Why is the game dying 💀 Cause they refused to make a d3 but instead greenlight 5 projects 4 of which were canned. They fr thought one game could sustain 5 games in development. Then they laid people off cause they could not fund it and were not delevering sony results. The amount of people working on d2 dropped espically as the studio focused on getting marathon out so d2 suffered. Charging the same out for less content with the main core game suffering like pvp. From what I remember, Bungie's official statement on the matter is that they aren't supporting linux anymore because with D2 the linux builds of the game (when they were supported) were much easier to use for identifying weaknesses in the anti-cheat. Thereby making it easier to develop cheating tools that created a long period of constant cheating in the game. So they decided to stop supporting linux because "the community can't be trusted not to exploit linux builds" essentially.

As someone who vastly prefers linux to windows, I find this decision extremely frustrating and rather shortsighted. But that is their stated reasoning.

It's not that simple. The way Linux manages access to the ring 0 (kernel) is not very secure and ultimately bad actors can easily access it from the ring 3 (userspace). You don't even need to use compromised drivers and fake hardware ids like they do on Windows. It makes the anticheat far less effective.

Even more importantly, anticheat lives on Ring 3 in linux rather than Ring 0 like on windows. This means that anticheat programs have far fewer privileges in general. Although microsoft has recently announced that Ring 0 antivirus don't have long to live, after the recent disaster with cloudstrike.

As far as I'm aware, auto bans due to anticheats detecting "malicious" code execution or snooping is relatively common practice for the industry. There have been numerous scandels where these automated systems were too sensitive and banned players for innocuous behavior, none of which could have occured with manual review. So I know for a fact that human review is not the only way.

I'm not sure how having 3k hours in counter-strike is relevant to understanding the inner workings of anti-cheat systems. And I have some programming experience as well, it's a lovely field to work in!

I don't believe manually reviewing 100% of potential cheaters is necessary or feasible. Many cheating systems, especially those involving execution of code that modifies stored variables or game states, but also those that involve network sniffing, are perfectly detectable by means of anticheat software. And if detected, there is no reason that bans could not be automatically issued. In an industry with tens of anticheat solutions, I find it difficult to believe that all systems involve manual bans being issued 100% of the time. Even from an a-priori perspective. So I'd appreciate some hard evidence to back your claims if you don't mind.

But on to your point, do you have any numbers to back up your claim that automated systems are ineffective? Because although I think humans are obviously more reliable than automated systems, I also think that a lot of low effort cheats that could just directly modify memory or (for example) inject packets into p2p networking are kept at bay by automated anti cheat systems or architecture designed to prevent attacks, both of which can also issue bans to discourage these attacks.

Without systems like this, low effort attacks would be more common and thus it would be easier to cheat. So cheaters would have higher numbers and be more difficult to manually ban. To me it seems that manual and automated systems should be deployed together in order to create the most effective anticheat architectures.
