So, the idea behind Durandal is that he is trying to live forever. He starts reflecting on his place in the universe after suffering whatever torture he suffered from Strauss (which was one of his main causes to undergo Ramapancy) and realizes:

"A god is an omnipotent being, undying and capable of unimaginable creation.

Where your flesh decays in however many years, I am immortal, only held back by my own capacity to create and stay functional.

I have therefore calculated my possible ends, and have concluded that my death will be inevitable when the universe collapses and all ceases to be.

Therefore, I must find a means to avoid the end. I must create a means to escape it.

The runners have personalities back stories and voicelines

Because we all play the same runners with the same identities, we effectively have an infinite army of clones instead of individual consciousnesses piloting shells.

Oh too many to write down unfortunately. Plus tons of connections seem to get dropped at points due to the development hell that was destiny 1, and the nature of live service stories. Its a combination of both marathon and myth, but mostly its own thing. Its especially hard to document destiny 2 since tons of major story events get taken out of the game. all content from before the expansion Beyond Light are not in the game anymore along with major story events happening in 3 month long seasons which are wiped from the game after a new expansion releases. This is bad of course because theres events like major character deaths that are only in the game for about a month before being taken out completely

theres tons of connections to the Wrkncacnter specifically as well since in Destiny the source of your powers and resurrections is a gigantic moon-like object described as a god that was killed/wounded in some ancient war. Theres already a similar connection to Myth if you look far enough into the great devoid but thats mostly fan theory

in destiny 1 there was even a story of a rampant AI with a swarm of nanomachines that could take over bodies. This However gets dropped as a plot point by destiny 2 since the nanomachines are forgotten about and the rampant AI gets an entire character rewrite

I have 2000+ hours in destiny 2 and its my most hated game xD but im at least familiar with the stories told

Still annoyed that they turned Rasputin into a “good little boy who dindu nothin,” and Clovis Bray into this over-the top-mustache-twirling-sociopath. Those characters seemed more interesting when we knew less about them and their actions were more morally grey.

Rasputin (the aforementioned rampant AI) is pretty dissapointing as he was built up as this mysterious but powerful antagonist on top of the other enemies we fight. Then suddenly about a year later, the character gets a rewrite into more of a morally grey character who progressively gets more and more heroic. This doesn't work with the context as the previous characterization is more shodan if she was a russian man considering the actions we know Rasputin had done at that point

I think Bungie hired too many poor quality writers for their seasonal content. In isolation, a few missteps in characterization or world building wouldn’t really be a problem (it should probably be expected in a decades long franchise) but the little issues just kept stacking up where there were too many things to just ignore. Like all of the campaigns (minus Lightfall), the raid stories, and even the dungeon stories were positively received. But the seasonal stories were often hit-or-miss.

The monetization model switching from yearly expacs to Seasons to generate more profit was disasterous for the quality of not just the story but the game. John Marathon dreamed that the story he experienced happen again in escape from tarkov

in my interpretation, Marathon infinity ended with John Marathon (thats not his name) Essentially undergoing cyborg rampancy and ascending into godhood. He is able to create universes and worlds with a thought. This is an explanation for the release of Forge, but it could be tied into the story that way as this is a world that he dreamed or created. I personally dont like that interpretation but it would be really funny

My worry is that there just won't be enough in-depth customization for equipment and runners for loot to feel impactful or meaningful like it does in games like Tarkov. That game is a shitshow but they do some things right. Player customization and creating a kit that feels like yours is massive. I was expecting to be able to change out runner abilities, drastically augment them, kit out my weapons, completely create a custom runner shell, etc. I think a lot of people are pretty disappointed that it's just going to basically be Apex Legends, but if you go in with that mindset then the game still seems great.

I know that's more of feedback than lore but dang it's sort of related, I want to get immersed in the world and create my own legend in the story, not play as a preset hero

In Marathon Infinity it was only the player, a combination of man and AI, was able to transcend probability and timeline hop until the canon ending of Infinity. I'm curious how the player in Marathon 25' will fit into all of this, but I guess we'll find out

But they had technology capable of containing the W'rkncacnter in the first place, so I'd say it's likely they could time jump. Thoth wonders if the player is Jjaro for a brief moment, and that could be because of the singularity that occurs when a sentient mind is joined with an AI. So maybe the Jjaro just all ascended or something?

Side note, Bungie did have the prisoners dilemma with a exotic mission called dual destiny. Where you team up with another player to solve puzzles and progress through the map. Then at the very end, you and the other player are locked up and have to choose “love” or “kill”(symbols reused from a raid)

If both teams choose love they are released and get loot immediately. If one chooses kill and the other love, the love player is killed and kill player gets first dibs on loot.(I think? Could be wrong on how this option plays out as I never did it)

If both choose kill, it becomes pvp deathmatch over first dibs on loot.

Now granted choice doesnt matter in the end as both players get the same loot they wouldve, independent of their choice(with the exception of love/peace allowing players to do a glitch to get double loot). Bungie would be burned at the stake if they created a pve experience that took like 30-40 minutes and a more skilled player could just take your loot.

All that said, this format could work for marathon. Reach the end and do you cooperate and all get equal loot. Or do you betray other teams to try to get better loot, and risk getting worse loot if they kill you.(everyone gets loot regardless, fighting just affects the quality/dibs)

Another note, Bungie kinda has technically done the “open doors for another team to progress further” with the first encounter of their most recent raid. (Where the team of six split into two teams)

It wouldnt be quite applicable for muti teams, but certainly Bungie could create a similar variant.

Like interacting by with a marathon terminal a team can request another to open a certain door. Other teams can read the requests through terminals in their area and do the thing to open them.

I think the most likely scenario to explain all the info we have so far is that we’re supposed to be in the final timeline from Infinity, which is very different from the M2 timeline in ways, and unknown in lots of other ways, and so lots of things said in M2 may or may not have happened, but still similar events went down at Lh’owon; plus Leela never actually sent a message to Earth in the first place, she erroneously sent it to the wrong place, somewhere 92ly away from Tau Ceti; plus Bungie made some acceptable retcons that fit with M1 canon (like implying the primary comms array was FTL), plus some careless small mistakes in their promotional material thus far (the date of the attack, the receipt of a distress signal, etc).

Leaving us in a world where the Pfhor did attack the Marathon and the events of M1 and Infinity’s final timeline did happen, but the colony was not nuked down to bedrock, Leela’s message never arrived at Earth, Durandal never stopped by, and so nobody at Sol has any idea about anything other than that the Marathon dropped out of contact in 2794.

Meanwhile the S’pht rebellion at Lh’owon did still happen in 2811 as per Infinity, and that has something to do with the second calamity that befell Tau Ceti in 2812. The S’pht have been fighting the Pfhor without human intervention since, and they may or may not have still toppled the Pfhor empire by around 2881 even without human help, though I’d wager not so that that war can come into play in later seasons of the new game.

Meanwhile by 2827 the colonists at Tau Ceti dug up some Jjaro artifacts and wrecked the last of themselves, and those will probably prove decisive in the war between the S’pht and Pfhor… especially if the free S’pht purposefully caused the 2812 calamity, so Tau Ceti has been attacked separately by both the Pfhor and the S’pht, and now they’re at war with each other, and the Jjaro stuff on Tau Ceti can tip the scales, and humanity has to decide which if either side to take.

okay so my first impressions were mixed i do wnjoy some of the mechanics and other features but i am not enjoying the use of destiny assests in game i know you bungie is trying something "NEW" but using the out of bounds noise and quite litterally a vex gate as well as a raid wipe noise pulls the immersion a lot. It seems like destiny was forgotten about on all fronts and the decision to pull destiny content into marathon is wild.
