The truth is, extraction games are pointless. There's no win state. You progress for the experience of progressing, and once you run out of progress, there's nothing to do but kill people. Once you're bored of that, you wait for wipe so you can do it all over again.

It's fully about the journey, not the destination, so your progress getting wiped is just more journey to enjoy

Yup. It's not to experience new content, as you can do that just fine without wiping, it's to redo what you have already done. Because the fun is in the doing, not what's being done.

Which is what ARC misunderstands. Gear fear is a hurdle a player needs to overcome, not a flaw in the game design. If losing your progress ruins the game for you, well you don't get the game, it hasn't clicked for you. ARCs main flaw is that it never teaches players what makes it special, it lets them keep playing it like it's some other game by making wipes optional and using a playstyle based matchmaking system.

Which does mean more people play it, there's not a risk of someone falling off because they're trying to play it like a different game, since that's rewarded

I don't really agree that gear fear is a hurdle. I see it more as a feature of the genre. Something you deal with same as a shrinking arena in Battle Royal games.

One in ten of every people on arc chose to reset. That already tells you that the playing field is incredibly uneven.

But it doesn't matter because arc is designed as a casual extraction shooter Marathon will not be so the wipes are even more required to maintain an even playing field.

Yes, but it also establishes bad habits that will follow them to other games, and if every game begins to adopt this "extraction shooter but like only if you wanna ok?" Because it worked so well for arc, the genre as a whole will lose what makes it special and functionally die, replaced by something else that resembles it, but is functionally a meaningless dopamine machine like any other shooter genre, rather than the thoughtful and unique affair it once was.

That's why I harbor some resentment, because it's success is setting a bad example that may kill the genre in the long run

1: all of the voice acting is AI and they're firm on not changing it because it's an in-house model they've been working on since before this genAI stuff was popular and they're stubborn about dropping it now that it's being used in unethical ways and they're kinda encouraging it by being a successful game that uses it

2: More recently they admitted they're using Aggression Based Match Making, essentially scripting matches based on how often you attack others, so friendly players get to frolic in the fields of love and kindness and killers get cod lobbies to tdm in. This is bad design for so many reasons I won't get into.

So, by adding ABMM, you've made the decision that you're giving everyone what they want, and an extraction shooter, hell, really any PvEvP game cannot give everyone what they want, or it loses all identity, everything that makes it unique. Players should be forced to overcome the great terror of mild discomfort to reach more satisfying heights and discover the emergent stories that make these games so special, not huddle in their little perfect corners with their algorithmic dopamine machine that gives them just what they want by disrespecting their intelligence and agency. This genre is special because it's thoughtful and requires you to expect the unexpected. If it just gives you what you want without thinking, then there's no difference between an extraction shooter and a battle royale or a cod. Just motions to go through for free dopamine.

It's tribalism and nothing more, there is no value to be extracted and almost universally if "either side" (as though there is only two) is listened to, the game immediately gets worse and begins to tank. It's inevitable that it will happen, and frequently, but do not mistake the commonality of the argument with value.

It primarily comes down to people who want the game to be something it isn't refusing to just play something else. People asking for arena modes, pve modes, etc. It's all disrespect and disdain for the genre, not legitimate discussion of important elements

No, it's them removing the elements of extraction that make it unique in seeking profitability. The game was already more PvE focused, and its design encouraged a more even measure of team-ups and shootouts. Then, they add abmm to make it so you never have to think or expect the unexpected, the algorithm decides what you'd prefer. Then they make wipes optional, so you never have to overcome gear fear and can sit on piles of loot, losing the point of what makes these games fun and falling off over time. So on and so forth. They had a very solid core that was coincidentally more PvE focused, which affected the quality in no way. But in fear of committing to the genre, they watered it down like hell, and while it's still fun, it's barely functional as an extraction game for it.

There are a lot of things arc could have done to be better than this. But here it stands as a wishy washy sorta kinda extraction shooter that cares more about mass appeal than lasting long because the fact of the matter is embark has no idea what they're doing with the genre. Which is a blessing and a curse, as it's also the reason the game has so many cool and unique elements.

Which I suppose is more to the point, as weak as it is as an extraction mainstay, and as much as I fear for the genre if its failures are emulated because it's "good enough," the game still is unique and very, very good at its core. I never mean to shit on this game because it really is special, I just wish it would let itself be special, instead of watering itself down for fear of scaring off people.
