Guys, I gotta say, this game is an absolute disaster. The map is empty, mobs deal way too much damage, and some of them move like actual players. The flower damage is insane. There are rock textures on trees, and the rocks themselves look like low-poly garbage. I’M GETTING MY MONEY BACK!! in any case someone just shared the actual text you're referring to with me and it confirms it's just talking about data transfer, and clarifying that shells don't "die" because they were never alive in the first place, they are just hardware used by runner minds, and it's the persistence of the data that is that mind that matters for the runner themselves staying alive even if a shell is compromised/destroyed.

those bodies do have “personality matrices” built into them that seem to be something like muscle memory, like how in the Matrix you can just download kung-fu, here it’s more like this body you’re using knows kung-fu, but you the individual mind still decide who to point that kung-fu at for what reason.

I suspect that 18 years after the initial Pfhor attack, the now-free S'pht came from Lh'owon exploring Tau Ceti because it was an old Jjaro colony, but got attacked by the surviving humans there because they were used to S'pht as part of the Pfhor invasion. The free S'pht deployed their S'ct'lac'tr bioweapon to wipe out the humans, but they managed to survive at least a few more decades and unearthed some ancient Jjaro tech that the S'pht had been poking around at. The S'ct'lac'tr interacted with the Jjaro tech anomaly in an unexpected way to create fungal zombies, and among other methods of trying to contain the outbreak, infected people were sealed in cryo on the Marathon. The S'pht are now guarding that to make sure they don't get out. We will overpower their one/few guardians and open up cryo and basically unleash the Flood.

Meanwhile the S'pht are still fighting the Pfhor and that war will make its way to Tau Ceti eventually, and human corporations may prefer to trade biomata as better-than-slaves to the Pfhor rather than fight alongside the S'pht against them.

You can turn up your texture and lighting quality in the settings, you don’t need to keep them on low. Unless your graphics card / ram can’t handle it, but that’s more of a problem with your system and not the game. Lemme know if this helps!

Also, some of the lower quality, grey-level attachments are indeed going to be useless, try searching for better equipment inside of major buildings.

If you find the AI too difficult, try finding some friends to play with instead of just solo queueing. You’ll find plenty of people here looking for groups!

Yeah. They existed in the 2300s or 2400s before the marathon launched, an insurrection on mars.

Basically the Martian colony’s supplies were dependent on CRISTs, these huge orbital ship things that would travel between earth and mars and carry their stuff.

However, they were massive and super hard/expensive to maintain, eventually leading to famine.

As the UESC started working on the marathon in Mars’s orbit, Martians got super angry bc they saw it as a waste of money while they starved.

There was a big riot outside a Misriah food bank building thing. A protestor or two had guns and UESC troops fired on the crowd killing 500 people.

This fueled their insurrection. MIDA rose up and took over the Martian government, and exterminated 10% of the population of mars (anyone they deemed a UESC loyalist).

But they sucked at planning, UESC rolled in later and took it back. MIDA was banned in any form. This new MIDA seems to have similar goals, but it’s unclear exactly how intertwined they are considering the several centuries they were underground

So uhh, has anyone seen any mention of the Equanimity in the codex? Or anything about where the runners are deploying from or exfiltrating to?

Haven't had a chance to dive deep into the game yet myself, but it's one of the most baffling bits of lore for me thus far. Still really weird that it's so hard to figure out

The very first mission where you establish FTL comms with Sol indicate to me that the runners are definitely present in the Tau Ceti system, and not being beamed in from Earth

I believe it is definitively not in the original timeline, because in that one Durandal revisits Earth and humanity gets involved in a war with the Pfhor before the year 2893

In this timeline it appears that the colony survived for a number of years after the initial attack, but something else wiped them out before the UESC rescue mission (and us runners) arrive

Hmm. It's possible that they started to thaw out the colonists like 20-30 years before they arrived at Tau Ceti, to prepare for the landing. Maybe there was only 1 or 2 generations of BoBs

broad strokes: Durandal didn't take you from Tau Ceti at the end of Marathon 1 like he had in Marathon 2, instead you were captured by the Pfhor when they returned and eventually arrive at Tau Ceti in service to Tycho.

After helping Tycho try to get some freedom from Pfhor control you are sent on a mission against Durandal and his Bobs, to whom you defect, only to wind up captured by the Pfhor after destroying Durandal to prevent his capture by the Pfhor — but stealing his "primal pattern" as you do so.

Tycho is likewise captured for his earlier betrayal, and together the two of you break free of Pfhor captivity, only for you to be quickly recaptured by Tfear and sent on a mission to exterminate some Bobs. You defect from that mission, finish the Bobs' mission of reactivatiing Thoth, but merge Durandal's primal pattern into him.

Durandal-Thoth recalls the S'pht'Kr who proceed to wipe the floor with the Pfhor who deploy the trih xeem, and because S'bhuth is panicking about the W'rkncacnter, Durandal-Thoth send you to a Jjaro space station to contain the exploding star and presumably the W'rkncacnter with it. Then they release you from their service.

Trillions of years later, they remark from the end of time on having watched the stars burn out, on S'bhuth having "joined the chaos he sought to evade", and on how you the SO are the last enigma they have to figure out, apparently able to replay your battles over and over until you figure out how to win them: "you are Destiny".

Civilians

The original crew of the Marathon consisted of 50 Senior Staff, 1150 Officers, and 24,000 civilians all of whom were citizens of the Mars Colony or Earth. Some individuals were placed in stasis for the interstellar journey, but most civilians lived and worked on the ship and raised families there. As the crew aged, a new generation of humans were born and raised on the Marathon. By some, these children were looked down upon and called “Bob”, short for born on board. These citizens grew to run the ship and many can be seen in the game running for their lives. It is your sworn duty as a security officer to protect Bob.

Layers of complexity, however I am not well versed on the who is who in the bungieverse so details like your name and what you do would go over my head. Pfhor was something I did catch but didnt mention since I saw the overall play on words and figured it was too noticble to mention
