BOBS are gone, long gone.
and a bigger hint being thoth loved poetry
But sensless murder
very gone I assure you
ok so hes on the Marathon itself?
nope, somewhere wandering the stars until the end of the universe on his little boomer maybe
likely taken interest on us runners currently
so whats he potentially doing communicating with us on tau ceti iv
We hear him in the cinematic trailer.
we have no idea
Ozzymandus quote
and is he who becomes god? yknow "escape will make me god"?
popular theory being we managed to transcend death via biomata and that caught his attention to humankind again
Most likely thing is he's gonna try and replicate the events of marathon with us in some way.
it's a durandal quote that ultimately became directed to the sec-officer as he said "you are destiny" to us near the end of m.inf
hm
i know this may be a reach, but what purpose would showing hallucinations/ appearing to us mean/ showing us stuff mean?
gonna need to specify hallucinations lol
Every time I think abt how bungie took it away from me. The good fucking story. I get fuckin mad lol.
there was a whole blue ghost thing, dissapeared into thin air, i asked a dev, they said that "maybe its what durandal wanted you to see"
Luckily seems like they leaned hard into making good detailed lore for Marathon
i know i might be inserting my own experiances abit much but i feel like its a cool thing and i wanna follow up on it
where did that appear?
the ghost?
yeah
ok where do i go from SLOTZ once i solve the puzzles? anyone know?
perimiter station?
sorry south relay not station
anyone trynna play
appeared in the middle of a pre broken window, disappeared in less then a second, not my encounter mind you, came across it on reddit
im just falling down the rabbit hole of it all
i guess its not really my experiance either
still, think its interesting
trynna play?
are the rooks 'runner controlled' or are they considered part of the uesc? they fight the AI so i'm not sure
well you are a runner so runner controlled
runner controlled, cuz you have to activate the UESC cloak, if you were you wouldnt need it
i assumed so, just wanted clarification bc i deadass couldn't find anything on it and the voice sounds mechanized instead of organic like the shells, thx boss :)
anyone figure out any good new lore during the play test?
The anomaly is a time distortion. Causing rapid mutations in wild life, plant life, and even cellular mitosis. The bodies we see in the anomaly are people who got too close and stayed too long being evovled beyond physical being. I think, and this is just from the logs and what I've seen, Tau Ceti is placed on some kind of Quantum plane that is rupturing.
So whatās the new arg revealed?
Bro thereās no shields in the armory? these corporations need to get it together. š
NuCal sells em
Hello everyone, I need some help with this challenge: Hit a hostile and a crew member with a single Reboot+ activation
Nucal eats people, technically personal data breaches and data harvesting is a massive issue, tau ceti 4 was mainly chosen bc it is very similar to earth human life but distinct enough to requite separate plant types, personality and thought data buying Is illegal, Ai still doesn't have rational agency, there's more or less "human remains" than there were colonists, the Ai of the colony is dormant, the anomaly is giving people hallucinations and psychological issues, I also heard mutations and time speeding up from another person, Ai was found hallucinating voices and a presence and saying strange things, rapancy is like a depressive episode or mania, "UESC committing war crimes is nothing new. Return the favour", the data wall was added to perimeter along side the hauler, main points of similarity is that both perimeter and die marsh are points of interest regarding the anomaly, the anomaly may hold an alien intelligence that is attempting to communicate.
Seemingly lore points to the emergence of the anomaly causing the initial disappearances and problems of tau ceti iv, and we're being sent specifically to investigate everything around that
Also somehow, telesto has returned
Its a quote Durandal said to the Security Officer in that it was his main obsession. He wanted to escape the "big crunch" when the universe closes.
Telesto would have quite the utility
So I've heard
Durandal was obsessed with Immortality. He pointed out in his three candles speech the limited nature of human life. "The candles burn out for you. I am free". So to someone like him the only thing threatening death would be the universes closure.
Ok
Correction. Infinity takes place in a different timeline than 2 in which Durandal is a bit late in racing the Pfhor fleet and the invasion of the Spht Homeworld goes a bit differently so the Pfhor are able to deploy the Trih Xeem. This is obvious when you look at the epilogue to 2 has no mention of Durandal being Merged like he is at the end of infinity. Also the ending of Infinity is the Wārkncacnter being re-contained with the help of the lost Spht tribe, back inside the sun where it belongs.
I think you should scroll down
Also the Wārkncacnter was contained at the end of Infinity with the help of the lost Spht tribe. So the Universe isn't doomed per-say. That doesn't mean whatever's on Tau Ceti 4 couldn't redoom the Universe. Important note: There is more than one Wārkncacnter. Including one that was underneath South America and took a Nuclear blast to stop it from waking up.
if PtD's even canon in marathon that is
also just please read what I wrote after lmao
liquid cheeseburger is people!! š± *gets dragged away
we don't need redundant info
scratch marks inside the packages btw š
nucal did the most basic of sterilization checks
Remember that PID (Pathways into Darkness) is a part of the Marathon Universe and the Dreaming God in that game IS a Wārkncacnter.
anyone got the last anomaly sample b codex entry?
the night patrol one
also seems like they put anyone that was talking about the anomaly and its effects into quarantine, because everyone wanted to keep the effects of the anomaly hush hush
anyone figure out what to do after getting past these sliding puzzles in the arg
PID reboot when bungie......
zero official confirmation btw š
Also iirc the W'rkncacnter is sort of a thing in Myth as well
Bungie could reacquire Myth or spiritual spinoff the setting down the line perhaps
yeah but like the same archetypical eldritch horror doesn't mean the exact same entity
all we got are connections with no confirmation
easter eggs at most
just a curiosity, this new Marathon is a reboot or a sequence of the old ones?
every game of the old trilogy did happen
these corporation like NuCaloric already existed in the old one?
nope, they're only in numarathon
but you can pretend they also did exist since it's practically a massive detailing of the universe
"who makes the terminals" "who makes food and architecture" such and such
numarathon takes place a few hundred years after the classic trilogy, the prevailing theory I've seen is this is one of the timelines from the last game as (as far as we know) certain events didn't happen.
cool
interesting
Yeah, marathon infinity is weird
there's aliens too yeah?
yes, that's the main enemy
i just know the red one that fly
The compiler, right
yep yep
not prevailing, it happened
judging by all the cues that's been shared on socials and all that
rn the corporations AI there are my favorite characters
they remind me a lot the NHPs from Lancer
thoth loved poetry and durandal without the merge's supposed to be an extremely cocky AI but here he is š
and the colony would've been "nuked to bedrock"
Thoth is that one who said that poem in the cinematic?
I am excited for the return of the archetypical extremely catty and completely insane AI
No, Durandal
nope, thoth's a dormant jjaro AI that durandal found and merged with in the final timeline of m.inf
are they the main villains?
jjaro are not
wait, it's that timeline? I thought Durandal had popped back to earth/Leela sent a message in that timeline
think of them as halo's forerunners
Traxus sort of existed, and a few of the weapons manufacturers are still around from the original game.
oh yeah traxus with trax IV on mars
I'm...not too sure?? but given how things turned out it might as well be
Like Traxus is a "retcon" of Traxus IV, but there always had to be someone responsible for their creation.
cyac too
MIDA
There is no "reboot" when it comes to the Marathon Universe. We are all on the Garden of Forking paths here. Infinity made that pretty explicit down to a meta level.
MIDA aren't a corpo though. Their interests in the Numarathon are related to their original conspiracy aboard the Marathon ship.
out of the new corps only sekgen and nucal didn't exist in the old trilogy, neither did arachne
I'm most interested by the new mural in the latest ARG.
Right, I meant that in the sense they're a pre-existing entity
The three figures correspond with the three AI that were aboard the Marathon.
it genuinely might be a geocache lol
i think you guys really would love Lancer RPG lore, reminds a lot Marathon sometimes
Yknow what I meant pff
I've played Lancer before and it is amazing.
yeahh, the NHPs stuff is very cool
RA and the like.
I'm curious about how they're approaching the timeline with Numarathon.
I don't even know if Durandel went back to Earth in this contunity, though I guess you could argue his cryptic message in the opening cutscene was a message.
Does anyone know how to get twitch sponsor kit from twitch drops?
I know. I'm just pointing out that if they did do that it would probably go pretty differently from the original like how they're doing shit with Marathon right now. It would also probably be scary as fuck. I mainly do Solos rn and that shit is a horror game and PID was explcitly horror or horror adjacent in theme.
It's supposed to drop with the emblem, but we don't have any of the drops in-game yet.
If you check claimed, it says SMILEYworm Emblem and Kit.
i mean like i see only 4 rewards but not sponsor kit
It says it after the emblem.
Emblem & Kit.
oh thx i see now
They really wore they're lovecraft influence on they're sleeves with that one. That was before they went in the more Borges direction with Marathon.
1 drop; 2 items.
Ahhh
And it would be a great horror, I could see a survival horror game or maybe some sort of immersive sim that plays into horror elements (would that be the same thing??)
I think the S'pht Compiler will work like that.
Yeah no that makes sense. PID was a dungeon crawler with Immersive Sim elements.
Though god knows why there's still one hanging about on the Marathon.
i admit that i would love to see bungie doing an imersive sim, the tutorial of numarathon gives me a little of this vibe, but as I said, I'm having a lot of fun with the new one
the level and the environmental art are so cool
Indeed
Especially with how the 3d printed architecture contrasts with the natural world
there is a universe where double aught survived and we got Duality š
probably asked before but if the distress signal from the UESC Marathon is received back in Sol in 2883, and the game happens in 2893, how did runners get to tau ceti so fast? it took the marathon 300 ish years to get there.
also interesting tidbit of little note, the Marathon is described in the terminal in the OG marathon as powered by a Bussard Ramjet, which is interesting because those things can require somewhere in the ballpark of 29 terawatts per second of energy, so the UESC must have some kinda supertech power source because that's a planetary level of energy.
||leaving this here in case any of you have any idea what I would do next in new arg: Message from person in terminal that includes link to sliding puzzle when completed gives three different graffiti like images each corresponding to a word under them to spell out PATHWAYS INTO DARKNESS. It then shows a page with the words "Thought we were done here?" over a slideshow of the venice beach Marathon mural from two years ago. Below that is the phrase "THE DARKEST SECRETS ARE CONCEALED WITHIN A BRIGHT BEGINNING"||
What organization representatives are AI? Charter and I think Gantry are humans, Charter specifically was a runner.
Man I feel like the lore and ARG stuff for this game is already getting deep
Love it
š
that's not much in comparison to the planet today at 107,000,000 terawatt seconds
but deimos itself is a measly 7.5 miles wide
A thousand billion bucks is an important number
Background noise in the trailer video mentioned it
And in the game it is the achievement unlocked by upgrading faction
although if you did cover every single inch of deimos with solar panels you can make about
92409261300.1 TWh
course thats near the sun
They've prob got advanced fusion tech or dyson sphere or smth crazy
Centuries in the future
What's ARG?
In Marathon 2, Durandal warns the Sol system about a possible Pfhor invasion and mentions that he stayed long enough to teach them "warp capable fusion missiles." I'd assume that the relatively rapid advances in humanity's technology could be credited to Durandal
is it possible theres something else at the beach now
Man i havent played the original marathons since i was a little kid i need to replay them and brush up on the lore
forgot about that
was thinking it's possible or they've done something on a bigger scale with the phrase "thought we were done here"
then we would know what happens at the colony which we obviously dont, so this didnt happen in the 7th timeline which we are probably in
puzzles about the game through websites or other mediums like irl art to solve something
this is the current website https://unityispower.io/
I've seen a little graffity with mushrooms growing out of a body. Still new to the lore but have seen some of these brownish mushrooms
Could have something to do with the illness the colonist faced, fungi would explain how both the colonists and the crops got sick
So, from what i've gathred, we are TOTALLY unprepared for the Phor when they show up in the game and I HIGHLY doubt we won't see them. Seeing as we saw a compiler in the trailer and there's one in the damn steam page cover.
Might be the hazardous mushrooms that poison you, the orange ones that release the gas/spores
Seeing as Leela's message got there too late, later than she'd said it would, and Durandal didn't stop by Earth OR seeminly Blake and his Bobs didn't make it home.
Well, the UESC are probably guarding Tau Ceti IV for that reason
aren't some office rooms full of toxic gas? couln't it be that the AI went GladOS?
They sent ONE ship, i'm assuming the Phor navy is gonna respond in force this time.
I mean, Durandal handed them their asses with one stolen ship, clearly they won't underestimate Earth's AIs.
most if not all AIs are either already defunct or went rampant, not an unreasonable assumption but it could also be the UESC that activated it
or some poor fella's desperate attempt to decontaminate
Yes, in one of the NuCal missions, you are supposed to gather information about the AI, Gaius says that the AI felt fear and competition against humans
darius's outburst couldn't be considered rampancy under old diagnosis manuals
Any remaining AI on Tau Ceti gotta have PTSD lol.
we'll find out at launch I suppose
Darius?
Who's willing to bet Durandal will show up as a faction lol?
he's more god than faction atp honestly
but we'll see
worshipping him would be an interesting twist tho
true, but God needs his minions after al lol.
Also, maybe i'm crazy, cuz I don;t think i've seen a clear sky in Tau....but has anyone spotted the sun? Is it still THERE O_O
usually just down to tau ceti's own atmo lol
Well, I heard a theory that Tycho might be Arachne
nope
records show he's a runner notorious for high risk ops and assassinated a trax executive before
Good...good, then were okay lads...were okay...for now.
arachne is him and his sympathizers' way of transcending death...by endlessly repeating it somehow lol
smashing rocks equivalent
But is Charter the āfounderā or just a representative?
representative
You misunderstand, they already believe they transcend death via shells, they believe that they can learn from deaths
but a cult's more likely to show its own head
thanks yeah
then basically the goriest kind of not-so-nihilism
Arachne is only cool because of the aesthetic and the guns, but they are the equivalent of killing random things because they are bored
they know death as much as anybody else
only they worship ones that come back from it like gods
like charter and us runners
So Arachne are also flesh humans?
What does clase mean?
clase?
are Arachne and Mida "bros" since the Arachne founder assassinated a Traxus executive?
anything for mida to twist the truth into smth that softens corpo-gov grips
Don't even know if they are even affiliated in any way
Hell I'd doubt mfs outside the uesc even care about arachne
they might have the occasional interest alignment like the other corps potentially but absolutely not bros
^
Probably more like a "oh damn"
Do we know why Arachne killed the Traxus exec?
Ok a hypothetical. Battleroids are still used by uesc correct? How fucked would we be if they deployed one?
I'm keeping an eye out for any mentions of Battleroids for this reason. Shells for all they're alienness don't have Jjaro tech inside of them as far as I know. Although they've arguably been inspired by the Battleroid program.
Alien: Earth is a great tv watch when server slam ends. when is a machine not a machine?
Dude the minute battleroids are mentioned Iām gonna be poggin out
me when battleroids are mentioned in any way shape or form:
THERE HE IS!!! THERE'S MY FAVORITE weapon of mass destruction !!!
yeah they've done this stuff for the past 2 years every now and then I can send you the full doc with past info
oh can you send that to me too
i havent seen a lot of the old stuff
Arachne's mass amount of wealth is unknown so possibly tied to that since Traxus is such a big corporation.
maybe part of another competitor masked as a religion
I seeee
Speaking of you figure the PID protag is the protag from Marathon considering his weird flashbacks and dreams not resembling the future?
Always been a favorite theory of mine. That he's been alive for a fucking ridiculous amount of time.
Isn't that all but confirmed? Marathon security officer is PIDguy as a revived battleroid
badly cooked
Dude I fucking hated alien earth
really? why?
It was just corny and just stupid
Perfect organism until the main cast are onscreen
Then it's suddenly huur dur me slow
But anyway
What's a battleroid
Spartans before Spartans
Jokes aside
Pretty much souped up combat cyborgs implanted with Alien (the Jjaro) technology that makes them wicked lethal
Practically walking WMDs iirc
Just a dozen or so of them singelhandedly cleared out a space station if I recall
yeah writing in tv shows is cliche compared to movies, still love the action and a bit of more lore
were battleroids self-aware?
not sure
I know the battleroids are extremely strong though, being 7 foot tall cyborgs that are basically just SPARTANs
Worth also adding that they are undead cyborgs. To become a battleroid means having been dead and then revived via the Jjaro tech.
they're universal soldiers who are wickedly souped up yeah
Are we humans or like robots/androids?
They are way stronger than Spartans. Infinity elaborates how powerful a Battleroid could become on a long enough timespan when not kept in stasis all the time.
the Runners are copies of humans, they're bioandroids
Indeed the offical doctrine around Battleroids is to keep them asleep at all times if they can help it because the UESC and Humans in general are scared of what they are capable of. They don't know the true extent of they're abilities.
7 foot tall cyborgs that blended in with humanity
Btw where is our brain or body physically located?
according to the Marathon in-game codex, we are post-flesh
cyberspace or some shit, prolly some cyberacme server
Oh so we don't have any physical meat
The security officer was capable of for example Quantum Immortality and teleportation as well as traveling between timelines. And he was doing that on his own.
Like to see Master Chief do that one lmao.
no at the starting missions and dialogues with ONI she says we have left our body to become a runner and no we need to pay off debt
but yeah ngl Battleroids are probably somehing we dont wanna fight
what is this headcanon š
All the fucking AIs were helping you nonstop
Not even headcanon, this is Marathon Infinity
a battleroid shows up on Tau Ceti it would probably take multiple runner teams to down the guy
That is the text of Infinity yes.
it was Durandal/Thoth that was teleporting you around
Unless I skill issued at reading or false memory lmao
No in the one part where you were teleported into space nobody was around to help you. The Security officer did that himself.
And the actual text of Infinity explains that you saving and reloading is explicitly a part of his abilities. Similar meta explanation for how it works in Morrowind but Infinity came before Morrowind.
damn the Security Officer shouldve just teleported and blew up the Trixheem
Mjolnir Recon 54 was able to get to the heat death of the universe, it is kind of hard to top just how strong that dude is.
Durandal's last words to him before the universe ended were "You are destiny"
Infinity wouldnt have to happen
That's part of the plot yes.
You do go and stop the Trih Xeem from blowing up the sun.
no but why the 7 other timelines then when he was capable of doing that
seems like a plot hole to me
even marathon 1 didnt have to happen when you have this op character
Security dude was literally CHIM before it was an elder scrolls concept yeah
Because he's awakening to his powers and realizing how divine he is.
ahh awakening
That's the whole plot of infinity is realizing what you truly are.
Achieving Chim basically yeah.
youre literally durandals puppet for all the games almost
Yeah that's why its so cool when in Infinity Tycho realizes what your doing and gets really scared.
Like the Awakening thing is also why there is so much dream stuff too. A lot of this is happening unconsciously.
The UESC genuinely never wants to use Battleroids and the only reason they were on Tau Ceti 4 was because of MIDA actually. It was apart of doctor what's his faces plan (The guy who raised Durandal to Rampancy on purpose) because he was a MIDA agent. The UESC understands them well enough that they are very reluctant to use them. But MIDA is crazy enough to do that.
Mr Security Officer truly becomes Destinyā¢
They genuinely had no idea what the fuck they were messing around with by putting those Battleroids on Tau Ceti.
I mean they literally killed like 10 percent of the Martian Population when they were in charge of Mars in 3 months. That tracks. You need to understand MIDA is not a resistance in a nice and friendly way like you know the Resistence in Star Wars or whatever. If your a MIDA agent you need to be prepared to do the unthinkable. Cold blooded terrorism? Absolutely.
still wondering how they managed to get their M1T rifle into a different timeline
A MIDA dude will point at a school full of children and say they are UESC sympathisers and you need to blow the school up and you just have to be okay with that if you wanna work for them.
yep
i got the durandal voice line today on perimeter, everyone be jealous
Bungie verse theories grow stronger by the day
do we know if anyones checked out venice beach again to see if theres anything new
his voice actor nailed him
yeah bro i was dripping wet when his voice popped up, shit was mad crazy
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Durandal's voice is amazing, sent chills down my spine. Even after the filter to make him sound so terrifying you can really feel the VA doing some serious work.
||I have a crackpot theory that Gaius is the uploaded mind of NuCaloric founder Gus Moraine, it's mainly cause the two have the same voice and Gaius's obscured head is connected to tubes unlike the other AIs||
wouldn't be surprised
behind all that philanthropy's almost always incessant narcissism
could hear it from his message to the colonists about the drinkable burgers lol
Thinking about how Reconās ult is the only ability in the game where in the animation you have to input a password to activate it
Itās probably nothing but it just interests me
more likely a specific action set than an actual password honestly
like assassin sweeping his forearm after the pattern changes on it to activate his camo
that or tapping on the nodes just activates every eye on her helm
iirc the UI that shows up during the activation labels it as some kind of security measure
Iād have to check again though
shells are meant for UESC use originally and they shelved it after runners managed to get ahold of the ones we have rn
runners actually managed to crack the personality matrixes of these shells using recon specifically and it was leaked that the matrixes were way more than assistive, partly the reason for shelving
recon also has a small chance to drive the mind insane for all the info she gathers and shoves into the runner's mind but they simply chalk up the risks
Checked. UI says āINPUT ACCESS CODEā¦ā not a security measure by definition but seems to be one imo
Is this from the terminals out of curiosity
from the codex yes
recon pfp entry, runner tab
said that the matrixes actually force the user certain things making people question if there's any actual freedom for the user if that's what the UESC planned to implement for military use
and it's that lack of agency that partly caused the project's shelving from public
Ah ok I really hope they update the codex through Tau Ceti gg or through Karn
won't have enough time in the slam to unlock the other runners' entries cuz I hard mained recon for so long š
but yeah
Same, it takes awhile
ig it's up to collective effort to piece that category together now
unrelated but that ping 10 in a single pulse challenge is SO hard š
reinforcements only ever drop 8 so I have to catch a squad right when they start fighting
and I'm not that good at pvp either so I can't full wipe a squad on a single ult's duration lol
I always play support in pvp games because my logic is āI canāt PvP to save my life but I can help other people PvPā š
i have a theory rook is the first runner hired and his cognitive retainment is basically gone so hes become essentially like a servitor from 40k
anybody unlock the lore for the runner shells in the lore tab for them?
Sorry but what is that? Is it related to the Durandal graffiti on the wall on Perimiter?
i want to see the Compiler soo bad
The core gunplay and atmosphere are strong, but the experience feels too limited and punishing right now.
The game needs more modes and variationāan arena-style mode and options for duos or 4-person squads in extraction would add flexibility and replay value.
TTK feels too fast and healing is too scarce, so most fights end instantly. Slowing combat slightly or increasing healing would allow for more meaningful engagements.
UI and objective clarity need improvement. Contracts should come with default map markers, and interior objectives should be easier to locate without excessive wandering.
Situational awareness is lacking. With no minimap, tracker, or detection tools, encounters often feel random. Some limited player detection system would make fights feel more intentional.
Loot also needs stronger visual distinction, and proximity chat seems non-functional, which hurts player interaction.
Strong foundation, but it needs more variety, clearer UI, and better combat balance to feel complete.
Is there a web page that summarizes all of the Marathon lore ?
maube in future
previous game lore is mentioned, so i think this is a continuation
Hello, I'm new in the marathon community but I really love the three original games and its lore, I also love ARGs. what is the best video or masterdoc to get quickly up to speed with all the ARGs the game has gotten and did they correlate at all with the original lore? idk anything about the new marathon game, does it has anything to do lorewise with the original? I've been playing the server slam and obviously saw the marathon and tau ceti, also mida and a durandal voiceline, I remember de spht compiler in the trailer aswell. Sorry lots of questions at one but so happy and excited to be here
fuck someone asked the same question just as I was writing my message
shell classes arenāt individual runners
at the start of the game he had a voice line, it started with the cyberacme ai or whatever that an unrecognised something something is requesting access and then durandal said like two things
some good resources in pins
So as i understood
U Gotta know what hapenned on tau's colonisation ?
not heat death, big crunch
I know the marathon lore I'm looking for videos or masterdocs about the different ARGs yall have already completed
yup thatās in those pinned sites too
alr sorry
Oh shit.
Iāve always thought that was a very tenuous connection
I don't even know what to make of that. Is this Durandal coming back to earth like 2's epilogue mentions or is this a different timeline being invaded by the original timeline?
I mean, battleroids are revived corpses, there were 7 battleroids on the uesc marathon, and six were accounted for in tau ceti
The manuals keep talking about the situations being "oddly familiar"
That's pretty cut and dry
Doubtfull too
Even is Durandal still alive
''alive''
I think itās even worse than that: the rebel Sāpht who are still fighting the Pfhor (because they donāt have human help defeating them like they did in the M2 epilogue) are also hostile, and responsible for the 2813 attack on Tau Ceti.
and their war will spill over and we wonāt know which if either side to root for⦠and maybe our corps will prefer the Pfhor as valuable business partners to sell biomata to as slaves.
Imo the new marathon looked like a reboot to me, which would make sense as a new alternate timeline w'rkncacnter stuff, but tbf I don't know much about the new marathon to link anything
iirc mida was a corporation back on the day not just a revolutionary movement
Right but we know of two characters for example who can cross timelines like the Thoth + Durandal fusion AI or the Security Officer. And then of course the original Durandal on the ship could be there too doing something IDK what.
No, def revolutionary movement, the variation comes from the Mida Multitool flavor text iirc
we appear to have developed FTL travel some time between 2795 (when a 100-year followup mission was sent) and 2888 (when a 5-year catchup mission was sent).
I may be mixing it I'm no expert whatsoever
Yeah they started out as a legit political party before radicalizing and seizing control of Mars for like 3 months before the UESC arrived to shove their shit in.
Yeah durandal is definitely the original durandal, he's all crazy saying something about waves like in the originals, but this game has to be an alternate timeline no?
yeah totally checks out
a ramjet is powered by hydrogen siphoned from the interstellar medium, used as fuel and reaction mass for a fusion drive. so the faster it gets up to the faster its hydrogen input, which yeah gets up to big numbers eventually.
yeah a bussard ramjet optimistically can output around ~981,000 Lbs of thrust
[REDACTED] WERE AT TAU CETI
I love the terminals, of course.
however at an estimated weight of 75 million pounds ish
Durandal is not crazy. He's just very willful and independent. Very Nietzschean esque. If he's acting "crazy" in the voice line that could have any number of implications.
just for the thing itself
well, the poem would then have been read by Durandal-Thoth, so kinda yes
It could be the Thoth + Durandal fusion AI as the waves is referring to the Jjaro creation myth. Or I mean it means more than that but on a surface level yeah its about the Jjaro.
Its referring to the creation of the universe "The waves were battles and the battles were waves".
old school Bungie fans are already building a spiritual reboot of Myth called Deadhold
of course I don't mean crazy as literally crazy just some cryptic philosophical blabber, although I do think he is kind of crazy
Sorry I'm the number 1 Durandal defender so I got defensive lol. I like that he starts out kind of selfish and conceited and becomes more genuinely heroic as the series goes on.
itās probably just the final timeline of infinity
I absolutely love durandal, might be top fiction characters oat but of course his flaws is what makes him special
10/9
Right. Speaking of waves if what I'm hearing is correct, That's about you know that whole shit with the Jjaro fighting the formless chaos that the Wārkncacnter lived in and thus giving order to the universe and also creating it.
I think he sounds like Durandal-Thoth, older and mellowed and poetic
Yeah that was my first thought too. Combined with the whole Quantum bullshit going on my gut feeling is some Timeline/Quantum invasion shit going on.
Intersting
Where can I find it?
wondering if someone could clarify something for me
my suspicion is that after becoming unmoored from time at the end of Infinity, Durandal-Thoth have looked out over all of history to the very end of the universe (the Infinity epilogue), and then come back to Tau Ceti in the late 29th century to make a subtle strategic intervention to change the course of events they know are coming
But as we said Thoth-Durandal could travel between timelines so this being an alternate timeline still holds up no?
it says the shells are basically just empty husks you inhabit, but they're always depicted with unique personalities, are they lying about them being more than just blank slate empty shells? or is that just a stylistic choice to make them seem more interesting
Just pray a Wārkncacnter doesn't show up or things are going to get really confusing in like five seconds. They are literal Chaos incarnate and not in like the 40K way where they have wants or feelings. This thing corrupts the meta text itself its fundamentally unknowable.
I am assuming this part of the mystery they're developing
the shells have āpersonality matricesā
which are not full personal identities
Like ONI has lines about "hm, that's weird what happened when you spawned in. Must be nothing!"
Right that's the point and my suspicion. Infinity already opened the gate to alternate timelines and crossing between them. (Jumping over the cell bars)
it could be, but thereās not yet reason to think it isnāt just the last timeline from Infinity
mmmm delicious path
Thats the kind of cosmological horror i want to take a swing at.
when you say last timeline from infinity, what are you referring to? Like a sequel of infinity? (if that is even possible)
the timeline that the last level of Infinity takes place in
I think weāre just later in that timeline
This would make a lot of sense as there is no mention of a pfhor invasion anywhere that I can find. This would suggest we are in an alternate version of the Marathon mission and colonization of Tau Ceti 4.
Bring on the timelines!
ooooh, yeah that absolutely makes sense as well
Plus like this version of the Marathon disaster. There are three events.
So an extra time line compared to the what? 7 of infinity?
shells are equipped with personality matrixes intended to help a runner get their job done most effectively
First the Marathon blows up. Flash forward years later and the disease breaks out. Then flash forward and the anomaly appears.
so iirc you keep ur memories but ur personality is changed(?)
Ye. God what a great game 2 + Infinity were
Yeah there was implications of even more timelines than what we saw in Infinity although that's going really deep into the Bungie Psychosis.
You mean the Bungie verse? Even if it ends up being confirmed I won't we won't actually see it that much
I want Marathon to be Marathon focused
Aren't the other timelines "failed" timelines tho? Like they end in some kinda universe apocalypse?
Yeah that's the whole point. The security officer is fighting against the Wārkncacnter by timeline hopping until he can seal it away.
Of all the things Bungie will do, I'm not worried about a multiverse thing. You got some guns in D2 for the Bungie 30th and a very oblique reference people read as The MC but that was it
No I mean the Marathon Verse. I'm not implying some Bungie Unified verse or anything.
Bungie historically plays with fourth wall breaking stuff. In Destiny 2, they once used some fourth wall breaking shenannigans to give us Marathon themed cosmetics in an event.
I would not expect anything more significant than that sort of thing here.
That kind of crossover items and mini things I expect
I wouldn't worry. Their games use a lot of similar narrative themes, but Halo, Destiny/2, and Marathon all feel very distinct in terms of how they tell their stories. And I believe wholeheartedly that Bungie prefers it that way
there was definitely a Pfhor invasion in both all Infinity timelines and the new game
yeah, the Pfhor invasion plus two more
Yeah no like. They couldn't be more different tone wise and what inspired them.
Ah okay so you think the Marathon blowing up is the Pfhor attacking. Not an unreasonable assumption.
Although if I remember correctly the Pfhor returned to Tau Ceti at some point and killed everybody there/ scorched the earth no? Its just that things are going a bit different from how I remember it going.
No mention of an Anomaly or disease or any of that stuff.
This is also what I assumed
In the m2 timeline, probably didnāt happen in this timeline
Okay as someone that didnāt get many of the new lore pickups, whatās the biggest stuff that are being taken away from the Slam?
Cinematic trailer implied these didnāt become prominent until after 2812
Yeah it could either be a new timeline due to quantum shenanigans on behalf of any number of actors or one of the many Infinity timelines including the final one. Much to think about.
Like you can't even directly perceive this thing is what's crazy. When its being unleashed its looks like an eclipse or something of that nature is happening. So you have an idea that something is there but you can't directly perceive it and in fact perceiving it at all may put you in even more danger. Indeed estimates of how fucking big these things are range from around 2 KM around to I don't fucking know. Its a primordial chaos being that existed before the Universe did what did you expect?
only in m2
Eclipse like "prick your finger it is done, the moon has now eclipsed the sun"?
Or like Berserk
I meant like an actual Eclipse or Reverse eclipse. You can see for yourself from the descriptions and art that something is there and its doing weird shit to the sun/ blocking it out kind of. What I mean is you can make out the kind of outline or absence but not the thing in itself.
There are at least 3 other planets in the system
Unclear if everything in the skybox are planets or moons
Although there is a W'rkncacnter under a Olemic Pyramid right now that's sleeping so if you want be my guest and go take a look! Tell us what you see!
I'm doing the crossword... is this the right place to ask for help. I've got 3 left š
You could try ||cheater||
I think there should be duos in this game...
I'm lookin for ||14 down... 25 across... 33 across||
Any word on if more of the lore entries will be voiced on launch? Really enjoying those
I dont think i have the inventory space.
Joke too niche?
i know this isnt lore related but please people, use a mic on this game, your team needs you. thanks.
No I get it lol.
Drinkable burbger
i think a lot of codex will be voiced. its gonna get wild
S'pht voice acting when...
i refuse to believe nucal has good intention
no way gaius looks like that and just wants to help everyone
NuCal strikes me as the Unilever/NestlƩ of the setting. Their goal is control and profit, through controlling the basic requirements for human survival
I think basically every faction is objectionable. It's a dystopia. That's why we love it š
the line about cobbler in the message logs on unityispower realy put things into perspective for me
on like the state of the world
cheeburgr
true..
ikr theres something sinister about nucal but I cant wrap my hand around it
it seems surreal, especially in a future dystopian society
Maybe Iām crazy but I believe that the Gerritt White terminal may be related to Arachne in some way, thereās a ton of mentions of āhandsā ānemesisā and āmurderā
āHe recalled a theory he had come up with after a bloody
schoolhouse brawl. The theory was simple. At some point in
time, everyone was a murderer.ā
āThe wrists of
someone who had tried too many times to clap his hands.ā
āIn its place, there was a
new sound, the clapping of hands together. He blinked hard to
made out his hands again. They had disappeared; his arms
connected at the wrists.ā
^ Gerritt White terminal, Marathon Classic
Has anyone had the curt "You aren't supposed to be here" line at the start of a run? who is that?
āHis arms were connected at the wristā
Arachne intro shows hands slowly being pulled together and attached at the wrist
Probably Durandal
ooh
Thereās some new AI though so Iām not gonna confirm that lol
it better not be the yokel farmer AI in dire marsh
I so badly hope we get some sort of an event that brings the Pfhor or any of the other aliens into play. an update that adds them as a map event, or even a map that has them instead of UESC. would love to see them in their 2026 tiger engine glory
I feel like Gerritt White is either a messianic figure in the Arachne faith, or a parable made by them thereās so many coincidences. Heavily recommend reading the terminal
like durandal is cool and all but i want to see me pfhor again
It's so weird getting into this game after having played the originals on the mac back when they came out in the 90s. The lore back then was so wildly different from anything at the time, and better than most things today.
||We are getting a Sfit compiler in the cryo archive map||
Well they returned to Tau Ceti after Durandal left in the original trilogy, which is when all communications ceased
So thereās room for them to come back, possibly with new enslaved races
Theyāre maybe the best video game narrative of all time imo theyāre actually incredible
thats neat. id like more than just that one enemy tho tbh. i wanna see more of the actual pfhor roster and not just one offs from the slave races
I am sure we will in due time
https://marathongame.fandom.com/wiki/Public_Access_Terminal_95-w - Gerritt White terminal, for those who arenāt aware this is the hardest terminal to find in Marathon classic, and to this day nobody knows what it means
Iām inclined to believe itās somehow related to Arachne after re-reading it with the Arachne information we now have
The terminals wove such a good story. They left it open to interpretation about your character's origin. But also funny in how much Marathon lore was repurposed when they finally rolled out Halo. Mjolnir armor, cyborgs, rampancy in AI. They borrowed from themselves.
communication ceased immediately upon their first attack when the primary comms array was destroyed by the EMP
SPNKR and a few other things as well
MISRIAH
Ah I thought they had returned shortly after Durandal fled
Halo began life as a Marathon sequel until names were changed to protect the franchise
i forget, what was that enemy from the og games that was always underwater? i feel like that would be a cool addition to swampy areas in a later update
they do return, but thatās not when comms are lost
Didnāt Jason Jones make that call because he didnāt want to make the same thing
flickta but they are native to lhowon not tau ceti
The pathways into darkness guys lol
maybe not with that attitude
If we get a map thatās a Phfor outpost we could maybe see them as waste removal species or something like that
What is baea? Also, I can see how it could be planned as a sequel. The covenant were very close to the phor and how they enslaved the s'pht, s'pht'kr, and hulks
I wonder something what exactly is rook, is it a shell or a hacked uesc robot, or a hacked uesc shell
Always wondered considering their design
