Tarkov sucks in a good way, it's got so many player unfriendly mechanics that actually enhance the experience if you let it beat the shit out of you. The hacker problem is universal in these games, but it's particularly bad in Tarkov sometimes, and I can't say for sure that it's worth a try over any other game, but it popularized the genre for a reason, it's really special. 7/10, I own unheard and I barely play it.

ARC is very bare minimum on the parts that make extraction shooters...extraction shooters, but like every other aspect of the game is super good so it kinda balances out to a fun game, albeit not a long-term extraction shooter for fans of the genre. The PvE is so tightly and deliciously designed I could die for it. The smart movement, the way you feel like you're actually being hunted, it's the best player vs robot game since gen zero. 9/10, damn good game I just hope other extraction shooters don't take its failures and propogate them.

Dark and Darker is a blast, and even though SDF works to sabotage it every single day, the core game is so fun that it really doesn't matter. I love almost everything about it, except for whatever really stupid thing they did most recently at any given time. It's gonna die for SDF's dumbass bullshit, but until it does it's always still worth dropping in now and again because, again, the core is just so good it's impossible to ruin. Also, its class-based gameplay and buildcrafting mechanics are most similar to Marathon out of anything on the market, which is neat. 6/10, try harder ironmace before you lose it.

ABI Is actually really fun, but lacking in substance or impact, so I fell off pretty quickly. Just very solid arcadey remix of the Tarkov formula, though. If you want a taste of tarkov but don't care for the involvement of actual tarkov, I think it's a solid time waster. 5/10, perfectly average, perfectly fun.

Hunt: Showdown was my first, so I'll always have a soft spot for it, but more objectively while the PvE sucks and it's not very impactful on the item loss/gain front, since you can always afford what you want and it never really seems to matter if you're doing good or bad, the actual gunplay is so good it does not matter. The pvp, the audio, the way you have to think about fights and interact with the environment to win, it's so good. 8/10, almost perfect game, just also has the flaw of not doing extraction too good, like ARC.

Ghosts of Tabor is like tarkov but a little worse. They can't maintain it, the DLC sucks bad, and it just struggles to keep up with the baseline it meant to reach years ago. 4/10. It did VR extraction first, so I'll give it that, but it's just not that good compared to

Contractors: Showdown - Exfil Zone has satisfying shooting, delicious survival mechanics, really good and fun arcadey looting, and is of course enhanced 100% by VR play. It's the best bits of tarkov ported straight into VR. 7/10, just a right blast, give it a go if you have 20 bucks and a headset.

Anything popular unmentioned I either haven't played at all or haven't played enough to feel comfortable speaking on.

Last of us, FEAR, ARC Raiders, the early Halo games, they're all so massively enhanced by the feeling that the enemies are thinking and planning and acting like a person, not an obstacle

ARC reminds me of when devs actually tried to make enemies that enhanced the experience, rather than checked off a box

Yeah, so it's really more that every little change that has been bad along the way was an attempt at greater mass appeal. Water down the art style so it doesn't off-put as many people, simplify the ability system into heroes, basically doing everything they could to make it more appealing...to anyone who didn't like extraction shooters. They didn't realize that they were working with an inherently niche game type (unless you compromise the basic loop, like ARC) and tried to water down the only bits that let it work for what it was.
