I just went back to Destiny2 for 2hours and A*c R for 2 hours.

Most fun: A - M - D

you know what the letters stand for. 3 games.

M: frustration, too complex, trying to run like an idiot with some sparkleaf from one place to another.

A: fun, simple, satisfying. Sometimes simplicity just works.

D2: fun, satisfying, beautiful.

I think there are some issues. First is comms/social. In A it just works. In M it took me weeks to figure out if ppl can hear me, etc. it turned out ppl just prefer Discord, because it is just not good enough. in A it just works. And ppl stay in lobbies! It's nice to go for a second round with folks by default! I tried playing the game with same folks, almost impossible! We ended up on Discord!

Railguns sound nice but are a type of weapon. Just like Precision rifles and shotguns are. They’re essentially Marathon’s version of Destiny’s Linear Fusion Rifles. LFRS are a hybrid between lasers and snipers in that they do huge damage but require a charge up time. This makes them powerful but harder to use. Especially in a game like Marathon.

Stick to Sniper Rifles for now. They’re more common and do the same feature for less work. Railguns don’t seem to be worth it yet.

I think you’re worrying about a lot of things you don’t have to. Compare this game to Rainbow Six Siege. It’s going to have a long tail on it with a dedicated and passionate player base that likely slowly grows over time.

But first it’s going to steadily lose players until it finally settles, like most games. The amount of people who have made YouTube videos about their issues with Marathon and then made later ones saying “I get it now.” is so high it’s kind of funny.

As for the grind, this game isn’t grindy outside of leveling your faction rep and figuring out what your goals are. You constantly get exp from your teammates’ contracts and actions.

With everything resetting between seasons, the best thing you can do is put time in and figure out what kind of gameplay you enjoy most while slowly working on goals. We’re all dying together and that’s half the fun.
